I am just drooling as you pour the gravy on that beautiful dinner! Every time I watch one of your video's or see anything about Newfoundland and it's kind people I so want to move there! The only thing I would not like about it would be the wind. And that is only because I wear a wig and I would have to nail the darn thing to my head so I wouldn't lose it! Thanks Bonita for another great delicious recipe!
You are so sweet, the wind would blow the chicken out of a egg. So funny! Thank you so much for leaving a lovely message and you take care and stay safe, I'm glad you enjoyed our NEW recipe today. :) Bonita
Made a cooked dinner for friends this wknd and the dressing was a big hit! Will absolutely make again. I used a fresh loaf of bread from the bakery section and cubed it in 1" segments and left out to dry for the day and I added 1tsp dry ginger (always add to my stuffing too! reduces heart burn). The only changes I will make next time is entirely omit the sugar and I will use some more savoury. Another hit from Bonita's channel!
Nice! I'm so glad you made the bread pudding recipe, it is indeed a different taste I can see using less sugar as well but its all in your taste for sure. Thank you for letting me know and enjoying our channel. :) Bonita
Bonita, I' make a variation of this that I make with a beef roast. Got the recipe from my mother-in-law years ago. Soak bread in water for a minute, squeeze as much water out of it as you can. Then start adding dry bread back to it until it gets to a texture that feels right to me. I add melted butter, onion, savoury, s alt, pepper, and small pieces of cooked potato. When the roast is cooked, removed the roast from the pan, remove the drippings, add pudding to the pan and add enough of the beef drippings so the pudding can absorb the drippings and get a lightly crispy coating. Do not add a lid. It is absolutely delicious! I know it as an old fashion dressing. Enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing!
Oh my Anita that sounds delicious, I'm so glad you enjoyed our video and thank you for sharing your recipe with all of us. We can't have to many ways to use our stale bread in with another meal. :) Bonita
That is so wonderful Amanda, thank you for stopping by and sharing that with us. Grandma's are the best! Of course I'm one now, but I can remember my grandma making some tasty meals for us as kids. Have a wonderful summer and thank you for stopping by. :) Bonita
I lived just outside of St. John’s and my mom always made bread pudding but as a dessert. No onions or savoury but sugar eggs and raisins and milk. It is delicious and I make it myself. Your recipe reminds me of the stuffing mom made. I don’t add onion due to my own preference. Mom also made a “boiled” pudding that she made when she cooked a roast beef. It too tasted sweet and contained raisins or sometimes blueberries. Cooked in a bag in the vegetable pot. All varieties of the bread puddings are perfect.
Hi Barbara, thank you for stopping by and leaving lovely message, yes I know the types of puddings your mom would make and they are so lovely, there are so many different types of steamed bread puddings here in Newfoundland and Labrador. Our viewer that told me about this one said his family made this one often. But in a pudding cotton bag, he said they would make the gravy before they put the pudding in the boiler so it wouldn't taste sweet. But I love this type with my boiled dinner and you don't need a stuffing then. Thank you once agree and have a lovely day, we got lots of sun today and we are in the garden. :) Bonita
Yes I would think so, having the savoury pudding steamed and cut in slices is a lovely spin on stuffing for sure. I'm glad you enjoyed our NEW recipe today and please follow up after you make it. :) Bonita
I'm so glad to help, and thank you for letting us know. This is a lovely and easy way to have a steamed pudding that taste like stuffing. Enjoy and have a lovely day...:) Bonita

Watched this just after having a chicken dinner with all the fixings, this would of been a great on the side of my plate with gravy over it, another great one , thank you.
Thank you Ricky for stopping by and it would have been lovely with a roasted chicken dinner, the gravy gives it a lovely taste and it uses up our stale bread. Bonita
Nice! Thank you Jeanne for leaving a lovely message letting us know, I'm so glad you stopped by and thank you for sharing your style with us as well. :) Bonita
It does remind me of a delicious stuffing - but I like the finishing touch the mold gives it! I'm making a sweet dessert bread pudding this week, then I'm going to try this Newfoundland savory version next (I even have some summer savory in my cupboard)
Hi Bonita! Hello from Nanaimo, BC. I was raised in New Brunswick and most of what you're cooking is very familiar to me. Thanks for the nostalgia and the great recipes. This one reminds me of Stuffing with nothing to Stuff. LOL. I think apples or a similar fruit could be substituted for the sugar. My Dad made Bread Pudding but it was more of a bread custard dessert. PS: I spent 2 great years in Labrador.
Hi Miles: Welcome and thank you for stopping by and leaving a message, we loved visiting Nanaimo BC when our youngest son went to university there in 2012 to 2016. I'm so glad you enjoyed our video and viewers recipe. This is very close to stuffing only a little more sweeter, works will with roasted chicken with potatoes and gravy. Have a lovely day and stay safe. :) Bonita
Boniita here is a little tip for wstery eyes working with onions just inhale through and exhale through your mouth. I use your channel for a lot of your wondeful recipes cheers
Hi Linda, I'm so glad you enjoyed our NEW recipe this week, the pudding tins are available on amazon and they are a good price. I use mine for so many pudding sweet and savoury. :) Enjoy Bonita
Hi Bonita, Thanks again for your lovely video and recipe..Maybe you can cover up the outside a bit of the pudding to give it a more delicious look! Just a tip! I am sure it tastes great though!👍
Thank you for your tips and for leaving a message, this is a type of pudding you would have with gravy or a savoury sauce, that will cover up the outside and it will taste lovely. Have a lovely evening :) Bonita
Thanks for the great recipe - the sugar is an interesting twist to make a sweet/savory blend. I may try this one with adding an egg, sautéed onion & celery and broth or milk. I think I must check out Amazon for a pudding tin or two.
That sounds lovely and this pudding if you make in a cotton pudding bag, our viewer said to make the gravy first so the gravy don't be sweet tasting. But I do mine in the pudding tin and it don't matter. I use this pudding tin at less three times a week making different puddings. :) Have a lovely day and thank you for leaving a message. :) Bonita
This is quite different from how we make it in the US ours is made as a desert and baked this is more like our stuffing but this looks really I'm going to try it
Hi Susan, Thank you for your message and for stopping by, we make it as well for a sweet dessert with a caramel sauce over it, ua-cam.com/video/83mLM2BceU8/v-deo.html this is a link, but this one is to serve with a dinner roasted chicken or roast beef, covered with gravy and used like a stuffing only as a pudding. I hope this helps and i hope you get to make it. :) Enjoy Bonita
Sounds lovely Peter, we have many puddings available on our website www.bonitaskitchen.com and here on youtube. This one is lovely and its much like a stuffing but our viewer called in Newfoundland bread pudding. Very Tasty! Enjoy Bonita
So this is like stuffing? I think I would maybe saute the veggies first, and add broth instead of water. Hey you just mentioned that! LOL Looks delicious!
haha thats ok, it would be lovely for sure, but the onion gets steamed and cooks really well. But using broth is the best for the taste and serving it with a gravy and what ever protein would be lovely. :) Enjoy Bonita
I was thinking the same thing. I'm from the southern US, we make what we call bread sweet. I like seeing what is popular in other places. Thanks for sharing.
When it comes to bread you should use ever taste of it, I have recipes on our website for blueberry bread pudding made with stale bread and of course stuffing for your turkey or chicken, I have a recipe for cod bread pudding this is our link, www.bonitaskitchen.com Enjoy :) Bonita
My mother used to make something called boiled dinner. It is the antithesis of modern cuisine but I think about it all the time. Have you heard about it? Do you know how to make it?
Husband requested pineapple ham and savory bread pudding for Sunday supper so of course I had to try out your recipe lol he’d kill me if I used any other ham recipe besides his nans but he said this looks just like his nans bread pudding so sure he’s gonna love it haha
See! I'm so glad you remember this one because its not something a lot of our culture is familiar with, thank you for leaving a message and have a lovely night. :) Bonita
@@bonitaskitchen I'm surprised that a lot of people don't know this recipe. This was a staple in our meals at least once a week. Mom use to boil ours with the veggies.
@@EllaNchanted Yes thats what our viewer said they did, but because a lot of our viewers don't have access to a cotton pudding bag, I thought it would be good to focus on the pudding tin and of course we can still use the pudding bag. Enjoy our NEW recipe today for Newfoundland Bread Pudding. :) Bonita
Hi Effe, the sugar don't stand out only add a little touch of sweetness and balances to the flavours in the pudding, if you steam it in a cotton pudding bag and you are planning on making gravy you may need to take some broth out of your boiler first before steaming the pudding. It may give the gravy a little taste of sweet, but I enjoy the taste. Thank you for your message and follow up if you make it. :) Bonita
Hi Dave, You tie the bag tight and have it lifted alittle in the pot, so the pudding don't have to much water in the bread. Plus if you are making a gravy take some broth out before you put the pudding in the pot so in don't taste a little sweet, or use a different boiler. Enjoy and Happy Thanksgiving :) Bonita
Interesting. Here in the Midwest, "bread pudding" is more a dessert item. Which explains why my face showed horror when you added the onion. But, after thinking of it for a while, especially with some gravy, it looked very tasty.
Hi Richard, Thank you for your message and for stopping by. Here in NL our puddings are mostly sweet or a dessert!! But this one I was told it got a little sweet and savoury to be eaten with your meal served with gravy. The stale bread and savoury is pretty much the way we make our stuffing here, but adding the flour, butter, sugar and baking powder makes it more like a pudding. It is very tasty and I hope you get to try it sometime. This is our blueberry bread pudding for a dessert ua-cam.com/video/83mLM2BceU8/v-deo.htmlsi=KgMg5R1Y1ph9Z7Jm also our steamed blueberry duff (pudding) is a dessert ua-cam.com/video/9vJ7aHgU04c/v-deo.htmlsi=scP4BlSTfvMZhE6Z we post a new video every Sunday if you wish to stop back. :) Enjoy Bonita

Hi Laura, Thank you for your message and for your question on what is peas pudding, it is a split yellow peas recipe we here in Newfoundland and Labrador cook in a cotton pudding bag, we serve with a boiled dinner or Jiggs dinner that got cabbage, potatoes, turnip, carrot, salted beef, ua-cam.com/video/VGUwVR5gZeI/v-deo.html and peas pudding. Check out our video link here ua-cam.com/video/v-sPRO8FA0c/v-deo.html for that and it will give you a small idea what it is and how you would make it.

Thank you so much once again and have a lovely evening. :) Enjoy Bonita

Yes its pretty much that here in Canada, but sometimes we get a new/old recipe from years ago that our elders made and I love to share it because of it style and taste. This recipe is a mix of both, a little sweet and savoury. :) Enjoy Bonita

My housemate makes a lovely DESERT bread pudding, using a custard mix with the stale bread. Raisins too. Then it's BAKED. When it comes out, you can put some honey or maple syrup on it. YUM.
Sounds lovely Sandra, we have many puddings available here or our website www.bonitaskitchen.com but using your stale bread for steamed bread pudding or stuffing is the best. Have a lovely evening and thank you....:) Bonita
