    im more impressed by the fact that Hassan doesn't have a hint of accent when he speaks English and he gets his points across like a native speaker would. I know that he probably spoke English when he was growing up in Turkey but there's a level of language proficiency you're only likely to get at when you start speaking the language really young and around other native speakers.

      Hasan had Turkish parents and studied in Turkish schools before college, so it's not surprising. The actual achievement is to maintain it, Dr. Oz is also Turkish but he speaks like Tarik's Turkish nowadays because he doesn't use the language often.

      The reason why hasan doesn’t have an accent is because of his mom, his mom is Turkish American, she was born in turkey but came to the United States when she was very young if you hear hasan mom speak, she sounds American and has no accent. She ended up having hasan born here in america than moved back to turkey, it’s safe to assume that hasan mom spoke to him in English while he was growing up in turkey.
      Hasan uncle, Cenk Uygur (hasan mom’s brother) is the same story, born in turkey, came to America very young.

    Best way to explain this would be, Tariks turkish is a mix of a Aegean village accent and a foreign persons grammar, he doesn't properly conjugate the verbs and uses a short and round pronunciation. Hasan's turkish is how well educated native Istanbul people talk, it is properly articulated, no particular accent and no grammatical mistakes.

    As someone who spent over 2 years in the US as a child, and lives in Turkey, I'm always amazed at how well Hasan can speak both languages and switch instantly between them without any issues. I'm also native in both languages but because of how different the tongue movements are like Hasan mentions, its always a struggle especially when you immediatly switch. Hasan does it perfect. Its very impressive.

      I live in Australia but my first language is Turkish. I assume Hasan had the same arrangement and spoke the language at home and was exposed to English throughout his schooling life.
      Similar arrangement with a lot of children who speak English in addition to the language/s they speak at home.
      You don't even think. It's second nature and thoughts are formed in the language you are actively using at the time so you don't lose time to actively trying to translate into the other language hence maintaining good cadence.

    the deciding factor is really which language you needed most during your formative years as far as language acquisition is concerned. your own native language competence builds and solidifies in your teens. Doesn't even matter all that much what language was spoken in your home, the language you needed most in your day to day life from around age 10 to 20 usually will be the language you are most fluent in, while your first native tongue (the one you speak at home) may take a bit of a backseat unless you really make a conscious effort to maintain it (by frequent stays in that language's country, frequent exposure to music movies tv shows etc).
    Hassan had the advantage of getting fully proficient in his own native tongue in his main formative years, while obviously having a lot of motivation and incentive to maintain a native-like level in English too (with most popular media being English it's very easy to get English exposure and be motivated to seek that exposure, while not every Turkish-American teen may be eager to sit with their parents through Turkish soap operas at home to maintain their Turkish).

    "Konuşuyoz" is not a slang, it just isn't standard Turkish. Konuş(+u)-yor-uz is the standard, Istanbul Turkish. Konuş(+u)-yo-z is the form that is used by most dialects of Turkish (especially those that are spoken in Central Anatolia region). It's grammatically correct. Some other forms that are used by other dialects are: Konuş(+u:)-ru-z (Not to be mistaken with "konuşuruz", the "u" phoneme in this one is longer), konuş(+u)-p dur(+u)-z, konuş(+ıv)-rı-z. These are all grammatical and have the same aspect and person/number, just in different forms.

    Hasan is a bit off here. Shortening words is actually alot more inline with rougher Turkish, spoken by elders abd people from rural areas. Tarik just doesn't articulate is that well, and he misuses it a bit. Like "konusuyoz" is a poor articulation of "konusuyok" which is about as old school Turkish as it gets. But Hasan himself is from Istanbul so he used used to a more formal and light Turkish.

    • @berkedemirezen2540
      @berkedemirezen2540 Рік тому +3

      Konuşuyoz isn't a poor articulation of konuşuyok! Those are two different things. This is like saying Imma is a poor articulation of I'll. 😂
      -yoz is the shortened version of the compound suffix -yoruz, and -yok is the shortened version of the compound suffix -yoruk.
      A Marmaran or Thracian Turk will say konuşuyoruz, an Aegean or western Central Anatolian Turk will say konuşuyoz, an Antalyan or Mersinite Yörük Türk or a Cypriot Turk will say konuşuyoruk, a Turk from the eastern Black Sea region will say konuşayruk, a Cappadocian Turk will say konuşuyok or gonuşuyok.
      The original, most archaic (or "old school" as you called it) one among them is the -yoruz form, not the -yok form. Some dialects of Turkmen spoken in Turkmenistan and Afghanistan also use the -yoruz/yorus form (whereas -ýarys is used in Standard Turkmen based on the Teke tribe's dialect).
      The -yoruk & -yok forms in some dialects of Turkish and the -irik/ırıx (x=kh) form in Azerbaijani are probably a product of the Kypchak-Tatar influence during the time period when Azerbaijan and much of Turkey were under the Ilkhanate rule. The -ık/ik/uk/ük 1st-person plural suffix is a trait found in Kypchak Turkic languages.
