  • Meckel's Diverticulum and the Rule of 2 - Meckel's Diverticulum Explained
Meckel's diverticulum is a congenital anomaly involving a bulge in the lower small intestine, a remnant of the omphalomesenteric duct from fetal development. The "Rule of 2" helps remember its key features: it occurs in 2% of the population, is located 2 feet from the ileocecal valve, is 2 inches long, contains 2 types of ectopic tissue (gastric and pancreatic), and 2% of affected individuals experience symptoms. It is twice as common in males and often presents within the first 2 years of life. Symptoms include abdominal pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, and intestinal obstruction. Diagnosis is challenging and may involve a Meckel scan, CT, MRI, or ultrasound. Symptomatic cases typically require surgical removal of the diverticulum.
