The concept of Ethereum is a natural place of minimum energy for any sufficiently advanced civilisation that's out there. If it doesn't happen now in our human society, it will happen in the future. If you read his favorite fable of all time (Fable of the Dragon-Tyrant by Nick Bostrom), you'll realize that he wants to live forever (for eternity) and to do that, he can start with what Bostrom recommends at the bottom of the story: eat less, eat more nutrients.

Revenue is created by the tokens that the creators of the dapp hold. If the decentralized application is successful the associated token will rise in value because there is more demand for it.

What is the benefit of ETH reaching 5000, or the impossible 5 billion that +Xi Xu stated? You getting rich by not doing anything? It seems like there is a lot of people motivated by not actually having to work to get money. Is there an intrinsic value to what you people wish for? What are the downsides? I know for a fact it won't follow Xi's wishes, because governments will ban and destroy it before that happens.

Vitalik, you should do some manual labor like digging, building, repairing outdoors. It will strengthen your body while opening up your mind to sudden surprising insights. When Newton set up his experiments, they were physical tasks leading to formulas and laws. Tech is not tactile enough, not human enough. You need balance to change the world.

Since that hack of the Ethereum and any responses by forking the development of the currency, it should be understandable that the iteration that is supported by the developers should be the intended and desired market for the general public. The out cropped versions of the currency was and still is too hack prone and a significant amount of the resources on those assets were ill gotten and highly vulnerable now and in the future.

Why would a decentralized system give you more ownership over your data? I mean even for decentralized peer to peer applications, your data may not flow through a centralized server, but it still travels through many nodes (which you don't really know much about). Why would the risk posed by these spread out nodes be less than that posed by a central server?
Also if you want services provided to you on the peer to peer network, i think most people providing those services would expect some payment. Right now, the advertising revenue more than covers the returns service providers expect. If you stopped that revenue, by making it harder for companies to track people and their information - how do the companies get paid, when the public expects the services to be free?

I really don't like the idea of Ethereum, because it's trying to do too much. From a technical standpoint any time that happens things become too complex. More importantly though from a non-technical standpoint this thing is too monolithic. It seems to me that it can take away your ability to choose. It may be open source but I think there's a great chance for vendor lock-in here. I think this is comparable to what systemd is on Linux systems.

Ethereum will be the dominant public blockchain platform. Bitcoin had the first mover advantage but lost it when they became too stubborn to move to larger blocks.
I think people give the block size debate far to much weight personally i don't think hitting the cap a few times has harmed anything... I do however agree that ethereum is a contender and if bit coin does not catch up it could loose a considerable amount of market share. This is a great thing in my opinion i love the idea of a decentralized democratic currency competing with a much younger more agile centralized model, i believe that ethereum and btc will make beautiful market music together.
Actually, Bitcoin is already moving to be scalable, you should get better info.
Also, Ethereum has a direct competitor that is being developed straight onto the Bitcoin blockchain: Rootstock.
As Bitcoin is by far the most spread out cryptocurrency, giving the option to people to use a similar system to Ethereum without having to "change" Bitcoin for Ethereum would make it more appealing.
Much is about friction and frictionless.

Completely agree. Not just larger blocks but Bitcoin is completely missing the point. Internet golds are not enough. Ethereum is more ambitious in this regard and is positioning itself as a platform with ether being the currency. They also have a strong backing and community.
So what. A huge part of the world doesn't give a damn about "platform" or "community", they just want money to use for their exchanges, and Bitcoin is already in large advantage for fame, distribution and value. And it keeps growing. Ethereum will surely be side by side with Bitcoin, but it won't "win" anything.
Also, inflation rate in Ethereum is fixed at 2% per year, Bitcoin has a fixed decreasing inflation that will be very near to 0 in 10 years, making its value higher every year.
