    I ran an aircraft hydraulic shop for 17 years. This is how this work should be done. Cleanliness is most important. One suggestion I have is you should get some brass rod and make several types of seal picks. Eighth inch welding rod works good.This will save scratching polished parts.

    • @dans_Learning_Curve
      @dans_Learning_Curve 9 місяців тому +3

      I believe he did alright with being clean. Yes, brass drifts would have been helpful. I don't believe anything was damaged.

    • @4GSR
      @4GSR 9 місяців тому +4

      You don't want to use brass drifts around open bearings. Use good old mild steel bar for drifts to drive bearings with. Brass drifts are good for driving other parts. Great video! Love watching this kind of stuff.

      @@4GSR I take what you didn't say was the brass might flake and drop into the bearing?

    Well, I definitely think if Matt was given the special tools and parts to remove, rebuild and reinstall the main rotor transmission on a Sikorski HH52a Seaguard amphibious helo I flew in as a Coast Guard Aviation Machinist Mate Flight Mechanic/ Hoist Operator and it would be fully reliable to get us out to and back from rescue missions.
    He's that good in my estimation.
    I have removed one and reinstalled a fresh rebuilt one from it's storage/transportation can and it's not a walk in the park to do it.
    Can't wait to see him reinstalling it on the excavator then testing it.
    Absolutely no doubt that it's gonna work perfectly.

    Nice work Matt. Now you're at the nail-biting phase where you have to worry for the next few weeks "did I put that seal in right, did I seat the bearing correctly, did I forget a shim, are the clutch packs correct?" etc. That's the worst part. But to me you looked as thorough as you could possibly be.

    I really look forward to your videos. Your approach to work is addictive to me as a viewer with its combination of humility (the way you leave little mistakes in the edits) and direct action. Your sense of humor is subtle and drier than the Atacama. I never thought you could do so much with Harbor Freight tools! Which goes to show that its not the tools but the mechanic wielding them that get the job done. I'm glad you only get a video out once every week or two because I lost nearly a week of productivity bingeing on the Cat D4 project. I'll probably watch the whole thing over again in a year or so. It makes me cringe to see the money you've been laying down for the party, though. More courage than I have, but saving grace is low RPM. Clean room is important especially for engine build consider A/C. Great job no parts left over and it rotates by hand correctly planetary gears seem a little loose but if it doesn't leak this will be a monumental accomplishment and a HUGE cost saving. Good luck from a fan. Ray Stormont
