- Lasers are incredible in the movies but in reality they're kinda lame. It's 200X guys! Why don't we have laser force fields and stuff yet?

These are some of the things off the top of my head that lasers are used for that I think are doing pretty cool shit. :)
I think that I heard somewhere that most people in the developed world are generally no more than 7m away from a laser. Which I think is pretty cool also.

You can see John Hutchison burn a hole through a piece of thick plumbing pipe using a small flashlight-sized directed energy weapon (which I guess is comparable to a laser).
It's in the "Death Ray" episode (S03E02) of "Conspiracy Theory with Jesse Ventura".

We have plasma, except with plasma not only is it the energy demand is too high, but also you can't contain it.
Also we do have lasers, very powerful ones at that, it's just you need a power plant to run them.
