Moved to Austin back in 09, before it boomed, it had a small town feel was unique and cool in its own way. Great for outdoor activities. Fast fwd to now Austin is way over priced , lost it's identity, transportation infrastructure light year's behind, bad mix of people which has increased violence, accidents, homelessnes etc. Not to mention the brutal summer's 100+ degrees. I had enough Moved to Raleigh 3 week's ago. Much happier. I see the comparison between both cities, can see Raleigh becoming what Austin is.. I just hope city leaders learn from the mistakes of Austin and don't repeat the trend here.
Thank you so much for your comment! You have an interesting take between both cities. I hope the same for Raleigh as well, hopefully it doesn't grow too fast for its' own good.
Excuse my random question, but can you comment on Raleigh's summer weather right now compared to Austin? Does the heat permeate through the night like in Austin? I really need to get out of here
@pepsico815 this is my first full summer in raleigh. And I work outdoors and am a outdoors person, I can honestly say the humidity here has been brutal temps have been in 90s high 80s but with heat index it feels like 100+.. where as in Austin it's just 100 degrees period. But the difference is at night it does cool down some although still humid it will get into 70s ..Austin stays hot even after sun goes down. Both places are not the best choice if you want to avoid heat all together, but raleigh is lesser of 2 evils
@@battlekat4 Hmmm I talked to alot of people on Reddit and they say that it's mainly just July and August, whereas Austin is hot May-October. They also said this year is hotter than usual in Raleigh. I hope you are enjoying the new city though! I have no idea where to move :(
@pepsico815 I really hope that's true. About summer just being a couple months this year. When I moved here last September it was still warm but nothing crazy then fall kicked in... and yes that statement about Austin is very true about summer lasting april- October it seems like it never ends. Austin and raleigh are two different city's I appreciate raleigh slower pace , diversity, tolerable traffic, but I do miss Austin food scene, some entertainment, proximity when flying to west coast cities. Guess it depends on what your really looking for. But if weather is your concern, Raleigh wins that battle
That's a pretty objective comparison. Nice job. I am curious though if you included Umstead Park in your park calculations. While it's a giant state park, it's also within the city limits of Raleigh.
Thank you very much! Your question prompted me to look into this further, as I've always grabbed the numbers from the City of Raleigh's park calculations....and you are 100% correct, Umstead is NOT in the calculations. And it really needs to be since it's within Raleigh city limits. So just including that, Raleigh goes up to 25 park acres per 1000 residents and that doesn't include the 4000 acres of dedicated greenway space in the calculations either. This is a game changer for future comparisons, thank you so much for bringing this to my attention!!
I think both would be excellent destinations. If you prefer warmer destinations Austin is better, as Raleigh does get into the 30's to 50's for a couple months in the winter. Austin also has the edge with live music, not the Raleigh doesn't have any, but Austin is another level. Raleigh has some really great golf courses and golf course communities that foster great atmospheres for retirees, whether you golf or not (both my parents and in-laws live in two of them, and love it). And Raleigh's traffic is pretty light compared to a city like Austin, so it's easier to get around.

Which city is best for retirees?

Raleigh, hands down. Too many tiny-minds 🧠 in Texas...
I love Austin and the people are very nice. I had dinner with the Austin police and easy to make friends there. Raleigh is very stale.
Glad to hear you like Austin! I hear it's very nice there as well.
Yeah Raleigh is stale but it’s getting better, give it 5-10 years and it may be better 🤷
Austin so much prettier, great downtown, great time .
Austin is a great place to live for sure!
Austin no question
Sounds like someone who’s never been to Raleigh lmao.
