I find it so stupid when people get salty with Anthony's reviews. Like, okay, we get it, you think DAMN is a masterpiece and Lil Pump is garbage, good for you, but have you considered that people might think different than you? The Needle Drop is not your safe space, Anthony is not here to validate your opinions.
Why is it a problem that somebody disagrees with someones opinion? Im not jumping on Anthony, im just wondering why "My Bitch Love Do Cocaine" is on the same level as relatable, understandable and more emotionally hitting lyrics. Also, i think the whole album of Kendrick sounds better then the self-entitled Lil Pump album.
SyMa X I'm not talking people disagreeing with Anthony, I'm talking about people getting mad and posting angry comments and shit. It's totally OK to voice your disagreement with Anthony's reviews, but there's a difference between saying "I think you're wrong on this one, Lil Pump is not on the same level as DAMN" and going "you gave this one the same score as DAMN? Fuck you, Anthony! You don't know nothing about hip hop!"
SyMa X he made it pretty clear pump's lyrics aren't on the same level as kendrick's, or most other rappers. How many times did he call his lyrics dumb? He likes them both for entirely different reasons. I like cheescake because it's sweet. Steak isn't sweet at all. That doesn't mean I don't like steak just as much.
People change their minds about music all the time. I thought Damn was a masterpiece when I first heard it but now I feel like it's "good". Not a masterpiece but it's a decent album to listen to, definitely not Kendricks best.
I get the objective view of enjoy-ability. From what you're saying enjoy-ability is objective, which it is. But the truth is in the dynamic sphere of music, it is also relative. There are aspects that are considered in regard to a more lyrical and conceptually dense artist as opposed to catchy and hype-fulfilling artist. When Kendrick received his 7, what was considered were the various aspects of his creative foundation and what was created from that. When Pump got his 7 there was less to consider there than how much it was enjoyed. In order to enjoy their music there are certain things you look at that appeal to you as a listener and these things come with the territory of the genre or sub-genre of the music. I am literally saying, to enjoy a more technical artist there is much more from his/her music to consider. The lyrics and how the verses marry together; the conceptualization and the expression of it in the music itself, and of course, the production of it all. There is less to consider with a "sub-par" artist. I don't even need to go into what they are. Funny enough, artists like Pump know this. They have good production and catchy heavily heavily heavily repeated words knowing there is less to digest and making his music more "enjoyable". It's like taking a test out of 5 marks, receiving 4/5 and getting an 80% as opposed to an artist taking a test out of 20 marks, receiving 16/20 and getting an 80% too. What that then means is that what Kendrick's 7 means would be different from what Pump's 7 means.
TLDR; he wasn’t grading them on the same curve. ....Two completely different styles, occupying two completely different spaces within the world/genre of hip hop. Lil pumps record was given a 7/10 for what it was trying to be - and it obviously wasn’t trying to be a more cerebral, Kendrick-type of record. Kendrick on the other hand was clearly being held to a higher standard, thus the seemingly equivalent score of 7/10 - which actually wasn’t equivalent at all. A Kendrick 10 and a pump 10 are _not_ the same thing lol
Ctiboš Koroš But 17 addresses real problems in such a cliche way. You can find a million artists who say the same exact thing as X. Plus the acoustics are shit and the whole thing is poorly mixed. At least lil pump is fun to listen to and not just a really bad "edgy" album like 17 was.
Ctiboš Koroš Addressing those problems on it's own doesn't mean anything. I can read off the wikipedia definition of "depression" over a shitty beat, it'll be super informative but an incredibly shitty song. It's the way he approaches the issues that makes it so crappy. And musically it's crappy too. Lil Pump doesn't cover anything remotely deep lyrically, but the music itself is perfectly competent.
@@dalibor273 X tries to seem a lot more deep than he is. Pump doesn't put on any airs - he knows his music is dumb and he owns that and adapts his style around it.
I still don't get how you could enjoy this project equally as much as DAMN. I mean this shit so repetitive. I could listen to a song off his tape on the way to school, but on the way back I'd be bored of it. Theirs no way in hell I'm going back to listen to this tape in a month, but I know I'll go back to and listen to damn.
calgsus911 i love how you answered your own question in your question. "I dont get how YOU could like it" "If I listened to it i would get bored" simple answer, you are not him and he is not you
Okay music isnt subjective thats fake news spread by vegans. If somebody thinks Beethoven is worse than my child bashing a piano keyboard you cant say "oh its subjective"
Lil Boat actually deserved a 7 but Pump's tape is actually trash. I mean it's the same song over and over again. So formulaic. So repetitive. This is honestly the first time i am DUMBFOUNDED that you enjoyed something.
I don't understand how people are even comparing a stupid like Lil Pump with the legendary Kendrick Lamar. He's won 11 Grammys in a single year only surpassed by MJ. Do you think Lil Pump has got that content to win even 1? Does more UA-cam views mean better content? 2Pac, Biggie, KDot, Eminem, these are the guys who are something.
Wait, did he just compare Lil Pump to The Ramones? That's WORSE than giving him a 7 in the first place! Nah, I get it, it's subjective. Music is always subjective. I think the thing though is that Lil Pump is an out and out garbage lyricist, the Ramones for example, were clever and artful in their 'dumbness', Lil Pump is just a goon. A personality-less clown whose only discernible attribute seems to be hunger for fame and a kind of idiotic ego. He's a product of a company, rather than a product of artist imagination - again, as in The Ramones etc. The argument for the production used in his music having merit I could understand, as the prod in mainstream nu-trap defo has it's perks, but as an artist, I feel a lot of these clowns will be remembered EXACTLY as most of the hair-metal bands are - with embarrassment by those who gave them any kudos. And rightly so. To me, there's little difference in it's substance between, say, Warrant's Cherry Pie and something like Lil Pump. They're both just frat-dude garbage, offering nothing more to the larger music world.
Lil Pumps lyrics's are so meticulously crafted; only 25 seconds in and I can tell he has truly mastered the skill of lyricism. This boy is a genius. Some say Shakespeare's ability to write and tell a story are unparalleled, however I feel his skills are being put to the test by this young star. Lil Pump never fails to coax me in with his truly thought provoking lyrics. He is an artist, yet uses words. He is not bound by the materialistic constraints of paint, pen or pencil. He has limitless access to an almost infinite plethora of words and phrases, each of which are malleable to his own liking. One cannot simply concoct a track where only 98 different words are used throughout its ENTIRETY. Though the vocabulary that is used is minimal and far from complex, it doesn't stop him from making his audience ponder. This lack words shows how Lil Pump exceeds the craftsmanship of even the most highly regarded literature authors, as he does not need to excessively use the more complex and intricate words to make his point, this style that he alone has procured has had one of the biggest impacts music history has ever seen. In regards to the impact this young boy has had at only age 17, he can be likened to that of Malala Yousafzai a young Pakistani girl who was shot in the head by militants for daring to go to school in October 2012. She has since dedicated her life to bettering the people of this world, as Lil Pump has. This new young, lively generation has lots to offer. Lil Pump is an exemplary example; he is the hero we need but don't deserve. In the words of Gandhi "You must be the change you wish to see in the world."
If you are a rapper then you should be judged on your lyrical content above all else. If you enjoy the PRODUCTION on Lil pump's tape that's completely different than thinking the tape was good because of pump. Any monkey can jump on incredible production and rap nonsense, but they shouldn't be considered good rappers. What you actually like about this tape, fantano, has nothing to do with Pump's ability as a rapper. That's why if you compare Pump and Kendrick as RAPPERS, and give them the same score, you're coming across as nonsensical.
VersaceCanOpener I guess my point is that if you want to put pump in a separate genre than Kendrick, than you have to identify what makes the genre different. And to be honest, the things that make them different are Pump's terrible lyrics, and a completely different type of production. So if you break down Pump's genre into two components, the rapping, and the production... Fantano should identify what about those components he rates at a 7. If he acknowledges that the lyrics and rapping are bad, then that means he judged the tape mostly off of the production. Pump has nothing to do with the production, he's not a producer. The only thing pump is responsible for is choosing beats, and rapping on them. In that, Kendrick and Pump are the same. If I pick an electronic beat and literally rap gibberish, I can't then claim that my music is incomparable to Kendrick's, solely because a different style of beat. Unless now we base a rapper's "music" off of more than the words that come out of their mouth, which is absolutely ridiculous unless they are a musician as well, and have a hand in creating those beats.
Maesdro813 you're predicating this on the idea that fantano is rating them objectively. He's rating based on enjoyment according to his tastes in preference. Your essays mean nothing lmao
VersaceCanOpener well that is not a review that is an opinion, he as a "professional" should rate something on base rules, body of work, music, prodject, feedback, message, lyrics... everything what makes a rap song. The point is if you are a youtuber/reviwer you need to rate this objectively because people will depend on your reviews. Enjoyment raiting is a part of that not the only thing you base on.
You gave Blank Face LP by ScHoolboy a 5........ DAMN a 7. Blank Face EASILY a 10 DAMN a 8-9 at the least. You also gave Isaiah Rashad's The Sun's Tirade a six when it was at least a 8. Then you gave LiL Pump Self Titled a 7 when it WAS CLEARLY A 80/10 ON MY WRIST. BECAUSE YOU CLEARLY NEED A HIGH LEVEL OF INTELIGENCE TO UNDERSTAND LIL PUMP WITH HIS COMPLEX BARS AND CONCIOUS LYRICS GHANDI COULDN'T UNDERSTAND SMH. SMH.
Wait is this really a thing Kendrick vs lil pump you kidding me right ? I mean like... will you compare eminem to benzino? Lauren Hill to nick cannon? Nas to jay z? OK just kidding about the Nas and Jay z one
Call me Blasphemous, Crazy, AND Stupid....... but I'm gonna say it anyway: "Lil Pump" is a CLASSIC record. Undeniably CATCHY / AGGRESSIVE / CHARISMATIC / GIMMICKY / MEMORABLE / INTENTIONAL / ENERGETIC / & Most of all: UNAPOLOGETIC. Anthony was HANDS DOWN correct for giving it a 7.
The word you were looking for was "provenance". I think this concept is pretty important when reviewing tbh. You have to look at the historical context of things. If Kendrick released a 10/10 album previously, and his most recent album doesn't live up to any expectations, then of course it's not gonna rated as highly. Lil Pump, who hasn't released much and hasn't really made a name for himself other than for the memes, releases something that's actually pretty good and exceeds those expectations, then of course it's gonna get a high rating. I don't think it's bad to review things un-equivalently. A Lil Pump 7 is gonna be different than a Kendrick 7, and a Carly Rae 8 is gonna be different than a Iglooghost 8. I don't know if you review in this style, but I definitely think there's something to say for an artist exceeding expectations and not judging them based on the collective whole of all music ever created and rather what they've done in the past. It's also just kinda hard for numbers to quantify the quality of music. All 7's are not the same, review systems should be flexible and up to debate and discussion, not objective universal constants.
Organizing Lil Pump into a different genre still doesn't change the fact that you gave a trash project the same score as a far superior one. In that sense you should have rated Lil Dicky as a part of its own genre instead of judging him against traditional hip hop like you did in that review which would have resulted in a much higher score. A cohesive accomplished project should not be rated the same as a "gimmicky" project that lacks "technical ability" despite any perceived difference in genre.
rae ville everybody says Jesus would return so when he did return (16 years ago) he knew people wouldn’t believe it so he decided to become a famous rapper and now is lil pump. Don’t forget that famous line in the Bible john 14:11 “yo Jesus knew how to pump up a party. We used to call that boi Mr. Pump”
I do think it's a good point that hip-hop has less discernible sub genres and I don't think the comparison between Damn and Lil Pump is valid, but what makes Lil Pump's simplicity in sound and lyrics any better or more fun than Migos or even Bobby Shmurda, Lil Yachty, OG Maco, etc. I don't dislike the genre but I don't get what makes Lil Pump stand out or even reach the bar set by the genre.
Overcategorization killed rock and roll. Part of what makes hip hop work is that the artist is free to play with different styles and collaborate with different artists in the same big sphere. Most good albums have many songs that can fit into a range of 'genres' off how varied the sounds and styles are. There's also an inner competitiveness that makes it interesting even if the artists are very different because it keeps them all in the same world interacting and creating mutual narratives. Rock and Roll got to the point that people got their own genre if based on their hairstyle and mood. Unless you're into progressive slovak death grunge, that's a recipe for stagnation.
Lavar Ball #BBB #StayInYoLane I agree that it was overhyped and it's not as good as people say it is. I think people overhype it so much because the beat's are good. the best song's IMO is DNA with element being a very close second place. But overall the album does fall a little short to what people are comparing it to.
I think damn is brilliant, it's like TPaB but an easier listen, more replayable, and although it's less 'deep' i think it was brilliant and at least an 8
Did this guy just compare the Ramones to lil pump? At least the Ramones had something to say and could play a few instruments on a basic level. I hate lil pump because he represents the trivialization of music to the lowest demand of skill level ever.

He likes them both for entirely different reasons. I like cheescake because it's sweet. Steak isn't sweet at all. That doesn't mean I don't like steak just as much.
Didn't Anthony say boss by lil pump was trash a few months ago on Twitter but now it's in the fav tracks on the tape?
Top ten times I changed my opinion on tracks.
Scott M white privilege ii wasnt his least fave track in that macklemore album, yet it was part of the worst tracks of the year
People change their minds about music all the time. I thought Damn was a masterpiece when I first heard it but now I feel like it's "good". Not a masterpiece but it's a decent album to listen to, definitely not Kendricks best.

You're totally right, Fantano. Hip-Hop doesn't have many clear-cut subgenres and it makes discussion more complicated.
Remember what sub genres did to rock music?
Bitch just gave me a 7 *(oouu)*
All my pockets green like a melon *(ayee)*
XXXtentacion 2/10, LiL pump 7/10 Ok goodthony musictastetano
he was wrong about lil pump but 2/10 was good for XXX, that album 17 sucked ass
Ctiboš Koroš But 17 addresses real problems in such a cliche way. You can find a million artists who say the same exact thing as X. Plus the acoustics are shit and the whole thing is poorly mixed. At least lil pump is fun to listen to and not just a really bad "edgy" album like 17 was.
17 was trash
Just because you like Stanley Kubrick doesn't mean you cant enjoy the action of a Micheal Bay movie.
I thought people disliked the lil Pump review because you gave it a low score. You know it is a perfect 10 or at the very least a strong 9!
LIL PUMP>DAMN
7:37 This is the record time of how long can melon go without saying Death Grips
The REAL question is HOW did you give pump a 7 and Uzis eternal atake a 4 😤💯
Amusing Music with sanity and correctness. wait what he gave uzi a 4 wtf. melon must be getting rotten.
Uzi and Pump are both ass
Anthony the type of dude to call 911 and ask what's your emergency?
HOW DARE YOU COMPARE KENDRICK LAMER TO LIL PUMP??!?!? Lil pump has music for your soul and makes you THINK!!!
"I dont get how YOU could like it" "If I listened to it i would get bored" simple answer, you are not him and he is not you
TheHolyFox123 dude stfu you worship lil pump with pink dreads da fuck
Okay music isnt subjective thats fake news spread by vegans. If somebody thinks Beethoven is worse than my child bashing a piano keyboard you cant say "oh its subjective"
Kendrick's voice is so annoying whenever I hear him I think he is a joke rapper
If you listen to it backwards you would see why melon gave it a 7
Kendrick is black and Pump is white. We clearly know who is better.
Uhh no

So Kendrick.

I haven’t watched the video yet, but I’m just gonna say that this question is gonna be very hard to answer 😤
Lil Pump is the best rapper of all time
Lil Boat actually deserved a 7
but Pump's tape is actually trash. I mean it's the same song over and over again. So formulaic. So repetitive. This is honestly the first time i am DUMBFOUNDED that you enjoyed something.

A 7 for lil pump and what he goin for ain't equal to a 7 for Kendrick and what he's going for
The background tho
The astrophysics department at Harvard is gonna really miss lil pump now hes fantano certified.
I disliked just for the title.
He's telling you not to compare them
VersaceCanOpener I guess my point is that if you want to put pump in a separate genre than Kendrick, than you have to identify what makes the genre different.
Raigo Kutsar objective review is an oxymoron you fucking imbecile. There are no objective reviews because they are all opinions.
SMH.
I don't understand the confusion. Anthony is entitled to his own opinion, plus those albums are very different. Incomparable, even.
David But theyre both made to be an enjoyable listen and that is what he is comparing
Wait is this really a thing
Kendrick vs lil pump you kidding me right ?
I mean like... will you compare eminem to benzino?
Lauren Hill to nick cannon?
Nas to jay z?
OK just kidding about the Nas and Jay z one
D rose D rose D rose
Call me Blasphemous, Crazy, AND Stupid....... but I'm gonna say it anyway: "Lil Pump" is a CLASSIC record.
Undeniably CATCHY / AGGRESSIVE / CHARISMATIC / GIMMICKY / MEMORABLE / INTENTIONAL / ENERGETIC / & Most of all: UNAPOLOGETIC. Anthony was HANDS DOWN correct for giving it a 7.
You should use a 5 star rating system like videogame dunky. 1/5 terrible 2/5 bad 3/5 enjoyable 4/5 great 5/5 incredible
Michael Hes just reviewing it based off how he enjoyed it, he thought lil dicky was shit while lil pump was fun
Michael hes comparing his enjoyment
Kendrick's album was trash he sounds like some Indian tech support scammer
'Cause a prophet ain't a prophet till they ask you this question;
When Melon give DAMN a 7 is you still a fan?
Damn should have gotten an 8 like if u agree
L
A 9 actually
damn is half as good as tpab so it deserves a 5 :^]
Lil pump is Jesus
THE YETAY how
rae ville everybody says Jesus would return so when he did return (16 years ago) he knew people wouldn’t believe it so he decided to become a famous rapper and now is lil pump. Don’t forget that famous line in the Bible john 14:11 “yo Jesus knew how to pump up a party. We used to call that boi Mr. Pump”
THE YETAY lil pump is my god
Don’t let this video distract you from the fact that Anthony Fantano hates Kendrick Lamar
never clicked on a video faster
You're only allowed to like ONE thing. Choose wisely.
YOU KNOW WHAT, I AM STILL MORE MAD THAT LIL PUMP HAS A HIGHER SCORE THAN MBDTF!
I don't dislike the genre but I don't get what makes Lil Pump stand out or even reach the bar set by the genre.
fantano needs to address this
ESKETIIIIIIT
They are both bad
There's no explaining it away.... you lose credibility period
Bet you pulled that assumption from the crack of your ass 😃
Kendrick trash anyways lmao #guccigang
Lil Dump needs to stop with the shit records...but Kendrick can continue.
pump only knows how to make classics g

In my opinion DAMN was really overrated. I thought it deserved a 6 at most. I just don’t understand the hype. I thought TPAB was good though.
Lavar Ball #BBB #StayInYoLane I agree that it was overhyped and it's not as good as people say it is. I think people overhype it so much because the beat's are good. the best song's IMO is DNA with element being a very close second place. But overall the album does fall a little short to what people are comparing it to.
1st Damn isn't a song. 2nd I know we're just discussing opinions here but I loved DAMN. Very introspective CD
I think damn is brilliant, it's like TPaB but an easier listen, more replayable, and although it's less 'deep' i think it was brilliant and at least an 8
yikes
I think it was so hyped up because of HUMBLE., DNA., and LOVE.. The album relied heavily on hits, but could be seen deeper than that.
Did this guy just compare the Ramones to lil pump? At least the Ramones had something to say and could play a few instruments on a basic level. I hate lil pump because he represents the trivialization of music to the lowest demand of skill level ever.
plus ramones innovated punk, lil pump is doing literally nothing new but making rap worse
