  • In this video, I bring a beast of an XC mountain bike back to life with a light restoration build. It is a 200 Gary Fisher Sugar 2. This bike surprised me on how poised and balanced it was for its age. Now, with a more modern 1x10 drivetrain, this ride rips thru the woods.

    Great bike dude. You are 100% accurate when you say that these old sugar's ride like modern bikes. Its 2023 and I just finished a 24hr XC race on a 2000 Sugar 1. It was the only 26" bike in a field of 1000 riders. I have 3 sugar's from this era (2000 Sugar 1, 2001 Sugar 4, and a 2002 Sugar Team Issue, all with full XTR). With nothing more than some basic care and maintenance, these bikes have never let me down. Still shift smooth as silk, even under full load and handle any cross country terrain I care to throw at them. Awesome bikes!

    I've just bought the same frame, black, a bit abused, size M, with the diskbrake mount, but with no structural issues. I paid peanuts and I'll start to rebuild itas soon as I'll find the time and the good parts. I'm happy like a child !

    Absolutely beautiful build! Truly love the red, white, and blue color scheme, and your choice of the white cable guides. Must admit I cringed just a bit at the 1x choice, but after thinking about it, 10 gears is quite enough for most riding. Thank you for sharing this build. Very well done.

    One by 10 was a awesome choice! I like how you subtly updated this bike but kept its original character

    Sugar 2 owner here. I had wide bars until today just put the original narrow ones back on. Love the retro feel. This is now my gravel bike. I would switch out the drive but the original 3x works smooth as butter.

    I love videos like this. I enjoy wrenching on mountain bikes; watching someone breathe life back into a bike that everyone had assumed left its best days behind is more satisfying than I can put into words.

    Thanks for the inspiration - I followed your example and modernized my (original owner) 1999 Sugar 4 with a 1x11 Deore drivetrain, wider tires, TPU tubes, wider bars, and shorter stem. It was a fun project and the bike is even more fun to ride now. I plan to pass it on to my 15 year old son.

    That's a sweet Gary Fisher Sugar 3 you have there, It looks better after but I would have kept the 3 by, Having said that I have a fair selection of 3 by bikes, but I still get drawn to the 1 by 9 on my Genesis core 20. Keep uploading videos like this.

    Very nice. I have a 1999 Sugar in my garage that has been gathering dust for some time, as I have mostly been riding roads for the last 20 years. I recently bought a nice gravel bike, and while I love how it handles on groomed trails, I learned that I need a real MTB for the truly bumpy stuff. You've inspired me to clean up my Sugar and give it a go again!

      @@DePuesshop There are a few in Central FL available, but the price point is the limiting factor. Personally, I dont have a ceiling, but my wife does. lol.. Im currently restoring a Giant NRS 2 and adding another "Project" would get me evicted.

    Nice build. I recently built up a 2006 Gary for my nephew, Did the same thing 1x10 Deore. I think my front shock on my 2022 Marin weighs 27 lbs all by itself. I replaced it with a nice aluminum straight fork. I ride gravel roads and paths so I do not need a shock.

    I have this very bike. I have right thumb issues and would like to do this same mod but with a 10 speed grip shift on the right. Do you know if there a compatible SRAM gripshifter?

    • @DePuesshop
      @DePuesshop  11 місяців тому

      I'm not familiar with the Sram grip shift compatibility. Usually, you can mix Shimano and Sram together for 7 speed and less, but I'm not sure about above that.

      @@DePuesshop Thanks a lot. I've just started researching how (or if) I'll be able to switch to a 1x10 or 1x11 while keeping my wheel (i.e., use the same splined hub from 2002, XTR rapid rise rear derailleur) and most importantly, switching to a gripshift shifter on the Right side. Unsure if the grip shift pull/ratio would work with the XTR RR. It might just be I'll have to get a few new components including possibly a wheel...

    • @DePuesshop
      @DePuesshop  11 місяців тому

      @pittsburghandy3753 If you have an 8 speed or more hub, you can put up to a 12 speed cassette on it. If not, you can change the hub body. I have another video on how to do that. I have never worked on the rapid rise derailleur, so that may complicate things because they essentially work backward.

      @@DePuesshop i like that style more than mine! Did or do you have any issues with the cane creek making a slight ‘thud’ like it’s topping out on rebound? I’ve rebuilt mine and tried adjusting the piston plates but still have the same results. I have to be missing something

    • @DePuesshop
      @DePuesshop  9 місяців тому

      Yes, that Cane Creek shock has a thud when it rebounds. I don't know the issue either. It seems like there needs to be an elastomer bumper in there.
