  • I took a trip across Bolivia with BoA (Boliviana de Aviación) to try out their little known Boeing 767 and Boeing 737-300, in both business class and economy class. My trip took me to Cochabamba, Santa Cruz de la Sierra (Viru Viru) and onwards to Buenos Aires.

      used to be standard on Continental's 767-200's as well. The middle seats were quite popular with solo travelers.Qantas' 767-300's were 1-2-2 as well, and Piedmont also had 2-1-2 on their 767-200's when they first got them, so it wasn't uncommon. if you have noticed - when you give flight altitude numbers you always have higher altitudes on the second half of the flight. On heavy, fully loaded longhaul flights, the plane simply does not have sufficient engine power to climb very high, and only after having burned off some tons of fuel can it climb further. It's calle step climb.

    Entertaining report! Brought back memories of scrum boarding on flights in Bolivia when there were no computer-generated boarding passes. Passengers massed at the gates and rushed for the aircraft. Very amusing at La Paz airport: altitude 13,000 feet. Everybody was gasping for breath by the time we got to the aircraft stairs. Congratulations on 100,000 subscribers!

    • @noelphilips
      @noelphilips  4 роки тому +2

      Haha that's amazing, yes it was definitely like that! Didn't really notice the effects at CCB but I guess it's "only" 8500ft up. I'm in Nepal in January where it will be much higher - lets see how that goes!

  • @jasontempest4233
    @jasontempest4233 4 роки тому +75

    This kind of reminded me of the time I flew Air Niugini. They really do try so hard.
    BTW, Bolivia is one of the most underrated and beautiful countries on earth. It's a photographers paradise. And physically La Paz is one of those breathtaking world cities not unlike Cape Town, Hong Kong, Sydney or Rio de Janeiro. La Paz can best be described as Rio in the sky or if you put a city inside the Grand Canyon.
    Bolivia is simply amazing and has it's own uniqueness on show. Stay for a while and become acclimatized, it's inexpensive and the people are very friendly. By acclimatizing to the altitude you'll experience a much easier time in the stunning Andes.

      I've been to Bolivia and I enjoyed it. But that being said, acclimatisation isn't easy for everyone. I had altitude sickness for only 1 day, while my parents suffered altitude sickness for the entire 2 weeks we were at high altitude (even though we went no higher than 4150 metres, which was at El Alto), and they needed to be hospitalised.

    Cool. Many years ago I did a tour around Bolivia, and passed through both Cochabamba and Santa Cruz. At that time, the planes were all 20+ year-old 727s - but equally sketchy. Love to see that Cochabamba has a new terminal since I was there. And they finished the one in Santa Cruz. And the vast majority of Bolivian people are super friendly.

    Noel...
    I must tell you, your first flight brought back memories...sorry really epic ones! You see I was the Area Manager for Alitalia in San Francisco 1998-2002 and we operated THAT aircraft from MXP-SFO nonstop...all 11.5 to 12.5 hours of it. The seats you sat in were the very ones we used on that route, although we had 30 of them and 174 seats in Economy.
    When we had them, they were pretty much new out of the Boeing factory in Everett. Lie flat seats were just being introduced in 1996-97 by BA and others; AZ did not update until well after 2003. I flew on that very aircraft a number of times between SFO and MXP, without WiFi, without individual entertainment...but our flights did very well and it is only this next summer when AZ will start service again to SFO, this time from FCO.
    Ah the memories...
