- It's not often that the appearance of a freight working on a preserved railway causes a significant stir. However, the Watercress Line has become revered among preservation circles for their superbly restored freight rakes courtesy of their 'Wagon Group', who work meticulously on each of the railways' wagons. Therefore when the chance arises to witness one of their demonstration freight sets cutting through the beautiful views of the Hampshire hills, its an offer almost impossible to resist.
Over the weekend of the 27th-28th July, the Mid-Hants Railway shoe-horned two return workings of a demonstration freight set into their 'Standard Two Train' timetable, with recently overhauled Urie S15 Class - 506 at the helm. This offered visitors the chance to see the locomotive hauling freight, as it was designed for, for the first time since re-emerging from the Ropley workshops. While the main service trains were left in the capable hands of 4MT - 76017 and Ivatt 2MT Tank - 41312.
Locomotives:
BR Standard Class 4MT - 76017
BR(M) Class 2MT Tank - 41312
Ex-LSWR S15 Class - 506

I started as a volunteer on this railway 40 years ago when it only ran from Alresford to Ropley and the connection to Alton was a far off dream. I am delighted the railway has thrived into what it is today. I now live in S.E. Asia and have done so for many years.
Thank you so much for posting this superb video which brings back so many memories for me.
very good and nice weather 2
Simply beautiful! Well done to all those staff and volunteers for making this possible in the 21st century and kudos to the photographer. But, at times it looked like models taken straight out of their boxes and put on an exquisitely produced model railway....my memory of S15-hauled freights back in the early 60's is of grime-encrusted trains with rust, brake dust and soot everywhere. I guess replicating that these days would contravene some H&S directive!
8;53 and the REAR VIEWS is SUPERB! What a composition!!!
A Super video and thank you for uploading.
We are tending to stay with the smaller 5 inch gauge this year and try and get something in STEAM in our Workshop.
Watched for 7 years the S15 get back on her feet! Love David and Lily.
Love this ex LSWR S 15 class Urie / Maunsel. Have several OO Hornby's on my AnneliesVille Model Railway, but the real engine looks just superb ! One of the nicest designs for a steam locomotive. Thanks for sharing.
A ‘Goods Arthur’ delivering the goods. Excellent!🚂
The S15 looked an absolute treat. Thank you for sharing.
Fantastic job, 'Wagon Group.' Wish steam freight could be more widely seen.
Great video, lots of variety from the motive power dept! Thanks for posting your efforts!!
Excellent nice day to.
Hola, es un real deleite ver un vídeo con tan buena resolución , los detalles hacen la diferencia ,el paisaje muy lindo, 11:12 éste tren es como un juguete a tamaño real muy lindo, gracias.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video, and your kind words are greatly appreciated.
Again really wonderful shots.

Very good video :)
A proper Southern scene - Arthur in sunshine livery with a country goods - plus the fake cow in the cattle wagon, nice touch!! Shame about the Ivatt/Std 2 combo - weird looking things!!!!! Some cracking vid that, thanks as usual.
You do know that standard 2's worked on the southern, right!
really nice camera work really enjoyed this vid,, thankyou
Thanks very much
5:14 that's better!
Tho I've never seen something go through Ropley nonstop
How far off you you think 499 is steaming.
Good question...
5:03 I see a silhouette of a famous tank engine
Yes... unfortunately unavoidable.
I'm not giving you crap Mr southerner I just find it funny
I know, I was largely talking 'tongue in cheek'.
So you don’t like that certain blue tank engine then
@@frankieboitv619 - It may not be in the correct livery for any regional railway, but it is a prime revenue source, and travels around the country to earn money on other preserved railways. According to my tour-guide on sunday, it was in for remedial boiler work. (I visit on days when it is not earning it's keep) Excellent video though, wish my efforts were that good.
