Well early explorers did say they passed huge cities when they travelled along the Amazon and I think most of those stories were laughed at since European diseases wiped out the local populations and the forest reclaimed everything by the time later explorers arrived. This is fascinating and I, too, would LOVE to know more about the peoples who lived in this lost civilization!

I find it amazing that even in this day and time we are still finding lost civilizations and cities and many other wonderful historical people and places.
There are also mounds like these ones in the Bolivian Amazonian jungle (Beni). Their discovery is relatively recent and was also seen from the air. This area is called "Llanos de Moxos" (there is information en Wikipedia, Erickson, Clark and others) y some dates go back to 2800 years. Something related but recent (1906) is about the Brittish explorer Percy Fawcett who was looking for possible El Dorado and died trying; 100 more people died looking for him. He was a sort of engineer who traced the limits between Bolivia and Brazil so he walked through these jungles like 7 times.
Fawcett is a forgotten hero. Imagine if he had returned to inform the world of his findings? Some of his descendants live just a few miles from me but they don't know much about what happened.

@@loreman7267 I am sorry to say that the story becomes darker. Fawcett's great grand daughter and her husband went out to the Amazonion areas where Fawcett disappeared to try to retrace his journeys seven or eight years ago. Sadly they both died in a road accident. It was their honeymoon. How much more terrible could this tragic story become?
I'm curious to see what else is in the surrounding areas in the region. How many other cities/settlements are hidden in all that growth? Keep up the great work!
That is amazing Kayleigh! Lidar really is a miracle tool in the field of modern archeology. It staggers the imagination that mega cities were being built two millennia ago and in the Americas. The site in Northern Guatemala called El Mirador seems to be on a scale in area comparable to this site. The massive pyramid discovered there, called La Danta is believed to be larger in volume than the Great Pyramid at Cheops. Having a unique triadic shape, these massive pyramids were once thought to be hills until archeologists uncovered them and removed the tropical foliage that hid them for perhaps 2,000 years. Both sites may be contemporaneous in age. Interesting if trade existed between both of these megalopolis size city cultures.
I once spent 3 weeks hiking around the lowlands of Central America and the Yucatan peninsula, staying in villages with a guide who spoke Spanish but I could not speak Mayan. If you ask any of the natives there they pointed to almost every hill and said that's just a buried ruin. "There used to be cities all around here." We're finding the same as true for huge portions of the Amazon. There's so much bias and archeology and history in general that I think that slows us down sometimes in making new discoveries or accepting the conclusions of new discoveries
