Observing the current catalog of catastrophe immediately tells me that ones desire to be "of public service" shouldn't automatically qualify ones consideration.
      You should treat it as jury duty and be recompensed accordingly. Worth a thought BBB?

    I'm 73 years old and unfortunately lived through it all before. Tax and NI rises, alignment to the unions, inflationary wage rises, more strikes, wasting billions abroad, illegal immigration unchecked, damage to and failure to grow the economy, lack of investment, etc. were all unfortunately predictable. The difference this time is the alarming rate at which it's all happening.

      If you fighting statement because he does it but fail to notice that they virtually all do it, Labour, Tory, libdem, reform.... Who ever then we will continue this for another hundred years.
      I suggested that if you think it's " the other party" that does it you haven't yet even seen the problem let alone in a position to improve it.
      Imho pr voting would help, it has a better chance of forcing cooperation, cooperation involved honesty and persisting reduces the chance of whom ever is in power of hiding things till their or of power as their less likely to be the only ones who can see the books.
      Far from tolerate it I was to to rip out first part the post which works best with two pairs to a system that works for multiple parties and stops a party being able to get millions of votes and no MP's but that's slightly wider than the OP mentioned

Imagine, for example, how many women who were previously not working would get a new job only to 'suddenly' discover that they were pregnant and would claim paid Maternity Leave, plus Paternity Leave for their partners ... ?

      @ Already happened, a few years ago a woman took on employment which involved some heavy lifting but didn’t reveal that she was pregnant until she turned up for work and since she couldn’t in fact do the job her employer dismissed her, believe it or not she won an unfair dismissal tribunal and her employer, a small business had to cough up £10,000 despite her having a record as a grifter, luckily when this became public several people sent money to the business owner to help pay it since it was so obviously unfair.
      They exist!

      It was for a temporary job at a caravan sales pitch to cover (wait for it) a staff member who went on maternity leave.
      She was given that job and she immediately said, "I'm pregnant". The owner stated she couldn't move caravans whilst pregnant and dismissed her.
      It very nearly broke that small business.

      A verbal question in the HOC will trigger a mini speech which rarely answers the question. But a written question will normally be answered in full and published in Hansard.

      A few years ago, although it was a devolved government, here in Northern Ireland actually ran fairly well without any real political interference as such. They didn't sit in the house and the country ticked along as usual. Of course it wasn't perfect, but it certainly didn't get any worse or better, but it was a pleasure not to hear from any of our politicians every day especially on TV etc, spouting lies. ​@@sirloin8745

    Democracy is utterly broken. I hate it when people say "well, you can vote for someone else next general election" when refering to accountability - but that's utter absurdity. When ministers are refuse to answer questions they should have the answers to, there is no real accountability. Booting a government out after 5 years is not accountability. But they're all the same. And on and on it goes.

      Same thing happens here in Canada with Trudeau and his cabinet minions not answering questions. I suggested in a commentary on a site here that this portion of questioning the ruling party ought to be handled by AI with the AI saying that the government member did not answer the question. Then the said member would be give one more chance to give a proper answer. If not then two robots emerge and lift the member by the collar and usher him/her out of the house. I got a lot of replies in favour of this suggestion.

    In the case of Angela Rainer, the fact that she failed to mention any company that agreed with the government employment policies proves that she was lying. In Starmer's case, regarding what he knew about Louise Haigh, he didn't want to answer because he knew that his judgement in appointing her as a minister, would be put into question.

      No one in parliament is going to support such changes as all politicians are guilty of this unresponsive behaviour. It's not limited to the present Labour government. It's a general problem amongst politicians, and as they are the ones that make the rules they'll want to continue the status quo.
