Man...there's even the thunderstorm in the background. It may have been an 8 bit song in 1987, but THIS is what it sounded like in my head as a little kid.
Now I understand what the developers intended when they created this game. Because of the limitations of the NES, the music fell short of the mark. This story, told in Eastern tradition could probably make an epic movie, with the right budget, actors, and fx.
In all fairness, they did not push the NES to its fullest with the game. The NES's soundchip is capable of so much more, as evidenced by Journey To Silius on the NES. Then again, it was an early title for the NES, hard to expect technical mastery of what was then a new platform

Mainly because I thought the protaganist was a girl rescuing a princess, mainly because of the ponytail and the mini skirt ( or at least that's what I thought it was). It sincerely made me believe girls can be awesome martial heroes too.

this is awesome what you have started! the main melody for section A was most likely written for a flute (ryuteki, etc) Also, I hear a lot of repeat plucking on the koto. That's more of a chinese thing, and is not very common in Japanese koto usage.

Actually, this was quite popular in Japan and East Asia in general. A couple reboots and sequels were made.
This was a huge arcade hit before it was an obscure NES game....
The 8-bit audio on this was actually quite amazing in what it conveyed in such a limited audio format.

The Only Ninja Game Worth Playing With Music
It's just one of the best arrangements for a video game song I have ever heard and only old school gamer can appreciate this as I do.

This game was (unintentionally) hilarious on the C64. Still, the music was amazing. EVERYONE remembers the C64 music from Legend of Kage.
