    I like the fact that at the YAGP pointe shoes are forbitten for younger children because if they weren't - maybe some kids would feel forced to go on pointe because so many other are competing on pointe when they are not ready yet.

      Absolutely! There are many dancers who work very hard and are very good dancers. However, there are certain dancers who have that charisma that lights up the stage and makes it hard to look away from them. Yuna has that in spades!

    I was only 8. I was in class with 10-14 year olds. A new teacher came to town & didn't realize how young I was. The entire class got our first pointe shoes. Yes, I've had knee and back issues.

    I found you somehow after I somehow found Leon the Lobster. Obviously I spend way too much time online. But when we were kids my father worked at dredging the bay and they would come across illegal lobster traps and one day he brought home a lobster in his lunch bag and let us play with it all afternoon. We thought we had a pet. But then my mom cooked it. Obviously I didn't eat lobster until I was an adult.

    In my dance career there was and is a hard rule for when to go on point that deals with bone growth and having yor period. Safest time.

      wdym?

    • @dontfindafuckingname
      @dontfindafuckingname Місяць тому

      That might be the same rule they use to determine whether you get put into a correctional corset if you have scoliosis! Basically the onset of your period tells your doctor when your bones finish growing (idk the exact timeframe) and once you're done no corset for you! I imagine the opposite is true for point shoes, you really don't want your skeleton to be super malleable when you're on point, that just screams future problems 😢

    • @NightWink129
      @NightWink129 4 дні тому

      @mariefromseier Growth plates in the ankles need time to mature along with the rest of the physical body, otherwise they'll most likely be damaged and stunted, leading to bone problems or similar when older.

  • @nenya3273
    @nenya3273 2 місяці тому

    there are some people who inhabit and utilize every single inch of their bodies and move them exactly the way they mean to. dancers tend to fall into this category, but it is awe-inspiring and a little scary to already see it in girls that young. if i'd seen yuna's performance without knowing this was a pre-professional YAGP performance i would have fully believed she was a much older dancer, the way she moves is so purposeful and elegant. kind of terrifying, but really cool to watch.

    Thanks @Josephine for talking about the age issue with starting pointe work. When I was a student my class was put en pointe together when I was 9, and I wasn't ready at that time. If I had been given the option to drop back a year I would have jumped at it, but I wound up switching to a less elite school instead and broadening my training beyond ballet. I did have a brief professional career as a dancer, in other forms, and eventually became a ballet teacher and coach, and continued performing ballet (yes, en pointe) as a guest with a youth group. However, t I'll always wonder whether I could have gone further with ballet had I not had a bad start too early en pointe. I made sure not to put my students up too early, perhaps erring on the side of too cautious, recommending xrays (which would have caught some issues of mine that needed surgery) and preferring menarche as a general indicator of health/strength along with relatively strict technique requirements. Some of my students and mentees went on to do well at YAGP and dance professionally after high school.

    So I am not a dancer but I do enjoy watching ballet. I know very little about it but I respect the athleticism involved in making the movements seem so light and effortless. I never thought about the dancers feet playing a role in this. I have been told my whole life that I have dancers feet. My arches are so high and my foot flexible enough that I can pick things up with the arch of my foot. (They do have to be wide enough for this it’s not like I can pick up a shirt laid out flat or something). I have learned that this is a bad thing for people who are not dancers. Normal shoes never really support my arch. I have tried so many many different inserts and have never found one that fills the arch of my foot. It has caused me so much pain in my ankles over the years because if I am not paying close attention to how my foot falls my ankles will roll inward as I walk or run. Do dancers ever have this issue? Do you have any suggestions on brands of inserts or shoes that I could get to help with this?

    How can you tell if someone has naturally “good” feet or if they had to work harder at it?

    • @stephanie-fh5qv
      @stephanie-fh5qv Місяць тому +1

      Because of the shape of the foot and wrist. I have naturally good feet and they have the same extensions as her. You can still have it with hard work, liken she says, but never to the point like the girls with natural born feet. (Which also has to work btw, because you need strong feet.)

  • @NightWink129
    @NightWink129 4 дні тому

    You're not supposed to go on pointe before 11 or 12 because the growth plates in your ankles would otherwise be damaged. I have no doubt that some get lucky, which just boosts their egos to say it's okay to start younger. But, there is a reason dance instructors, PTs, and doctors say no bueno.

    I really dislike YAGP, for me it's not dance, it's not artistic, it's too gymnastic. These girls repeat the movement - and it's very nice btw - but it's not natural, all of these variations are made for ballerina, and no for apprentice.
