- It’s a hot and sunny afternoon in Latvia. The second day of the biggest music event in Baltics - Positivus festival, and here we are, chatting with Mike Kerr - the bassist-frontman half of the British power duo Royal Blood. In this video, Mike talks about his earliest memories of music, the unique sound of Royal Blood and why the bass guitar is now his main instrument.

2:28 Weird than in a previous interview he attributed a lot of sound to being influenced by Muse but that seems to have been completely dropped
Yes thats true but I think they are, even if they don´t say it haha :D for example their new song "King" sounds so heavy influenced by Muse^^
All artists do that, one interview they say one influence, then on other one they say another, is like just saying what is at the top of your head at the moment
he is talking there about where he got the more than one amp idea from, wheras muse is more of a songwriting influence
@@EpicStuffMan1000 Yeah, also if i can recall correctly in another one (the boss one i think) he talks about how to get a really good distorted bass sound, and he talks about Chris getting that tone recording in two amps like on Hysteria.
He still talks a lot about Muse in most interviews

4:33 this is so major. Such a solid thing for people learning to hear. Embrace that lost feeling when you're new to something. Don't take to all the theory right away and try so hard to make sense of things... just stew for a bit in the unknown. Trial by fire.

They sound like if you played a 44rpm DFA1979 record on 33 1/3rpm by mistake.
Or just DFA trying to play after accidentally snorting some crushed up tramadol instead of coke.
Johnathan Doe they literally sound nothing like death from above. sure the rig is similar but the riffs are way different.
OCEANS If you slow down death from above and play them to a bouncy/ploddy beat, the riffs are very similar. Speaking as someone who’s done it on bass for lols.
You can also do the reverse, play Royal Blood fast and it kinda turns into DFA
Johnathan Doe yes but in order to make them sound similar the amount of tweaking is just absurd, means you’re changing the groove and beat, essentially creating a completely new song.
I swear to god if you guys need to be inducted into the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame once we hit the 40s!

I also played piano since I was 4 years old and quit when I was 13. piano sucks man.
Piano is how real musicians learn how music works. I don’t take any musician seriously who says any instrument let alone piano sucks.
And I am mainly a guitar player, studied classical.
@@didsheaskaboutme Well, honestly I don't think piano sucks but how they teach little kids hate music. I've never learned rock song or something interesting, it was mostly Czerny and it was irritating for a kid to play songs they don't like over and over and over and over. the piano class was more like a factory that run by unsuccessful pianist and collage students to make money out of middle class parents. idk how the other country teach music to kids, but these are how I felt r n. (back then I thought piano's not good for me because I don't have any talent even though I've got absolute pitch.)
Piano doesn’t suck. Everyone has different preferences. You should be careful what you say cause you can hurt other people.

I feel piano is a nice place to start, but yeah it does get pretty boring once you've been playing for more than a year.

If you’re a three-piece band Royal Blood got your back because now your guitar is Consolo while the bass player actually holds down the fort appropriately and probably one of the best ways possible! Because they invented a way to do that. In fact they ARE that just as a whole!!!!
They didn't invent anything, it's been done. Maybe not just bass and drums, but they didn't invent a two piece rock band or the amp switch...
@@Killguy- well I mean I know there’s two piece bands like the black keys that also exists too. I’m guessing a similar thing I’ve been done with metal for songs. Cause Queen is a kickass band with very talented musicians
Its not a very unique sound.
they are young in a good way, everything is copied, they are doing a jigsaw their way but the picture is the same, kinda white stripes muse qotsa vibe, zepp undertows, they are tight the tone is good and capable of writing catchy hooks and riffs, all the right mix, but true not unique by any means, they wont be the last im sure :)
But they are still distinct

Mike Kerr plays the bass like a guitar...here's a thought?? Why don't you just play the guitar? You're no bassist Kerr, try playing those riffs with a real band and see how fast you get shown the door.
You can't have that real low end with a guitar, and funnily enough, you can't have that thick heavy distorted fake guitar sound created on the bass on a guitar either. He's already said in the other video, he wants to do things wrong. That itself I think answers your question quite a lot.
