My favorite lure is a Hopkins Shorty, Gold color, 3/4 or 1 ounce in weight. The Shorty in Silver is also fine if you can't find the Gold.
I use these lures with great success either cast from the beach or pier and/or vertically jigged from a pier. I use a 2-foot leader of 50lb mono with a snap to the spoon and a ball-bearing swivel connection at the main line connection with the leader.

Great video, Captain! I am going tomorrow in Mayport. NE Fl. I like to use silver or plastic Gotcha plugs and cut the barbs from the hooks. When the Spanish spit out glass minnows I would put glass minnows on the hooks and they would instantly strike!

I like swim baits and a spoon. Never can go wrong with either.

No, it is a bit late to be out on the beach, though there still are a few in the bay.

What size casting spoon do you typically use? It looks like 3/4oz but can’t tell. Thanks

Yes, 3/4 most of the time, good all-round size for the bait we have.

At the speeds we troll for mackerel, 6-7 knots, the planer gets the spoon down much deeper. Also, much like a flasher, the planer also adds action to the spoon.
