Plastic tie wrap is good for your triangle. Now practise hitting it in different parts of the triangle slowly, to really hear the difference between hitting it on the side and then hitting it inside the bottom, as well as right at the top, near the tie wrap. All of these sounds are different. Try it too at different dynamics PP, P , mf , f and ff (literally banging the hell out of it) in different parts of the triangle. This is the only time this line is applicable. In percussion we always learn by starting slowly then speeding up and then going faster than what is needed so that we can become accustomed to all tempos and speeds.
Tian Zheng Sometimes I don’t even know how I keep up with all the instruments we have to learn to play. I mean I just learned apparently we have an ocean drum in the percussion room and last year we had to play whirly tubes.
Honestly you just kinda learn in rehearsal. I have 2 xylophone pieces for my concert and I didn't even read sheet music before that and now I can play them flawlessly
We love some cymbal recognition! It isn’t just loudly slamming them together like a toy monkey, it has tons of dynamics and it’s difficult to get a good sound out of them considered their weight and the awkwardness of holding them.
FYI: resonance. Timpani tuned in octaves, quarters or fifths compared to one another tend to resonate due to over- and undertones existing. If you need silence, dampening them all is a must to have the conductor not murder you. Only tearing a timpani head mid-concert, thus screwing ALL of your tuning annotations AND stickings is considered a worse way to die, but at least there's some gallows humor to be found between the time the head breaks, and the conductor finds out. -- Timpanist for 20+y, massacred only 1 head (Theme from the Lost World - J. The fact that people don't realize we play so many instruments makes me sad. Recently some girls talked to me about about how easy we have with our exams cause we play only rythm and i was like *bitch excuse me* i had to play 5 different pieces on different instruments for this exam
Yep. While I find that individual percussion auditions/exams can be easier in general, since we don’t have to worry about things like squeaking, we still have MULTIPLE. There’ll be at LEAST two, for a keyboard and snare, but it’s probably gonna be more.
Okay for I had to play this difficult piece for our exam and like my friends told me yours is easy even tho the sticking is weird and how fast I to play it at like some people tell us (pit mostly has the marimbas and bass) that we aren’t need in marching but like we help keep tempo and we are the melody
True story: Classmate: "Isn't percussion SOOOO easy?" Me: "ummm... Not really?" Classmate: "But al you do is hit stuff and keep the rhythm" Band Director: "Some people have a hard time doing that *looks at classmate*"
@@kry-17 I'm not saying wind instruments are easier. I play the flute and oboe as well and it's pretty dang tricky sometimes with the air, especially flute. I'm not comparing them, I'm just saying that percussion isn't as easy as people think they are.
I said to my percussion friend *me a clarinet* “ya wanna make the most annoying sounds possible” and after like 3 minutes of me playing the highest note I can hit F5 and my percussion friend playing 16ths on a triangle we made a girl cry

Kkkkk I'm from one of countries where the marimba originates (in fact it's name is in my language) and I can tell you, there's a big difference between beginner playing and professional. I do actually play another trad instrument, but I can't play marimba to save my life. 😂😂
It seems stupid the first time you hear it, sounds kinda absurd: Small details is what really adds up. Not a perscusionist myself, but a flautist, but I think this can be said in every instrument
@【しいな】Shiina Used to be metal drummer (yes, a lot easier than being orchestral percussionist, I am aware) And yep, you are basically the boss of a party
People will pull out the tambourine or triangle as the butt of every joke "What instrument would you play, the triangle?" Hur hur haha. Some triangle/ tambourine features are hard asf.
After seeing this, I think people will finally understand how hard percussion is. First of all there is two and four mallet playing. With snare drum you have to know at least 30 different rudiments. Finally, you have to know the correct technique for each auxiliary instrument.
Triangle is deceptively difficult! And Tambourine. :) When Eddy started doing the CNY dance I nearly lost it - I had never made that connection before 😂😂
@@tjppercussion I haven't tried them all but I've tried a fair few in my travels and my personal preference so far is for Korogi or Yamaha - beautifully tuned wood and great, consistent sound.

That point where you know you did a piece injustice, butchered it, and give up and make up something that sounds like the real thing and call it a variation.
woah i didnt know they had to learn so many instruments. mad respect. i learned a lot with this video. + as someone that does ballet, hearing the triangle's part only in the nutcracker overture was an interesting experience!!
I love how the professional doesn't even try to control his laughter this time. But Eddy wasn't bad at that. Percussion could be his fallback instrument if violin doesn't work out.
I was waiting to see if they would play it like in Spanish folk music but the only two things I saw that were the same were shaking the tambourine gently, and hitting the middle with a finger while rattling it across the parchment to add a friction sound while the metals clang in 5:27. Oh and just plain hitting it at the end too 🤣
The evenness and dynamics achieved by a good percussionist are things I have taken for granted in the past, but now I have a new found respect for the skills involved. Also, amazed how hard it is to get a good sound from the cymbals. The attention to detail of muting the triangle also made a huge difference.

Totally agree
Honestly, percussionists just have a ball the whole time. There’s no reason to not have fun while playing an instrument
Eddy
20% playing
80% doing some sick dance moves
Didnt even put his shirt off smh

Other people: why's he covering his ears and moving weirdly?
Me, and Asian: omg he's doing the lion dance xddd

LafaYEET How are you doing, BROTHER?!
Mikael P. Yeah it was, the professional was ok too
aranel it’s out now boiii
Thank you for labeling who was the beginner and who was the professional. How could anyone tell who was who if not for those hints.
WhatAboutTheBee haha
Right!? I had to always look up at the label😂
WhatAboutTheBee WHATDOYOUMEANNN? I coudn't tell the difference! xD
They both sounded so good! Especially the one labeled "Beginner"
Serious?? It can’t be more obvious...
Look how many instruments you have to learn as a percussionist, guy's definitely got 40 hours a day to practice...
Tian Zheng
Sometimes I don’t even know how I keep up with all the instruments we have to learn to play. I mean I just learned apparently we have an ocean drum in the percussion room and last year we had to play whirly tubes.
Honestly you just kinda learn in rehearsal. I have 2 xylophone pieces for my concert and I didn't even read sheet music before that and now I can play them flawlessly
“40 hours a day”
Say that again, but slowly
Connor Foley You must be new to the channel.
@@afro4640 exactly
We love some cymbal recognition! It isn’t just loudly slamming them together like a toy monkey, it has tons of dynamics and it’s difficult to get a good sound out of them considered their weight and the awkwardness of holding them.
0:46 I laughed out loud when he, while maintaining a totally serious face, dampens the one he didn't even play yet.
And yet he won't dampen the triangle!
Keeling Charles There’s ACTUAL professional recorder players which I’ve performed with. Much better than 6 year olds.
We need recorder legend
two set violin and recorder legend collab when
I've seen a professional recorder player on UA-cam, forgot his channel name but he sounded really good.
That would be amazing. I love the recorder sound (played by a professional)
Tour idea: take volunteers from audience and have an entire ensemble of first time players...what a glorious mess...
Look up the "Portsmouth Symphonia" it's exactly that.
Did you mean: *6th Grade Band Ensemble*
Eccentric Nerd ahahahah
@@-runa-7064 that got me mad, they really said pit was unnecessary? The disrespect and stupidity in that statement.
Percussionists are not real musicians. Kazooists, on the other hand, are.
AHAHAHA loving Eddy’s movements. His facial expressions too ahahha
True story:
Classmate: "Isn't percussion SOOOO easy?"
Me: "ummm... Not really?"
Classmate: "But al you do is hit stuff and keep the rhythm"
Band Director: "Some people have a hard time doing that *looks at classmate*"
lmao
Your band director is shady
At least you don't need to suffocate yourself trying to keep a note when playing a wind instrument.
it's hard when you don't know the proper fingerings, I mean you might also run out of fingers when playing the piano
@@kry-17 I'm not saying wind instruments are easier. I play the flute and oboe as well and it's pretty dang tricky sometimes with the air, especially flute. I'm not comparing them, I'm just saying that percussion isn't as easy as people think they are.
I said to my percussion friend *me a clarinet* “ya wanna make the most annoying sounds possible” and after like 3 minutes of me playing the highest note I can hit F5 and my percussion friend playing 16ths on a triangle we made a girl cry

maybe the last vid of this series will be: "beginner violin vs professional" and all other musicians featured will try the violin!1!1! (Ling Ling will be there to destroy them all)
Ling Ling would be too busy practicing! 😂
Ling Ling taking out the violin before practice is enough to destroy them all!
Ling Ling so good that destroying them all *is* considered practice
Ling ling won’t be there
His time is much too valuable for twoset vids
Rob Landes would be perfect
You should do a season finale where all of the people you guys tried to play like come back and try to play the violin.
Bailey Phillips That’s a great idea! I hope they end up doing something like that.
Fast forward to the professional pianist, who was so talented she could play both piano AND violin...
So talented 😭
A study has shown that Ling Ling isn’t actually a person. It’s a spirit that rarely possesses classical musicians.
That's what I'm saying!
Omg, i swear Tcahikosvky's Symphony No 4 's ryhthm sounds exactly like the notes we hear every chinese new year
Love how at the end, the professional is just like "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DAMP THE DAMN TRIANGLE ALREADY"

3:11 that lion dance though

That last few second where the percussionist grabs the triangle and gives a look like: yeah... you should have done that as well.

Dumbmojo 2020
Those guys clearly have never played it.
Kkkkk I'm from one of countries where the marimba originates (in fact it's name is in my language) and I can tell you, there's a big difference between beginner playing and professional.

Dear god the triangle was... the most impressive for me.
Triangle is deceptively difficult! And Tambourine. :) When Eddy started doing the CNY dance I nearly lost it - I had never made that connection before 😂😂

The evenness and dynamics achieved by a good percussionist are things I have taken for granted in the past, but now I have a new found respect for the skills involved. Also, amazed how hard it is to get a good sound from the cymbals. The attention to detail of muting the triangle also made a huge difference.
