@@bobthepoppop You should react to Playboi Cartis recent Rolling Loud Narcissist concert. It has some mix of punk metal transitions. Would like to see your reaction on it
"Place" and "New Neon" were both made years before the rest of the songs and thats why they sound so different to the rest, as his sound has changed alot over time (hence the song metamorphosis)
Ahhh... very interesting. I hadn't considered when individual tracks were made. And that does help to explain some of the change in sound throughout the album. I noticed occasional shifts between tracks.
46:37 he’s actually doing this “baby voice” in real life - there are no pitch adjustments! it’s very unique how he gets his voice to be so high pitched
Let's not act like the autotune don't play a huge part... If you've heard the leaked studio snippets you'd know they definitely tweak his voice quite a bit (even though it is naturally high).
Many Rap fans can't even comprehend this project, for you to jump right in respectfully while still 100% speaking your mind is very impressive. First video I saw from you and 3 min in your intelligence and self awareness was overwhelming and I liked and subbed. Good shit king.
i love how you just respect hiphop and dont judge the album for its sound, how you try to see autotune as an instrument and not as an tool to fix bad vocals, great reaction
The metamorphosis is carti's maturity and his tendency to completely change his music sonically. He would never have done this kind of album 4 years ago if he hadn't gone through this metamorphosis and straying off finding new sounds. He foreshadowed all of this slowly in his album Die Lit with Flatbed Freestyle and R.I.P, but went full throttle in this album. Personally I would have recommended listening to his discography chronologically as it would have highlighted the "metamorphosis" strongly
Let’s be real, both selftitled and die lit are very boring in comparison. I think wlr is enough of carti for bob, atleast until carti drops another project.
Hip Hop is one of the most diverse genres in the world imo. There’s so many different subgenres in it. We have backpack, punk, melodic, emo, alternative, and grunge to name a few. There’s still so much more to it too. It’s actually very impressive how creative producers and rappers can be when they’re on the same wavelength. It’s beautiful.
@@loggerhead837 it may have asked them from Rock don't listen to these kids they don't know what they're talking about, but what I'm saying is there's still more to rap than rock for subgenres
@UCnbfvSNdLrjNkhL0vI1o_1A stfu you just a bandwagon that does what everyone else does . You gave it a 1/10 because that’s what Others said…. Now you like it bc others like it.
30:05 the “metamorphosis” carti is talking about is the style of music he is making now opposed to just a couple years ago. his last project “Die Lit” has a completely different sound to it, more of a mesmerizing melodic sound. with wlr, it’s more dependent on hard-hitting drums, loud and raspy vocals, almost a blend of punk and rap. also, his clothing style has changed drastically from just a couple years ago, as in he used to dress more basic in aesthetics and would wear streetwear like supreme, off white and jordan’s. now he dresses as some have dubbed like “a bisexual vampire”, focused more on high fashion designer, mainly black clothing.
30:20 It's a production trick. It's quite common for producers to EQ the low frequencies of the vocals out to make room for the bass(808s) so the vocals wouldn't get muddy or clash with the bass and kicks.
your interest in the vocal manipulation on this album and the fact that you picked up on future’s use of it makes me think you’d really be interested in young thug

Seriously, this is my favorite album reaction I’ve heard for WLR. And for a beginner hip hop listener your understanding for the music aspect is amazing. Definitely give All of Kid Cudi’s albums listen!!
@@bobthepoppop Its TIME! Haha 😂😂😂😂 I think you should listen to Kid Cudi's debut album before you do Kids See Ghosts, as it is the album that made him who he is and solidified him as one of the greats in Hip Hop, Music and Pop Culture in general. His music is quite psychedelic, cinematic, and he is way more introspective and lyrically meaning than he displayed in this track. He uses his hums to set the mood of the tracks really well. As a lover of lyrics I think you will really appreciate Cudi. He also has a whole Grunge Rock album lol 😂Loving your videos btw, keep it going! 👍😁👍

Man. I’ve listened to hip hop as my main genre for years and I had a much harder time getting into and appreciating WLR than you, someone much less experienced with the genre and the more extreme sides of it. I hope that at some point in life I can learn to appreciate music as easily as you. Truly inspiring.
You listen to too much rap music. Listen to more genres, like late 70s punk and in the 80s when metal really started. That is what this album songs like to me from an energy/vibe stand point
@@dra-j9n2015 I listen to everything, including punk from multiple decades, but for me the really abrasive distorted synths aren’t at all akin to a distorted guitar for example, and although I was a playboi carti fan before WLR it was a bit overwhelming.
Also refers to someone who wants to be your “friend” even when they’re equally “friends” with someone in opposition to you, whether that be in business or blood.
Your immediate reaction to New Neon and liking that sound the most means you neeed to listen to his past albums Die Lit and Self Titled dude, those albums are mostly that type of sound and that’s what he’s been known for, before WLR which was actually his first try at a “punk” sounding album
You will prolly never see this but to answer some of your questions 1. An opp is short for opposition 2. When he’s says metamorphosis he means in his style of music and clothing. He sounded nothing like this on his previous albums and he dressed much different than he used to Hope that helped :)
WLR is extremely experimental and a modern classic if you have the ear for it, modern mainstream punk. Got friends who play in punk bands and they wouldn’t dare stray this far from the herd
Something I never realized about Carti’s music until watching this reaction is how vital pop culture context is to hip hop. I mean, I knew it was important of course when discussing songs that are about social issues, but there are actually so many little cultural artifacts in this album that you (by not fault of your own) couldn’t have picked up on without being invested in Carti’s music for years. Your association with “Vamp” as Red for Bloods the gang is very cool, but I’m not even sure carti meant anything that deep. He literally has been dressing like a vampire for two years and posting on Instagram strange photos of himself that were a total departure from his earlier image (hence DJ Akademics reference to these posts on the intro of ‘Control’: many hip hop fans thought these photos were “gay”). Beyond that: in metamorphosis, Carti sings about using “hieroglyphics” because people can’t understand him, which is a meta and tongue-in-cheek reference to the whole industry telling him his lyrics were garbage. Whole Lotta Red is Carti being the best at being the worst. Embracing punk rock aesthetics to say the least in the coolest way possible and get out before the track gets boring. It is honestly an incredible artistic statement and (unfortunately for your rap discovery journey) is actually kind of an end marker for the “trap” genre, the final stage before a, well, Metamorphosis. I could go on about other little moments: Vamp anthem sampling a classic Vampire movie theme while Carti calls his legion of “vamps” fans to ride with him and the rest of the industry to “get ready” (imagine this track at a concert) or the usually not-concerned-with-subject-matter Carti screaming his heart out over his love for his dead brother (Die4Guy) its and explosive, emotional and exhilarating album that deserves to be heard as loud as possible with as many people as possible. To me, it’s a masterpiece that can only truly be appreciated with enough cultural context. The thing is though, you HAD to hear this record at some point, And I’m really impressed you gave it this much careful consideration and thought. You’re a gem on this platform, man - enjoy the ride!
I’ve been listening to rap since as long as I can remember (like most millennials) and even I had to start adjusting my ears in the 2010s when trap took over. I can’t imagine how jarring it might be for someone going from the funk/soul inspired old school hip hop into the electronic inspired Southern style of trap. Jumping from something like College Dropout into this would make you wonder where exactly the appeal is coming from.
There are so many times when I'm trying to digest something in a song and I know I have a massive knowledge gap regarding the immediate topic. It makes it very tough, so I'm glad you picked up on this. It's also why I try to focus on my own interpretation and hear what the song is telling me rather than trying to read all the side notes on Genius.com. Those notes can help me understand more, but I like letting the art speak to me however it can, even if it means I'm wildly incorrect haha But I think that makes it fun for you guys, too. A different perspective. Different mindset. Thanks for commenting on this specifically. Lack of context/knowledge has made song albums a real challenge.
Bob the Poppop It’s really cool to hear the raw/initial thoughts you have without knowing much about the artist. Love the videos and your interpretations
Around the 30:00 minute mark on the song M3tamorphosis, i think the evolution he's talking about, is his own artistic evolution. Cartis initial entrance on to the rap scene, was as a fairly average uninspiring artist (in my opinion of course), but now that he has spent time working on 3 albums (that have all become more and more experimental), he is morphing into someone i regard as one of the most forward thinking, new and experimental rappers out there. I get his lyrics are far from deep or layered, but as most people have pointed out, thats not the reason we are listening, i suspect most of us are listening because he's a one of a kind artist in the landscape today.
He wasn’t uninspiring at the early stages because everyone was copying him even back then. I think this is a big reason why he keeps changing up his sound
Metamorphosis like butterflies 🦋 he is very first person that I know use this emoji before it’s famous with all tiktok thot and wokeuplikethis* everybody tryna be carti so bad (all them ad-lips talk about what, huh he also got a song called WHAT it’s was amazing) so he had to Metamorphosis change his swag on some other shit /he got song called OTHER SHIT too and I love it slang in Opium is his music record reference to hope it’s feel good without actually fixing things and make it’s even worse
To understand the “metamorphosis” and understand the grand context of that word relating to the album, you would have to listen to Carti’s earlier work. This album WLR was the most different, experimental piece of work he’s ever done. Before WLR, you can see on his previous album Die Lit how the transition started with flirtations of rock and different beats. Before DIE lit his notable work was Self-Titled Playboi Carti, which is and sounds completely different from WLR but it sounds similar to Die Lit. From the start of his career and up to WLR he’s evolving, and I believe after watching your video that he still is evolving.
On top of that, I will admit I love the album. But I believe most of these songs were made more to perform than to listen thru headphones. Mosh pit music
Wow, didn't think you'd be listening to Whole Lotta Red this soon lol, really interested to see what your next pick will be (hopefully My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy)

Others would have dismissed such a foreign sound but you made an effort to understand this album from both a musical and lyrical standpoint. Subscribed.
me and my uncle were arguing about this because he said that "music has no meaning without words" like that literally doesnt make any sense because then any type of instrumental music wouldnt be considered music ☠️ I grew up on music like this so I listen to music like its all one instrument so even when I recite songs I recite it in the same pitch and accent as the rapper
music without meaning is still music. music without words has no inherent meaning to it. the meaning in instrumental music comes from the emotions that it evokes in you and that you then say out loud, with words... there quite literally cannot be explicit meaning without words, sign language counts as all the symbols are agreed upon. in music there are no rules to symbols and abstract expressions: a D minor chord can mean anything, an airhorn in the distance can mean anything.

i love the way he describes carti as using his voice as a instrument that’s what i’ve been wanting to tell people this whole time but i had no idea how to put it
30:12 the metamorphosis he’s talking about is mostly likely his really, REALLY extreme stylistic shift between his last album and this one. A lot of the anticipation for this album came from the fact that people were expecting a really smooth, soft, relaxing album like he’s made in the past, but instead this album shows him completely flipping people’s expectations on their heads. He probably sees his ability to defy what people expect from him and embrace artistic creativity as a massive testament to his own skill, which is probably why the song is so egotistical in the lyrics.
M3tamorphosis makes a lot more sense in context with the rest of his discography. This album was a MASSIVE tonal and audial shift for Carti, hence why he’s undergoing a metamorphosis. Love the videos btw!!!
I respect you for stepping out an experiencing an entirely different world of music. IMO if you watch live concert videos of Carti performaning WLR songs, they sound even better with electric guitars in the background and even HARDER base. True rockstar stuff. Give it a shot

man you the goat for doing this, makes me happy to see people who aren't used to listen to that kind of music actually opening their ears and paying attention. you gotta look into "mumble rap" : artists like future
On Punk Monks, at least how i interpreted it, was that he wasn’t specifically saying he dislikes people who are friendly, more that he dislikes people who are fake. Or people who are just using him to advance themselves. This ties back into the verse where he’s talking about all these rappers he was close with before they were popular, wanting to sign them and help them grow, and basically getting screwed over or they turned his back on him. And no because of this he’s basically just cynical and wants nothing to do with anybody. Exemplified with the ‘don’t talk to me’ line.
I really appreciate your openness and willingness to completely dive into a genre you no nothing about and find the value in it. Your enthusiasm about finding new music inspires me to listen to all the stuff you recommend! Keep going I love your content!
Nice video, one of my favorite albums of all time! In my opinion carti is really good at painting a picture with his songs. Also I know you love good downwoard spirals and the whole album kinda represents a drug trip to me, starting of by turning up, then loosing control and ultimately catching up to a miserable reality. Even the names of the first and the last songs "go to da moon" and "feel like dying" suggest that. Anyway it is amazing that you are so open minded!

Typo: not Carti’s dead brother - his willingness to die for his brother. My bad!
Those notes can help me understand more, but I like letting the art speak to me however it can, even if it means I'm wildly incorrect haha
But I think that makes it fun for you guys, too. A different perspective. Different mindset. Thanks for commenting on this specifically. Lack of context/knowledge has made song albums a real challenge.

I get his lyrics are far from deep or layered, but as most people have pointed out, thats not the reason we are listening, i suspect most of us are listening because he's a one of a kind artist in the landscape today.
lmao he has always been in the forefront of experimentation when he was cash carti
He wasn’t uninspiring at the early stages because everyone was copying him even back then. I think this is a big reason why he keeps changing up his sound
His lyrics aren’t deep but they definitely are layered
Yea a huge context this guy didnt realize is that Whole Lotta Red is a giant step outside Carti's previous boundaries
Metamorphosis like butterflies 🦋 he is very first person that I know use this emoji before it’s famous with all tiktok thot and wokeuplikethis* everybody tryna be carti so bad (all them ad-lips talk about what, huh he also got a song called WHAT it’s was amazing) so he had to Metamorphosis change his swag on some other shit /he got song called OTHER SHIT too and I love it
slang in Opium is his music record reference to hope it’s feel good without actually fixing things and make it’s even worse
Mosh pit music

and the way I listen to music is probably why I cant write lyrics or make any beats
music without meaning is still music. music without words has no inherent meaning to it. the meaning in instrumental music comes from the emotions that it evokes in you and that you then say out loud, with words...
there quite literally cannot be explicit meaning without words, sign language counts as all the symbols are agreed upon. in music there are no rules to symbols and abstract expressions: a D minor chord can mean anything, an airhorn in the distance can mean anything.

Super dope seeing you attempt to understand stuff like carti instead of immediately writing it off.
i love how deep he goes into the lyrics its adorable
this dude can end racism alone, I swear. hes so good at appreciating things, made me realize and appreciate things more.
Man why do people act like just cause someone's skin is white that they don't study and love the hip hop culture and community
why you gotta bring up race bro
Jesus Christ this isn’t about skin color.
bro what 😭😭
Playboi Carti fans think if you don't like his music you must be a racist
i love the way he describes carti as using his voice as a instrument that’s what i’ve been wanting to tell people this whole time but i had no idea how to put it
30:12 the metamorphosis he’s talking about is mostly likely his really, REALLY extreme stylistic shift between his last album and this one.
Came here to clarify metamorphosis as well. You explained it perfectly. He's changing from his SoundCloud melodic sound to his King Vampire sound 🔥
M3tamorphosis makes a lot more sense in context with the rest of his discography. This album was a MASSIVE tonal and audial shift for Carti, hence why he’s undergoing a metamorphosis. Love the videos btw!!!
Also “opium” is his musical label haha
F L O A T I N G (full album) 528HZ 🔥 please tell me what you think up to 20,000 plays now plays now ! ua-cam.com/video/FblY6OdYRSk/v-deo.html

@@rquiiroz Yoooooo another Yeule fan that’s sick
I respect you for stepping out an experiencing an entirely different world of music. IMO if you watch live concert videos of Carti performaning WLR songs, they sound even better with electric guitars in the background and even HARDER base.
True rockstar stuff. Give it a shot
Damn, I respect this man for listening to WLR all the way thru and not being a hip hop head. MASSIVE RESPECT !!!!!!
His explanation of “Over” is crazy !! Really hope he does more reviews of carti and rap/hip hop in general fasho 🔥
when you said “he’s talking about ACT i’m assuming he’s talking about the mouthwash” I laughed out loud and had a huge smile you are so amazing and innocent i love it! First time seeing your channel
Saw him perform live in phoenix. He opened the show with Stop Breathing and it was crazy. This is the perfect body of work to perform live. 🧛🏽♂️🧛🏽♂️🧛🏽♂️
Broooo that was the saddest day of my life :( hopefully he comes back
bro i was at the orlando show it was crazyyyyyyyyy so fucking hype
rico nasty blew up our speakers 😔’
@@edriesgardezi2563 knew the concert was over as soon as that happened. 😭😭 waiting for the new date 🧛🏽♂️🧛🏽♂️🧛🏽♂️
I wanna see wlr live one day so badly
glad it was able to upload
the way you talked about jump out the house actually opened my mind and made me appreciate that song a lot more. you have a really good ear and perspective!
This is such an honest and transparent review, not many people could listen to WLR with an open mindset like this. WLR is definitely not what I would recommend a person who has never heard this style and Carti's voice before, yet you seemed to nail it. Definitely worth of your time to look at Die Lit, its definitely a different sound but I think you'll find it enjoyable. Especially since you enjoyed tracks like stop breathing, over, and sky I think you will find Die lit pretty interesting.
I really enjoyed this vid, cant wait to see more
Die Lit is on my list, though I don't know when I'll get to it. Thanks for the kind comment. It's been so incredible seeing the response to this. By far my biggest video and just nothing but love from the Carti fanbase. Great people IMO
This video made me so happy. Your opinion on everything was so respectful and I love how open minded you are for music.
10:48 that’s laugh when beat changes like he is villain
I can feel your love for music and not just one genre respect not many know how to stop analyzing the song instead of enjoying it and vibing
man you the goat for doing this, makes me happy to see people who aren't used to listen to that kind of music actually opening their ears and paying attention. you gotta look into "mumble rap" : artists like future
Exemplified with the ‘don’t talk to me’ line.
period
This man has done the most in depth analysation of wlr, and hes not even into hip hop lmao. What a true fucking legend bro
huge respect for giving it a listen and giving us your thoughts, really enjoyed the video
and you haveeeeeee to listen to The Blacker The Berry by Kendrick Lamar, you loveeee looking at lyrics so that song will be sooooo perfect for you man. If you enjoy it listen to the whole To Pimp a Butterfly album by kendrick its sooooooo good
Also, good kid mad city paints cinematic imagery of gang violence and peer pressure growing up in compton
He needs to listen to TPAB, it's the greatest album of all time
Track 3 is also a diss track towards the gang “Henchmen” and “Ola Runt” cs he’s closely associated with “Homixide Gang”
i watched this video the entire way through and i just want to thank you for actually listening to the music with an open mind. this is my favorite album of all time and its nice to see different types of people enjoy it
I can’t believe that he is actually listening to carti shits crazy
You’re the man for reviewing this album. It’s one of my top ten all time. Your review of Kendrick Lamar’s latest album was beautiful. Keep up the good work 👍🏻
ITZ BACK 🧛🏻! Really Loved How Ya Took Time To Understand The Appeal Of Carti
