If the goal of an artist is to inspire emotion: Then goal achieved.
But my reaction to this song was a bit different from what i'm reading in the comments here. I didn't find it peaceful or melancholy or bittersweet. I found it RAGE INDUCING.
The message of hopelessness, that the lady should give up on the guy... "now you know, you're free to go". I had to fight mental illness to recover my husband from the stranger he became. We both fear the day that he loses touch with reality again. The best and greatest comfort to him is my reassurance that i will never give up on him: That i will fight for him when he can't. And that i will still be here waiting to welcome him back when he's strong enough to return.
The idea of giving up on the love of my life is rage inducing.
the song is still beautiful. But it's not one of my favorites, as i cannot relate even remotely to the song.
Agreed; he's afraid of authenticity and inauthenticity simultaneously and is resigned to have Paradise remain out of reach because of it. It's a prayer, really, "Go ahead and leave me here in this prison, there's no way out." But, there is...the irony is that his authenticity of these admissions is true Salvation.
This song makes me have peace when Im deppresed
