Phil Collins: 'I'm terrible at retirement' | Sunday Night

  • For two decades Phil Collins was everywhere - radio, awards shows, movies and TV - before, just as quickly, he disappeared from the spotlight in 2008.
An Oscar, two golden globes and seven Grammys added to the pressure of fame and the strain of a third divorce eventually became too much.
Sunday Night's Denham Hitchcock sat down with the acclaimed musician as he came out of retirement, as he set the record straight on his turbulent career and explosive private life.

KoolCat. What makes you think I am ‘Miserable’? I’m a drummer with lots of work on. Very happy.
I don’t like over privileged Tories. And of you knew the music industry you’d be aware that I am not the only person who doesn’t like Phil Collins for a reason. Great songwriter though.
And why should I “Guess what”? I couldn’t care less about your opinion. I deal in facts. You in opinion. Wondering who the troll is?

@@jamisbillson4872 tory? Does that mean he's a conservative? Even so, who cares? I never judge an artist by their political leaning or way of life for that matter. I listen to the music. If I like what I hear, I'm willing to overlook everything else. Tax dodging is not something I tend to judge an artist by either, simply because many of them do it anyway. When it comes to calling him a bore, I wouldn't know since I don't know him in person. However, he makes great music, and none of his songs bore me.

bleep77...Of a multi millionaire dodges tax, votes Conservative and has the attitude he has...that makes him a arsehole in my world. A prick that has made some brilliant music. “Another day in paradise” (bit of a Copy if I remember rightly?) is genius. Even if he made a million genius songs...does that give an excuse for being an arsehole? It’s well known...probably on the Internet too. His politics are vile...but then he’s wealthy.

Phil was and will always be a Premier Drummer in my eyes. His rhythmic timing has helped him as a song-writer, singer and all around survivor! People that only know him for the "In The Air Tonight" drum intro, should go listen to him with Brand X on the BBC from the mid 70's. Phil copped Tony William's off Believe It and Chester Thompson's boogaloo from Zappa's Roxy and made it his own! I don't talk about influences in my drumming of 45 years, without the name Phil Collins being included. Oh, snd if you think his son Nick can play, go check out his son Simon too!

I remember Bran-X. I had the album Unorthodox Behavior. But the only reason I heard of them was because I was a Genisis fan and Phil did some marvelous drumming , background singing and song writing on those early Gensis albums. But even some of the post Gabriel stuff was great and Phil was still the drummer on those studio albums.

Steven Mason Thanks for letting me know. I've actually never seen them but I would want to see Phil on drums but he is not exactly in his prime. I prefer to see younger musicians that are in their prime. I stopped going to see bands like Yes, E.L.P., Genesis, etc....once they reached a point of no return and prefer to remember them when they were at their peak. I notice this is especially true for rock bands but even some jazz artists. The music we are talking about is somewhere in the middle; Fusion for lack of a better term.

I have been a Genesis / Collins fan from the age of 15. I am now 56 ! seen both Phil and Genesis many many times over them years I did nearly go to see him in London , I wanted my 15 year old Son to see him ( who's a guitarist and loves Driving the last spike! ) as he was too young the last time Genesis were paying up In Manchester 7/7/07 however having seen Phil on various youtube vids of his recent tour I couldn't bring myself to go as its not really how I want to remember how he was when playing live. And yeh the music's the music and I am sure those who haven't seen him will have enjoyed it but for me I just wanted to remember him as he was when playing live when fully fit both physically and vocally. Although my sister ( who got me into genesis , playing me Robbery assault and battery) is seeing him in October in the states. It will be interesting to hear what he comments will be? we will see.

A Trick of the Tail is my personal favourite album of all time, and in my opinion is one of the greatest prog rock albums that there is. I was born in 1999, so I was eight years old when Genesis were last on tour in the UK (and the world). The first Genesis song I ever listened to properly was Duchess in August 2016. I became and am still obsessed with every bit and every era of their music and their sound. You know what, I think the three eras, that is Gabriel, Early Collins and Late Collins are all superb in their own way. As I said, the early Phil Collins era is my personal favourite. To Conclude, I will say that many adolescents do in fact dig Collins/Genesis and that taste for good music, does and will continue to live on forever.

I'm torn. On the one hand, I want to support Phil's return to the stage, but I also have to be honest.
To me, Phil lost his voice after 1992. I mean the famous voice that could be tender or screaming like a madman.
He seemed to calm down a lot after Both Sides in 1994, and never really sang with any power again.
Dance Into the Light was his final hurrah as a singer. After that, he's always sounded as if he's got a cold.
And hearing Mama being sung in a much lower key on the 2007 Genesis tour, with the voice of a sickly grandfather,
well, that was the final drop for me.
He did sing really well occasionally on the Going Back tour in 2010, though.
So maybe his lazy singing is in large part due to him wanting to save his voice for an entire tour, or because
he needs to really get into the music to make the extra effort?
I miss the screaming Phil of the 1980-1992 period. :(

I've been his fan since the Tarzan movie (don't trip, I was born in the 90's lol) since I heard "You'll be in my heart" I felt in love with his voice, to my surprised one day I found that my dad had the "No jacket required" vinyl and bam! I got hooked. By the time I was a teenager and before youtube existed I watched his videos at vh1 (remember when it was a cool channel ?) and of course Genesis, then I was looking for his appearances at "Miami Vice" , "Buster" interviews and so on.... Phil, your music has been a very important part of the soundtrack of my life in some very, very special moments, one of them my wedding day. I got the pleasure of reading your autobiography and I felt very sorry for those difficult years you had to endure during retirement, you are strong, talented and amazing. Thank you for your music.

I don't think Phil Collins gets enough credit for what he did through his career. The guy played drums, sang, danced and acted. Sold more than 100 million records with Genesis and did it again by his own. If that wasn't enough, he was hilarious too. How such a genius is not in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame? Unbelievable.

Air of the night.. they are playing in the background.. Iv'e not heard it in years and it STILL gives me chills, no kidding.... I saw him in concert in the mid / late 80's it was the most amazing experience and I will never forget it. The smell, the night, the breeze... The warmth and emotion of the audience. The tears the feeling of love. Everything all at once to the point of almost not being containable. He was there with every single relationship and every singe life experience while I was growing up. I posted ass moment ago I almost got a tear while he said he is coming back. I am still listening now (7:15) and well.. the tear came damn it.

It was 1975 when I listened for the first time to Nursery Crime on a little, crappy, mono cassette player. I was 15 back then, had a strong passion for music, I liked very much drums, I was already able to play some guitar but I wasn't a drummer yet, not even an apprentice, but that day, with that first taste of his fine art, Phil instantly became my favourite drummer ever and still is, and Genesis one of my top five bands with Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, King Crimson and Santana. I'm an old school guy, sorry folks...

Not being able to play drums anymore must have made him want to crawl up walls but he had support to keep going and singing.

Phil Collins, I could say, was the first artists I remember from my childhood that got me interested in rock music. Back in the 1980's, there were favorites, like Def Leppard, David Bowie, KISS, Ozzy Osbourne but it was Phil Collins with the 1982 album "Genesis" that really sunk me into the Classic Rock era of music. He's still my favorite pop.rock singer and always will be. Other music artists, critics and fans have criticized his work but to us fans, he'll always be our favorite. I can't wait for him to release a new album.
