Solder a 470K resistor across the terminals of the cap that was holding the 300V. It won't draw any meaningful amount of current when the amp is electrified, but it will discharge the voltage over the course of a few minutes once you power it down.

Hi Dan, I'm an organist. But, we all love good amps! For about 9 yrs. I did professional wood working for a pipe organ co. And as a working sculptor, I do design work as well. So, be forwarned, I may strafe you with suggestions from time to time. Love your custom amp. You are a very lucky man in that your cab isn't buzzing, w/o felting the unglued surfaces! You might like to experiment with thinner baffle and cab back boards - as soft are could give you some interesting tones. For me, the disapointment was the sloppy printing (almost as sloppy as mine), over the controls! Uggg! If you go to an arts supply store, you can buy sheets of nice 'press on' lettering that go on with a stylus. These can go on before the pots and switches go in. Then, spray acrylic or a clear Plexi cover goes over the lettering. Then the controls. Lastly, clamp scrap backer boards before (drilling small positioning pilot holes first), using backer boards while drilling OR sawing will elleminant wood tear-out. Now, you are a craftsmanship! Cheers!

Love your videos! So I went ahead and bought a KLD 18. It was shipped completed so all I had to do is just plug it up and go. It sounds great beside my Marshall and Genz Benz and it holds its own next to both. Its a great little amp, I really like it so thank you! Eventually I will purchase the 15 as well so I can learn the ins and outs of a tube amp. I use EHX tubes in all of my amps and have always been happy with them but I have been considering using the Sovtek as well. Great info and thank you!!

I work on espresso machines and work with 220v caps all day long. I just short them with an electricians screwdriver and it works great. No resistor or alligator clips needed 😎. Love the videos btw!!

The best guitar to make a Fender amp sound GREAT have Gibson P90 pickups. My 61' dbl cutaway all mahogany Les Paul Jr. with a single P90 sound amazingly full and harmonically rich through my '65 black face FENDER BASSMAN, but the best part is the amps clean to dirty tone just by pick attack. Fender's are a strange hit or miss though. Tonally and volume output wise, my 2-6L6GC Bassman plays circles around the 4-6L6, '65 Fender Band Master I used to own. I prefer Gibson's through Fender amps, as opposed to Strats. Tele's sound decent though. The recent Fender Bassbreaker amps with those 4- 6bq5/el884's sound like they have a personality complex. However, iirc they make a 2-el34 version that sounds very Marshall like...which is great.
Nice job and fun little project. That tube claim "absolutely blows brand X, Y out of the water" is a strong statement that kinda needs to be backed up ;) Look at Pete Thorns video shooting out 30 some odd 12AX7/EC883 . The degrees of separation wasn't anything blowing anything out of the water.

yes, they are right about amps vs volts... on live plugged in systems. The leads on a capacitor are very small and obviously can't deliver large currents (big wires deliver large currents on plugged in systems). So you are perfectly right in measuring volts. The zap you could get from them will sting, not kill and nowhere near any damage to you. It will just surprise you. So measuring with your voltmeter is perfectly normal and good to show others how its done. By the way, a resistor is good to drain them, but a flathead screwdriver will do just fine too as its only a short zap to drain them without any harm. Don't listen to those who aren't electricians or electronics technicians. But good on you to show your respect for hidden voltages and show others what is there.

NOS tubes are your best bet for good tubes. New old stock, NOS, is available on eBay. A tube tester and the knowledge of the correct way to test the tubes will go a long way in helping you derive your own sounds, tones, that you are looking to create. Last bit of advice, old circuits, like fender 6V6/6L6 had a fatal design flaw to watch out for, make sure tubes are installed upright and not upside down because the heat rises from the tubes and if the rest of the circuit is subjected to that heat over time, the capacitors and resistors will go bad. Heat dries out the Caps, and bad caps over work the resistors, causing cascading failure. Good luck, and have fun y'all!!
Tubes dont make a diffrents in frequency respose, you cant make a amp brighter or warmer. The tubes can make a amp louder or quieter they dont make a diffrents in frequency respons. Ther have been multiple null tests done an ther was little to no diffrents.

Hi, those home made amp videos inspired me to create my own. I built an Orange PPC112 sized open back cab with a Jensen p12q alnico speaker which I got used for 70eur and a Fender champ clone which I wired myself from a kit and a 50s tube radio which I had lying around. Both cost me 270 eur :)

Looks great man. The mismatched glow you talk about is nothing. It's just the filaments glowing. I still think the tube had an issue and will redplate again. Glad you replaced them. Did you check bias when you installed the new tubes?

The issue with tube bass amps is that you need clarity. That means big transformers, a good ultra-linear supply and good filtering. Look at a Fender Bassman 135 or 100. Huge transformers. These alone cost a fortune. Small transformers will break up earlier than useful, and be unable to handle the higher pressure of pushing bass.
@@whatsstefon conversely, look at the Ampeg B15 (which is my dream amp)'s transformer; size isn't necessarily the issue, the price is. $200+ for an aftermarket transformer. Trinity offers an amazing B15 kit but it's $700 for the head kit and $700 for the Portaflex cab kit. I can buy a used set for $600!
Awesome! I have a Valve Jr. I modded the crap out of in '08 for more drive and way less headroom than my old Music Man 112 RD 65 is capable of. Always wanted to try a CeriaTone kit or a stripped Plexi circuit. Keep up the awesome content!
@@GunsandGuitars Mine is a first gen with the 8 digit serial so it needed a lot of help. It was a display model at the local music store during their Christmas sale so I got the head for $80 and the matching cab for $50 with minor tolex imperfections.
The best way to drill a hole without reaping the wood is to use Forstner bit most of the time you use them with a drill press but with care you can also use it with a hand drill.
Awesome video brother!.. As a wood guy though, can I offer up one suggestion?... Try a “gel stain” on your cabinets to avoid much of the splotchy-ness... Birch plywood is notoriously prone to splotches and gel stain is the easiest product out there to use!.. I enjoyed the vid and the amp is awesome!..

Hey G and G, it's actually both, volts and amps. Your amp most likely has a 12AX7 preamp tube, I have read in Gerald Weber 's amp book, you can ground pin 1 of the 12AX7 and drain all the filter cap's, the ones that will get you. Research this information, of course. In making test connection 's in your amp, keep one hand in your pocket. Can drain one at a time, check voltage. Nice looking rig. Be good, C.

I would want to replace the grill cloth on the speaker for more of that mesh. It just looks better, would allow the two units to match visually and the grill cloth is looking like it is sagging.

Very nice match set.
A simple way to check and discharge a cap is a lightbulb and 2 wires the bulb will light and go dim when amps are down...... Try it.
I would personally argue that a good tube set is probably more important than the amp... But i must say that is a really cool amp.

Awesome! I have a Valve Jr. I modded the crap out of in '08 for more drive and way less headroom than my old Music Man 112 RD 65 is capable of. Always wanted to try a CeriaTone kit or a stripped Plexi circuit. Keep up the awesome content!
I had a valve jr I intended to mod as well. Never got around to it before I sold it.
@@GunsandGuitars Mine is a first gen with the 8 digit serial so it needed a lot of help. It was a display model at the local music store during their Christmas sale so I got the head for $80 and the matching cab for $50 with minor tolex imperfections.
The best way to drill a hole without reaping the wood is to use Forstner bit most of the time you use them with a drill press but with care you can also use it with a hand drill.
Time to get some water slide decal paper to make proper labels for the knobs. If you do, the marker will come off with alcohol or acetone.

Awesome video brother!.. As a wood guy though, can I offer up one suggestion?... Try a “gel stain” on your cabinets to avoid much of the splotchy-ness... Birch plywood is notoriously prone to splotches and gel stain is the easiest product out there to use!.. I enjoyed the vid and the amp is awesome!..
Thanks for the tip Jon! Honestly, I like the blotchiness. It’s part of the rustic/relic/shabby sheak look I go for. This is good advice for people trying to make more beautiful designs, I just like mine to look imperfect from the start :)

Hey G and G, it's actually both, volts and amps. Your amp most likely has a 12AX7 preamp tube, I have read in Gerald Weber 's amp book, you can ground pin 1 of the 12AX7 and drain all the filter cap's, the ones that will get you. Research this information, of course. In making test connection 's in your amp, keep one hand in your pocket. Can drain one at a time, check voltage. Nice looking rig. Be good, C.

Thanks for the info. Great for the DIY crowd! How do you like that .Eminence speaker with, is N Dyme tech? I used to use EV n dyme (forget how to spell N dyme) mics and really loved them. Does it work in this speaker? Maybe I'd put a more permanent finish, if I built one, just for durability. Yours, however, has a really cool custom look!

i get blank name plate plastic cut to size from a sign shop, then cut and drill them after the chassis is cut, before the wiring.
I would want to replace the grill cloth on the speaker for more of that mesh. It just looks better, would allow the two units to match visually and the grill cloth is looking like it is sagging.
