  • How did the two central currents of international abstraction, abstract expressionism and informal painting, influence each other? What were the centers of postwar abstraction? What role did international abstraction have in the Cold War, what made it a world language?
You can learn more about these and further questions in the expert talks with international art historians and curators, including Daniel Zamani (Curator of the Exhibition, Museum Barberini), Ortrud Westheider (Director, Museum Barberini), Gražina Subelytė (Curator, Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice), Kay Heymer (Director for Modern Art, Museum Kunstpalast Düsseldorf), and art historian Jeremy Lewison.
"The Shape of Freedom. International Abstraction after 1945," June 4 - September 25, 2022 at the Museum Barberini in Potsdam

Fantastic conversation. In America, we do not necessarily frame the birth of the Ab-Ex movement of painting in the context of European abstraction and the post-war experience very well. Perhaps this exhibition helps us all understand the dialog and development of this trajectory.
