Great video! The only thing I saw that you may want to look into changing, keep the first aid kit closer to the top or in an outer pocket where it's quickly accessible. Love the video!
Recommend to put that med kit into the top flap of the sack. Pulling it out at the very end is a no go. Let's say you're still hiking in to camp and you get an injury...you'd have to rummage through the whole pack just to get to the med kit. That piece of kit should be one of the most easy to find and accessable pieces of kit you carry.
Good balanced view as ever mate. Go light, go heavy, do what you like. Some folk obsess about weight to the point of madness (my mate saws off his toothbrush handles) others have 18 kg full of crap. From experience, I tend to go slightly heavy and have lightweight back up on things like headtorch, titanium stove, lighters and the like. A lot of the lads I’ve climbed/walked with tend to go very light. Very very narrow margins for error on that approach. ATB. 👍
Thanks mate - I'll never be a totally light weight camper. Agree with everything you say. It's a big trade off - I prefer the extra luxuries - plus I always think, heavier gets you fitter and stronger! ATB mate!

I had it back within a week with a small clear patch where the puncture was, you wouldn’t even notice it if you didn’t know it was there. No charge either. Have a great time & look forward to seeing the video👍

Great video mate. Enjoyed your very British view on an introduction to wild camping. The number of times I've had to call off trips with awful weather! Enjoy your trip
Nothing wrong with cancelling a trip because of the weather. Weather can make or break a camping trip, no problem with going another time when its better, makes a more enjoyable experience. 👍

Good video Chris. I like that little goal zero light and I've been looking around just recently for something like that. Really nice backpack as well. it's typical the weather would screw up your trip after waiting for 3 months. I got out in the mountains last Saturday night which was cool.
I could have gone mate, but just sitting out the rain in the tent isn't my idea of the best, first wild camp back. The lantern is ace! Thanks for watching.
Very informative and insightful, for the experienced and newcomers alike. I recently went on Derwent edge starting at cutthroat bridge and traipsed up to cakes of bread on a hot but windy day, carrying a 32 pound pack. It was my first time out for ages and nearly killed me!! Weight is a definite consideration even on shorter hikes. I won't be going over 25 pound in the future, it's just not funny lugging all that weight, yeah you've got a level of comfort when you're set up but the effort to get there means you're too knackered to enjoy it. It's a balancing act and everybody's different in strength, fitness, stamina etc. Thanks for all the great vids Chris and more of the same please!
Agree John, it's a trade off like you say. Ultralight - enjoy the walk up more - easier - but less comfort around camp (although I'm sure people would scream out that this is nonsense and that ultralight doesn't equal uncomfortable) or take a heavier pack with a few more luxuries for on the top. I need to get fit again, so taking a heavier pack will help out. ATB

Petty, I know, but i nearly had a fit when you pulled that gas canister out of your main bag compartment and held it over the Titan kettle which is perfectly compatible with standard bottled gas lol The cartridge will sit perfectly inside the pot, or rest very nicely on the indents in the top of the lid if space inside the pot itself is at a premium.

Great stuff Chris. I've down sized my pack recently which has really helped with the weight. I bough the Atmos 50 and a kestrel 48 which are ideal for me. I still take my beers and 2 litres of water and i think i'm carrying just over 2 stn which isn't to bad. Your right though it makes you so much fitter carrying more weight. My legs are so much stronger than what they were before. Look forward to your next vid mate
Wet wipes .......... toilet and general clean ups combined. And usually a 2 or 3 cotton balls soaked in hand sanitizer for easy fire starting. Was gonna ask about water supply as its been puzzling me .... i guess you dont know till you go once to spec out the area. There could be a pub or a public toilet with taps at the start of your trail. Planning to go by motorcycle so wont have the luxury of a car boot for any non essentials.
Good vid Chris, getting closer to my first camp with the next two weeks, so this was a good list, not had chance to pitch new tent yet (Vango scafell 200) but looks easy enough, my only slight worry is leaving the car somewhere secure ish that won’t annoy anybody
Timely video as I am about to go this weekend for an overnighter. Amazing how similar your packing is to mine and how much of your equipment is the same as I take,( the x therm, Soulo, long spoon, fire starter, tent light, etc are exactly same as mine). Ok, so you gave me the name of the tent light before when I was looking for one, but you get the gist. By the way, if you have a slow puncture in your air pad, fill the bath half way, soft inflate the air pad, stick it in the bath til you find a string of air bubbles and you have located the puncture. Similar idea to a bike puncture, but bigger scale. Normally an easy fix from there.
Thanks mate - believe it or not, I've tried that method, soapy sponge etc too to check for bubbles - and for the life of me I cannot locate the leak - I'm wondering if it's from the valve assembly. I'll be sending it back to Ireland next week - so fingers crossed for a solution. Enjoy your overnighter mate - ATB, Chris
Nice one mate, interesting to see what you carry. Thermarest were really accommodating when I sent my pad back. The weather was awful on Sat as you say, it made for some interesting footage!
I found a 3/4 length early model ThermORest self inflating pad in a thrift store here in my city, only paid #3 US for it last year. I have a Coleman sleeping bag that I have had for at least 35 years, still holding up good !!! I also got a factory refurb Klymit insulated static V off Amazon for at least 20% off full retail price of a brand new one, it has performed quite well on the few trips I have been able to take it out on
Good video mate! I remember my first wild camp. I took everything! I think I had a pack weighing 14kg! Never again, as you learn what is not really needed as you go along. Always great informative content in your videos! I'm sure the guys starting out will get a lot from this. ATB JD
Thanks mate - appreciate the feedback! I still haven't learned per se - and my pack still weighs a tonne - I like a few luxuries, mainly a few beers and maybe some wine too. I guess a heavier pack makes you stronger and keeps you fitter ! But then again, I have done lighter camps and can enjoy the walk up a bit more on those occasions. ATVB - Chris
You mentioned the Fjällräven Singi is a bit pricey, but no comment on the Hilleberg Soulo price? ;) Great Swedish brands, quality gear. Will last forever.
Thanks Henrik, I guess the Hilleberg brand is known for the steep costs but as you say, quality gear. A top bloke has sent us a Nordisk Oppland 3 LW - and we cannot wait to use it - looks like more top quality Scandinavian gear. I love the Scandinavian culture and the gear - the attention to detail is very high and I appreciate that. ATB - Chris
Great vid Chris. Personally, would love you to take the Nord tent for a good work out. Keen to see a good, considered review. It looks an awesome bit of kit. Good load out. I am a massive Fjallraven fan. Currently got the Keb 52. Done me proud here in the UK and whilst backpacking around Vietnam and Thailand. Agree with the comment about tent in a dry bag. I use the Ortleib PS10 with valve. Keeps everything in place and compressed.
Trowel, toilet paper, wet wipes. I was looking at buying a trowel. I've seen Deuce of Spades being recommended, but couldn't find it anywhere. Found a Sea to Summit trowel, but it was €30(!), so I ended up buying a plastic garden trowel for €1 at the closest dollar store and shortened the handle to not be too cumbersome. Will probably do the trick just fine.
Hi, don't spend a lot initially, there are lots of reasonable options around the £100 mark. The 'Lanshan' 1 and 2 - pack down tiny and are great for 2/3 season use. Thanks for watching.
You pulled out your first aid kit last,....It is supposed to be on top or in an external pocket. I was messing around camping with a knife doing some dumb things I saw on UA-cam and cut myself really good a few years back LOL. Got blood on almost all my gear trying to retrieve the first aid kit. So I did it, and I'm not being negative. In the army it has to be marked to show its location,... you may not want sticky tape on your bag,...but anyone with you should know where it is and it should be very easy to find if someone finds you incapacitated.
Great video!. Atm im tryna find a good bag for 1/2 night trips ....I usually only take a tarp and a groundsheet for shelter but I do like to take a sleeping bag, cooker and some other useful bits . Im 5'1 so big/heavy bags are a nightmare 😂
So correct, ultralight kit does not give you the same workout and .... ultralight bags can let you down, as happened to me on the West highland way! Still waiting for my Singi 48, cannot wait! I love side pockets which are out of fashion with the mainstream manufacturers! The one thing not to go ultralight weight with is the backpack, that is absolutely a game stopper if it fails! All is lost!
Sorry mate, Thermarest does not cover punctures, they have a LIMITED lifetime warranty. Quote from the attached leaflet.... "Normal wear, puncture, abrasion, misuse, alteration, abuse, or disassembly of the product are NOT covered"
Bugger yer trumped me on the sleeping bag! I’ve just won on fleaBay an 2004 Un used unissued British Army Jungle bag for £13:50 Bugger. Like the o light head torch and light house torch.
There aren't many to be fair - I know some people camp around Pinewoods around Formby. I don't know the Wirral well so can't say about there. I'd just say, be creative and follow your instincts :-)
Like the brand and pack but find them expensive for what it is..personally I would go to the army surplus store and buy a bergen for next to nothing for the Same quality if not better.
You ever wild camped in Delamere mate? You sound quite local to my area and I’m wondering if it’s a good idea over the next few weeks that’s all. Great video by the way just ordered the lantern you recommended.
Alright Darren - I haven't but I've walked there a few times - I know there is a nice bloke called 'The Cheshire Wanderer' (YT) who walks and camps there - check him out ! Great choice on the lantern too. ATB
Nice Video and great explanation! Checking the video description I didn't see a lighterpack.com link to your setup, do you know it? It's very helpful to figure out the pack weight and it's different categories. Keep up the good work! Cheers
@@MCMOutdoors I've got two pairs, I've just bought the grey/black pair..I find they dry nice and easily when they get wet, and for venting they are top notch..
Got tired of carrying gear i didnt need, started weighing everything, after that i really cut down on gear..... my pack for overnighters weighed in at 4kilo, incl. tent . Excl food which isnt much.
Got it 2 years ago mate from ASDA, I'm sure they will have an equivalent still - just have a look online. It's not the warmest, put backs tiny and does for summer and early autumn.
MCM Outdoors I’ll have a look cheers. Be ideal for me that in the wagon as I have the night heater on for the majority of the night and I’m not having to slog a big bag round with me. As for the wild camping I probably only get 1or2 in through the warmer months anyway so it’ll be another boxed ticked for those occasions 👍🏻👍🏻

Hi new subscriber here, enjoying your videos, like content and your confident style👍well done
Thanks - appreciate the sub and hope you enjoy the back catalogue!
Great informative video mate ! 👍
Thanks for watching Gary 👍
Nice one mate, interesting to see what you carry. Thermarest were really accommodating when I sent my pad back. The weather was awful on Sat as you say, it made for some interesting footage!
Cheers Simon - they have been great in the past so I am sure they will sort it for me. ATB mate
I hope it goes well 👍🏻
knowledgeable and informative mate. Hey I don't take that much on my 2 weeks holiday in the sun :)
Hahaha ! I like your style then mate ! Thanks for watching pal
I found a 3/4 length early model ThermORest self inflating pad in a thrift store here in my city, only paid #3 US for it last year. I have a Coleman sleeping bag that I have had for at least 35 years, still holding up good !!! I also got a factory refurb Klymit insulated static V off Amazon for at least 20% off full retail price of a brand new one, it has performed quite well on the few trips I have been able to take it out on
Sounds like you found a few great bargains there! Enjoy 👍
The Thermacell is great for keeping away midges and other bitey flying things.
Top Tip ! Thank you
Go with the Nordisk, be interesting to see it pitched in the wilds and how it Compares to other Scandinavian tent manufacturers.
I think I'm leaning toward it mate - thanks for watching and your comment mate.
ATVB - Chris
mines still 16Kg, with camera and drones, more in winter hah.
CragScrambler That’s a good point! I have more camera gear than I used too! 👍
14kg?? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I had over 22kg!
Admittedly I'm 105kg anyway... But that was a heavy slog!
I jam all my really heavy crap like batteries, knives, etc in a separate fanny pack.
Deep River Blues! I can play that song on my lil folk ax🎸i love gear pack vids
Ace - thanks for watching
@@MCMOutdoors my pleasure! Keep up the great vids& God willing youll get some cooperating weather for your next time off!
@@MCMOutdoors pleasure is mine buddy!
You mentioned the Fjällräven Singi is a bit pricey, but no comment on the Hilleberg Soulo price? ;)
Great Swedish brands, quality gear.
ATB - Chris
Great video bud. Really like the look of that rucksack. Which model is it please? Gearing up for getting back in the hills, can’t wait. 👍
Thanks for watching - it's a Singi 48 by Fjallraven 👍
Great gear review thanks. I didn't see any edit cuts? well done
Thanks for watching! Manage to ramble on in one take 😂👍
Absolutely brilliant 😎 over £150 on a sleeping pad and a tenner on the sleeping bag ha ha ha ha! Nice one!
Thanks for watching 👍 Yes, the sleeping bag I chose to take on this occasion was indeed £10
Thanks Simon, I'm edging toward the Nordisk mate 👍
Alright mate. Im a new sub. Loving the ruck an gear. Im out for a 1 nighter on Saturday up Edale.
Alright Jay, enjoy your camp in the Peaks
@@MCMOutdoors cheers buddy can't wait its been a while purchased new tent vango banshee pro 200 so can't wait to put her to some good use.
Great advice 👍
Thanks for watching mate
Great instructional video Chris for backpacking. Only one question really, what if anything should I take for crapping in the great outdoors? 🍺⛺️👍🤣

Good point Mike - I forgot about the loo situation ! Thanks for watching.
I also take cheap nappy bags for the loo roll and wipes to hike them out. It's not nice when you see shit covered wipes left laying around. 🤮
Thanks for the video
I may have to envest in a ultralight tent as that is the one item that takes up a lot of space and weight.
Top tip, thanks for watching 👍
Top video
Thanks for watching Adam
Great video!. Atm im tryna find a good bag for 1/2 night trips ....I usually only take a tarp and a groundsheet for shelter but I do like to take a sleeping bag, cooker and some other useful bits . Im 5'1 so big/heavy bags are a nightmare 😂
Good stuff, thanks for watching!
Just what i was looking for, heading out for first wildcamp on friday, scotland by the way. Subbed .
Thanks for the sub! Appreciate it and enjoy your camp!
Totally agree mate - some things are just heavier. Laws of physics! Enjoy your Singi, it's an immense pack!
2:00 In Sweden we love getting fitta 😀
😊👍⛺
Sorry mate, Thermarest does not cover punctures, they have a LIMITED lifetime warranty. Quote from the attached leaflet.... "Normal wear, puncture, abrasion, misuse, alteration, abuse, or disassembly of the product are NOT covered"
Thanks mate, they've said they will repair it - as I can't source the leak, so can't say fairer than that 👍
That's thee nicess backpack I ever seen! Wow I really like that pack. Where did you get it from?
It's a good one - Fjällraven Singi 48
You could put the thermarest inflated in a bath to find the leak
Thanks mate - I've tried that - and still can't source it, so back to Ireland it goes. Thanks for the suggestion. Chris
Good informative video, thank you.
To check for any air leaks inflate and put in shallow bath
Thanks mate - tried that and still can't locate it - think it's the valve. ATB
Bugger yer trumped me on the sleeping bag!
I’ve just won on fleaBay an 2004 Un used unissued British Army Jungle bag for £13:50
Bugger.
Like the o light head torch and light house torch.
Result 👍
Great informative Vid, your obviously from the Liverpool area, are there any good wild camping locations in the merseyside area ?
There aren't many to be fair - I know some people camp around Pinewoods around Formby. I don't know the Wirral well so can't say about there. I'd just say, be creative and follow your instincts :-)
Like the brand and pack but find them expensive for what it is..personally I would go to the army surplus store and buy a bergen for next to nothing for the Same quality if not better.
Each to their own mate, all very subjective at the end of the day and we all have our preferences. ATB
ATB
MCM Outdoors cheers mate I’ll have a little look at some of his videos now, appreciate it 👍🏼
Nice Video and great explanation! Checking the video description I didn't see a lighterpack.com link to your setup, do you know it? It's very helpful to figure out the pack weight and it's different categories. Keep up the good work! Cheers
Thanks, I'll check that out 👍
Good video, thanks 👍
Thanks Nigel
This was really useful - many thanks!
Love watching kit videos! I need to get around to doing my own. Whats the weight on your packed bag out of interest?
I don't know the exact weight sorry, it was heavy 😑 I'd say around 15kg. Thanks for watching mate
Any easy spots in north west England I could get away with a wild camp and access fairly easily?
Got a pair of them Montane terra trousers, they’re the bees knees.
Good value. Ace reviews too 👍
@@MCMOutdoors I've got two pairs, I've just bought the grey/black pair..I find they dry nice and easily when they get wet, and for venting they are top notch..
If you was going wild camping for a longer time, how would you store multiple gas cans in your pack safely? And how would you store them at night?
They're perfectly safe to store mate as they are. Overnight the same too they self seal.
MCM Outdoors Oh ok, thanks for the response👍
Got tired of carrying gear i didnt need, started weighing everything, after that i really cut down on gear..... my pack for overnighters weighed in at 4kilo, incl. tent . Excl food which isnt much.
Happy days @4KG 👍
Nice bag. What about your trowel and emergency loo roll ;-)
ua-cam.com/video/KsWyb51T5HQ/v-deo.html
Good point - forgot about that aspect ! Noted !!! Thanks for watching
The Cragol that hilarious
Did you purchase that sleeping bag recently Chris? That’s a great size and be ideal for me with work aswell as camping
Brilliant video,I always like to see what everyone packs.
Thank you for sharing
ATB Dan. 👍👍👍👍
Thanks for watching Dan :-)
hi mate wat do u think ov the berghause backpacks .cheers good vid as am still learning cheers
Jason, I think they're great value and well made !
@@MCMOutdoors thank u .

You forgot loo roll! I’m off out tomorrow wild camping, taking my son for an adventure
I know! Haha, that is a definite must have (just in case mind)
What happened to the vango Tempest 200 bro was looking forward to seeing you out in that? 👍
It's coming mate - I need to use the new tent we were kindly sent - we have lots to test pal so don't worry, it will be coming !
MCM Outdoors ah right I see understand 👍 I’m having a right mare in deciding between that and the vango cairngorm 300 tbh so many tents to choose from now it’s doing my head inn lol
I feel your pain mate!
