Just wanted to add my thanks to all the others. Your video is clear, succinct, and easy to understand. I think you have saved a whole bunch of us from a lot of wasted efforts and heartaches. Bravo!
This was amazing thank you! I was so stuck after setting the configurator to RAID 1, and had no idea why it wasn't showing on the desktop. Had no idea I needed to initialise the disk in Disk Utility. You've been a great help!
Thanks, this was very helpful! For those looking to do the same on Windows, you'll configure the same way through the G-tech software, then open Disk Management and format the selected drive to GPT (if you are not seeing the full amount of storage space that *should* be available as GPT allows for larger partitions). You can follow the rest of the video here and your raid should be working normally. This may be straight-forward to some, but I found myself having a bit of a difficult time initially - so I hope this'll help others who may have been having the same "issue".
Very cool video. I'm in Switzerland. I'm replacing my 11 years old MacPro for a 8 core 2020 MacPro. I just bought a 12 TB G RAID. That means 2x6 TB in safe mode. Many thanks for your your information. I found the G RAID software on the net. Please continue to publish videos. They are very interesting ! :-)
I have this exact drive and now want to use a new 16TB drive alone in here. It is a WD Red Pro. I “used” to be computer savvy but a life-changing event brought me a step back, so to speak. Do you have a video for using one drive in this RAID? It can be hard for me at times to watch tutorials all the way through but yours was easy to follow along. Thanks.
@DVE Store a super helpful tutorial. Thanks. You need to warn viewers that the raided drives are not plug and play. So, if they do your test they will get a red light on one of the drives. Tech support says that the configuration software will have to rebuild that drive, and... it could take a very long time depending on the amount of data used for the test. I am doing that now and it has taken over an hour to rebuild just 5% of the data. I am hoping that when complete my drive will be working like it is supposed to.
Hi Anthony, thank you for your feedback! Yes, we should remind viewers the drive is not a plug and play or that drives can not be switched around in the same unit. Thank you!
Thank you so much! I found this video to be super helpful! I tested my raid drive(s) as you demonstrated and now I have more confidence that the raid system is working as it should! :):):)
I just filled up a 10 TB Raid 1 on my mac. I have taken out the old hard drives and replaced them with new ones. But when I try to connect the old hard drive to a HD reader it doesn't recognize it? Do I have to do something to the HD when replacing it?
I just landed one of these. I'm trying to get a JBOD setup set up. I'm still unclear about the 3 USB-C connectors on the back. Are all three TB3? And should my Mac see the G-RAID no matter which port I use? (I ask because I tried the 2 on the left… nothing. Then I tried the single port to the right of the HDMI and it mounted).
This is great. Useful and easy steps. Thank you! I wish I found your tutorial a bit earlier. I accidentally dropped this unit about 6 inches and the RAID controller hardware stopped working. I suspected that my drives were still intact (precious memories there!), so I was looking to revive the unit. I had to buy an identical unit from eBay at an extortionate price. Once I placed the sleds in the new drive bay, they mounted right up. It actually mounted with all my data intact. I have another problem. I have an older GSAFE, but I cannot find the RAID software for it anywhere on the internet. The Thunderbolt configurator doesn't see the drive. Can anyone on this thread assist me with a link? Can I just use Disk Utility? Otherwise, I guess I will junk the unit. Too bad, I love the GSAFE.
Great video, thanks a million! Still, have you got any idea about how to prevent the drive from "going to sleep" so often? It's been driving me crazy for months - if I do not constantly pull files from it, it goes into sleep mode after few seconds..... Thank you!!!!!
Your links in the text description are dead, and it is impossible to find the RAID Configurator app. Please make the current link available. Thank you.
very helpful! When I got to the step of removing the drives to test them out around 5:40, one of the drives is now Red and G-RAID Configurator says the Status is "Degraded" and I need to rebuild... ??? This has happened twice. What am I doing wrong?
Quick question. I know this vid is a 4 yrs old but wanted to know if you knew the answer to this question. Let's say I have the G-Raid setup to Raid 1 and one of the drives fails. Can I swap it out with a new drive and have the contents copy automatically? Or will I need to reformat/reconfigure both drives to Raid 1 again? Thanks in advance
I purchased this drive which ships with a TB2 cable (20 Gbps). I've also purchased a TB3 (40 Gbps) cable. When plugged directly into my MacBookPro 16-inch with either cable, both measure around 470 MB/s read/write speed. Should I expect anything faster? I’m confused because this drive is capable of USB 3.1 Gen 2 speeds of 10 Gbps (theoretical). What should I realistically expect? How can I get faster speeds?
Hey good video and tips but I have a problem...I have the 12TB thunderbolt3 RAID but when I installed the G RAID configurator it doesn't detect the hard drive it just says 'searching'. Is there something I can do to fix this? Thanks
Great and most concise explanation, bravo! I have just one question: my G-Tech drive (exactly like yours) seems to go to “sleep” to often and just too soon. Is there any way to set/customize the spell of time after which the drive goes to sleep? It’s really frustrating, as I’ve got to wait too long for it to come back up and let me manage the stored files. Many sincere thanks!
thanks for your video it helps me a a lot. I have a question regarding format type. if I'm using both Mac and windows and I wanna get full access for G-Raid, which format should I choose? thanks
Is it possible to connect an old Graid hard drive with only a thunderbolt 2.0 connection to a new Mac with USB-C (3.0). If so what cable or adapter should I get? Thx
I have 2 units and one Thunderbolt cable. Can I transfer data between the TWO fast without using my PC? oR do I need another thunderbolt 3 cable and daiisy chaining the two oif them by using my pc to do so? wIll it affect the raid setups?
Hi your content are awesome. I know that G-raid thunderbolt 3 can me connected to other G-raid thunderbolt 3 if in the years you may need extra space. what I am asking and I didn't find on the web is: If you buy 1 drive G-raid thunderbolt 3 now and you put it raid 1 to be safe, can you in the future buy another G-raid thunderbolt 3, daisy chain then and then manage the space as a raid 5 or raid 6 so you have more space and you still are safe? Please may you give me and advice on this topic? If the daisy chain may manage raid 5 or 6 from 4 HDD (2HDD from one device and 2HDD from another device) that should be really awesome for projects in the future, not only in the present.
Very helpful! Wish I'd seen this earlier. I have a G-Raid on my iMac that I want to move to a PC. I tried the first thing - switched the USB-C cable, to no success. Have you got a tip for me?
Like a few other G-RAID owners, I found out that you should never remove the discs - hot swapping them - doing so will give you a red warning light indicating that the drives are not in sync with each other. I did the test as described in this video and had to rebuild the drives. It took almost a day to rebuild. I made the same mistake and tried it again just to see if any data was lost - discs are brand new so nothing dramatic. Red flashing light again and again into the rebuilding mode. Once this is done I will NEVER EVER remove the discs again. So be warned.
Rebuild the discs using the progamme and start again. Never remove the discs again unless one doesn't work, then replace it. Mine works fine after I realised that I shouldn't hot-swap the discs. I'm using RAID 1 on a 2019 MacPro as Time Machine.
Hey Brian! Ive experienced exactly the same. i just called WD and they had no clue about that issue and told me to return the still very new Raid. For summery: I could not do the swap, even with the Drive ejected via finder. So, whats the reason? Why did it work on the video here, and do we have a technical issue with our models? What if one of the hard drives do really break (They are not so kind to get software ejected first overall). Will it properly rebuild? I did that rebuild at first and it was 16hours at my 24TB version.. I mean, yea, i can rebuild it now (or do short way do raid0, then do raid1 - that took me 2 minutes here) and my set up is ready again. but what if one drive will fail in real life...
Hi @@HenrikEllerhorst Last week I spoke to a reseller of the G-Raid and he was in agreement with me that the drives are definitely not hot swappable. I wil never attempt that again as I have the G-Raid in my network. If one fails, which may be never but maybe tomorrow I'll cross that bridge then. For all these reasons, I have on and off-site BU's. Off site which back-ups my system and data drives and is an exact clone, so I can be up and running if something dramatic occurs. Off-site I also have a cloud based BU via Jotta-Cloud and I can easily get into it and retrieve files immediately (and that's very handy as I don't keep all my RAW files after the job is done) I'm not a hobby photographer so I don't keep everything, just the JPG's. On site I have the G-Raid and a few random 8TB HDD's that are cloned on an ORICO base station. This is ultima forma for me. My experience is that some manufacturers have no idea how there products perform in the field and have no interest in finding out. regards, Brian
My G raid with thunder bolt won't let me write files anymore. It's a 8 TB which as worked fine for 2 years but now I get an error when I login into a Premiere project it say's it as write protection on the G raid, even though the permissions are set to read & write on the drive. Just wondering if you had any suggestions?
Have to drop a quick note here, since I ran into problems (similar to Paulie) when trying to "check" the drives by ejecting them from the G-RAID Shuttle 4. Drive bays went red and the device would not detect the drives upon reinsertion, labeling them as "Dead." I had to call in to support, and they had me go into Terminal and write commands to get the drives reconnected. So, um, if anyone's considering the quick "pop and check" method described here, at least with the Shuttle 4, I don't recommend it.
I am trying to connect an additional display on my G-raid via HDMI but it’s not working. Any advice on how it might work or what I might be doing wrong?
Hi Joel, I have an 8TB G-Raid USB (brand new) and I followed your instructions. It seemed to be processing fine (took a minute to initialize/erase/format the drive). Then I opted to "check" the two drives per your instructions. Here's where I could use your help! I ejected the drive then physically ejected just the top drive; my red warning light went on right away (unlike yours) but I was able to remount the bottom drive and view the saved files. Then I ejected/unmounted the drive, took out the bottom drive and put the top drive back in (like you did) and the drive would not mount and was unreadable. (Disk Utility seemed to want me to reformat the drive ????) I then ejected the top drive (via the icon), and powered down the unit. I put both drives in. NOW with both drives in I get a rapidly blinking white light. The drive(S) mounts and I am able to access the files I copied on to it, BUT the white light is still rapidly flashing and the drive is spinning, (constantly) - I can hear it. I waited 5 minutes and ejected the drive again (the icon goes away) but the light is still flashing and I can hear the disk spinning. After another five minutes I decided to just shut down the unit. This was purchased a few years back but never opened and used for the first time today. Could this possibly be a defective drive? Any ideas? thoughts? your help would be appreciated! THX
@@dvestore Hi Joel I spoke in great detail to a tech guy at Gtech about your video. here's the issue that I ran into and he explains that you to would have the same issue once you reinsert BOTH drives. I did what you did but the RAID UNIT saw both drives as separate and ALTHOUGH the Gtech utility was reading it as a RAID 1 Setting it was showing up as two separate drives (4TB) - basically it converted them to JBOD mode. This was very confusing; hence the drives SHOULD be reconfigured again to secure their set up or used now as two separate drives! If you can confirm this I would appreciate it, as these are very costly units and I don't want to be using something that isn't working correctly! "Thank you for contacting G-Technology Technical Support. I did look at the video, and what the guy is doing is fine. We would recommend turning the unit off first before physical ejecting the drive, but otherwise he is showing exactly how the drive will work and how it should work. However, in the video he never inserts both drives back into the unit. He ends the video after showing the data is still on drive 2. Once he inserts both drives into the unit, he will come across the same situation you are, where the drives are now separated and un-sync'd. He would then need to rebuild the RAID to re-sync the drives. "
@@pauliev.7691 that is very strange that the drive automatically defaulted to JBOD. You definitely want to take advantage of having RAID capabilities. I am glad G-Tech could answer your questions. Aloha, Thank You Kindly for the step by step very very helpful. GREAT JOB!. Just configured my 12TB G-Raid thanks to you, had to utilize one of the two thunder ports on my iMac 2020, I need to free up both Type-C ports in order to plug in two 5k monitors, would I have to purchase a Type-A to Type-C Adapter to plug in to the Type-A Ports in order to utilize the Thunder Cord supplied in box? Ordered two adapters from Satechi, will that be ok to use? Or can I use the Type-A to Type-C cable supplied in the Box? If indeed I do use the Satechi Type-A to Type-C adapter will the speed still be fast enough? Hope to hear from you soon. Aloha Nui Loa felix
Can you replace the mirrored disks in future with larger capacity ones similar to Synology NAS boxes? I’m guessing No if they offer a daisy chain option. Connecting more than one unit up means separate drives rather than being seen as one single logical drive?
To secure your data isn't the "individual disks" safer than the "mirror?" Or not? If you make a backup of Disk 1 n Disk 2, and you barely use Disk 2? Also, in Raid 1, how can you know when one of the 2 discs has failed if the other substitutes it?
I have a G-Raid tower with six drives that is 3 or 4 years old. It runs 24/7. I would like to be proactive against drive failure and start replacing drives one drive at a time. I'm hoping it's practical to power down the RAID, pull one drive and replace it with a new one. Then hopefully, the drive will just rebuild on its own when powered back up. Once rebuilt, move on to another drive replacement. Or, am I dreaming? I'm Raid 5. Would that work? If so, what is the requirement for replacement drives? I hoping I can buy larger capacity drives so that its total storage will be greater than what it was when I started the replacements.
Thanks for your Question. We reached out to the manufacturer for you to get more expertise on this one. It sounds like you have a Shuttle XL, maybe a Shuttle. According to the manufacturer, you should not replace 1 drive at a time with higher capacity, as the computer will only use the capacity that matches the other drives. They would have to replace all the drives at the same time. They recommended you purchase another unit and copy the data over to that one. Then you will have data redundancy on different Hard drives. If you need further assistance or if we can recommend you any G-Tech hard drives, please feel free to shoot me an email at joelw@dvestore.com 👍😎
I have tried setting up my g raid to no avail. I've tried to download the mac software on three differwent browers and i keep getting a security warning that wont let go any further. Any idea on how to resolve this?

Damn I tried taking the drives out like you did but when I tried to put both back in they cane up as individual drives even though it’s in a raid 1 any ideas why?
When I click on the downloads button and select the Mac Driver, it flags up a security risk. The link isn't to be trusted according to both Firefox and Safari :(
A bit confused -- I followed this on Windows 10 and the conversion to RAID 1 was successful and the G-tech software says the drive is connected, but it doesn't appear under Windows/Windows Explorer itself anymore (even with Paragon software installed). It worked before....
Just bought a G-Tech RAID enclosure, Firewire/USB, but new. Just discovered that G-Tech apparently refuses to support it AT ALL. As in they've removed ALL the downloads to do this. They don't even have a legacy download section. This is bad. Really bad. Shame on you, G-Tech/Western Digital. You just lost a customer for good.
I use Windows. Do you have an "Idiots" guide for me? I am 74 and this technology doesn't come easy. So if you could help, I would greatly appreciate that! Thanks! RD
Hi! Thanks for your question! Choosing another RAID setting will mean reformatting your entire hard drive. You must make sure your data is backed up into another drive/location before you do this. Otherwise, you will purge all your data and lose it forever.
Have to be honest that procedure is just crazy insane to verify your raid is working. You could loose data in the process? The company G Technology has not provided its users a way to verify disk condition and or visualize usage.

THX
Hi paulie, that is very strange. What RAID setting did you format your drive to?
Paulie V. Thank you so much for this I can confirm this is happening to mine and I had to wipe it to re raid it
@@pauliev.7691 that is very strange that the drive automatically defaulted to JBOD. You definitely want to take advantage of having RAID capabilities. I am glad G-Tech could answer your questions. I have the drive but unable to daisy-chain or add an extra screen via HDMI. How do I do this?
Aloha Nui Loa

Does this have an app so you can access files from a mobile device?
Thanks
Good one. Thank you.
How much would a new drive cost once those are maxed out ?
how can I get the software to create raid 1 on Mac. have G-Raid Thunderbolt 3 - link please.
Where I can download G-tech Drive Utility? There is no links for G-Raid USB, Windows.
Hey mate just got one but all the software on the website has been taken down. Does this now make it unusable?
What happens when you daisy chain? Do you then have 2 RAID 1'S? Or does it end up being one drive configurable to raid 5 etc? thank you
In windows is posible work in Exfat?
Can you replace the mirrored disks in future with larger capacity ones similar to Synology NAS boxes? I’m guessing No if they offer a daisy chain option. Connecting more than one unit up means separate drives rather than being seen as one single logical drive?
Hi, does this also work on PC ?
Super clear and helpful. Thank you!
Thank you for your comment and feedback!
To secure your data isn't the "individual disks" safer than the "mirror?" Or not? If you make a backup of Disk 1 n Disk 2, and you barely use Disk 2? Also, in Raid 1, how can you know when one of the 2 discs has failed if the other substitutes it?
Great tutorial, thank you!
Do you find these drives really loud and annoying on a desk top?
very helpful indeed / thanks for explaining raid
If you need further assistance or if we can recommend you any G-Tech hard drives, please feel free to shoot me an email at joelw@dvestore.com 👍😎

what's the HDMI port used for?
I have tried setting up my g raid to no avail. I've tried to download the mac software on three differwent browers and i keep getting a security warning that wont let go any further. Any idea on how to resolve this?
I have a g-safe gen 3 2tb double drivers. When I turn it on it displays double source, It will not work until I remove the second drive, can you help, why does it do this?
Thanks, that was really helpful
Damn I tried taking the drives out like you did but when I tried to put both back in they cane up as individual drives even though it’s in a raid 1 any ideas why?
Hi! It seems you have the same issue as the person below Paulie V. Let us know if you need any more assistance!
When I click on the downloads button and select the Mac Driver, it flags up a security risk. The link isn't to be trusted according to both Firefox and Safari :(
Crome?
thanks what a great tute
What write speeds are you getting in RAID 1?
Thanks!

How is this Drive for Windows 10?
The problem is when the enclosure dies… this happen to me, and they don’t make my enclosure anymore..
Hi, if I choose raid 1 in the beginning can choose raid 0 after months without losing my data?
Hi! Thanks for your question! Choosing another RAID setting will mean reformatting your entire hard drive. You must make sure your data is backed up into another drive/location before you do this. Otherwise, you will purge all your data and lose it forever.
@@dvestore Thank you.
@@mrJohnapos You Welcome!

@@mrJohnapos As long as you backup your files and make sure they are safe. Always, make sure you backup your files before you reformat the drive :)
software no longer available as of 5/17/2023, the site no longer offers a download as they have discontinued support for the software.
Have to be honest that procedure is just crazy insane to verify your raid is working. You could loose data in the process? The company G Technology has not provided its users a way to verify disk condition and or visualize usage.
what on earth is the HDMI for lol
DO NOT REMOVE HARD DRIVE FROM IT'S CASE. You will have to rebuild it again.
wished i never bought a g drive
Worked like a charm! Many thanks.
