We really enjoy this video! We actually felt like we were walking along side with you guys. I’m just blown away of how you are able to identify them so quickly
@@robertbrowning8725 they have books about all the mushrooms that are edible and toxic, i remember my dad taking my siblings and I mushrooms picking! Very fun.
@@GK09Winter thank you for the welcome and I’m glad to be back making Matsutake mushroom videos again 😃🙏. I had to delete my old ones because they got copyrighted for music that I had put in there lol
We've had good luck with matsutake this year(our first year hunting for mushrooms lol) The ones we normally find are #3/#4s and exactly 1 #1. The part you were talking about is called the veil, it's a feature that's shared with amanita species which are toxic and other mushrooms like agaricus which can also be toxic, which is why it's considered a "hard" mushroom to forage for. Especially since they're usually near each other. I've noticed that they tend to be near HUGE conifers at the base or within 10-20 ft of it but I know they can also be with deciduous trees like beech.
@@washingtonlife of course! Haha I grew up eating them, japanese and all. It's been interesting to see where they end up growing after not knowing for so long

This video was last weekend and they are starting to come out. The season is still really early but I’m hoping the snow doesn’t come in yet or else the season would be over before we get to enjoy foraging for them
Thank you for visiting my channel and you have to have friends that know where to go or you can definitely look around coastal forests but make sure to be up high on elevation around 1500 and up. Be careful out there and cheers
These Matsutake mushrooms has a very unique smell to them and once you smell your first one you will know exactly what I’m talking about. That’s how I know for sure I’m foraging the correct mushroom 👍. Thank you for watching
@@washingtonlife yes May be this week-end but I have never seen these mushrooms in France, we are a lot chanterelle mushrooms, trumpets of the death, boletus
Just trim off the brown and soak in salt water ... The wormy fall to the bottom. #2-5s are great to dehydrate. If you dry sautee the water out first then sautee with butter etc, they are great. Water doesn't hurt them when you dry sautee first before adding oil or butter
Deadly AMINITIA SMITHIANA look and smell like pine mushrooms 5:15 you left out an important ID aspect which is a lighter colored soil at the bottom of the stipe
Oh that’s good to know! Yea they smell and look just like pine but a lot thinner and flatter cap with more of a brownish tint to them. Thank you for the advice
