"QUEEN OF THE NIGHT" (DIE ZAUBERFLOTE) EDDA MOSER, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (HD)

- German soprano Edda Moser is known for her crystal clear vocals and wonderful diction. Her most noted performances include Das Rheingold, Don Giavanni, Turandot and The Magic Flute. The Magic Flute was written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and it premiered in 1791. The most famous aria from the opera is “Queen Of The Night”. There have been numerous recordings of this aria by a variety of opera’s best. I personally think that Edda Moser’s interpretation is one of the best ones out there. I love the way she attacks the song with such vigor and to be frank, sings the hell out of it! I think she owns this one. Enjoy!
Check out her Wikipedia article. She was called to a recording of the Zauberflöte with a full german-speaking ensemble. When arriving in Munich, however, she was told by the producer that Mrs. Sawallisch (the conductors wife) did not fancy her for this role. She - rightfully - asked why the conductors wife has any say in this matter and insisted on her contract being fullfilled. With this mood she went into the recording and allegedly did it in one take. The rest is history.
I'd never read this....but if being pissed of brought such great results, then good on his wife!!
One of the best versions ever...not only the perfect rendition of the character, full of anger, but also really accurate high notes and PERFECT intonation and diction! Really amazing
Being the others...? (I can't think of anything similar to Moser's, an authentic dramatic soprano, rendition)
My favourite Queen of the Night!
She is THE best Queen of the Night
Clear and sharp, strong and precise - the best Königin der Nacht
If I'm not mistaken, this is the performance that was broadcast by Carl Sagan's team, into outer space, and will continue travelling over billions of miles in the hopes of eventually reaching other species, long after we're gone. It's a long shot, but not impossible. This is probably a good choice to represent the height of human aural achievement.
If this is the choice however to show to the extraterrestrials, how peaceful human nature is, then it turns out to be a terrible choice. Music and interpretation though are both at the peak of humanly possible.
Yeah... 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Yes, this recording travels across the Universe at Voyager 1 or 2. I'm not sure which one.
Agree! I think the ETs will understand the context. (Of course, they could've done the obvious & sent right over to our outermost planet; quick trip. That's right, the one NASA acknowledged a few years ago. And yes, there are folks living there; have been since before we existed. And we've known that for quite a while.)
Gosh, she's really furious!
The best queen of the night in the world..., pure dramatic coloratura ever 😉
The most perfect thing about moser is the power she has beginning the song! Bravo!
The difference between lyric coloraturas and dramatic coloraturas is evident here. Edda is amazing!
This is the PERFECT version of queen of the night
I have been looking for a rendition that does her anger justice. Finally a performer that captures the rage she is supposed to be conveying. I look forward to hearing more of her.
i think natalie dessay did a phenomenol performance too in this respect
IMHO for me, beisides Edda Moser also Rita Shane (wonderful). Ms Edda and Ms. Shane are incredible
@@hetedeleambacht6608 Agreed, but within her characteristics and abilities. While her effort is commendable, just like that of Damrau, Pop, and many others, it cannot be compared to Edda Moser's. Edda is a true dramatic soprano with a heavier voice and yet as agile and free in the high notes as the lighter voices. She’s in a different league.
BEST version (by far)
Hits every note.
Her interpretation of the famous revenge aria is now sailing through space on board the "Voyager 2 & 1" space capsules. No other singer has made it as high as Edda Moser: her interpretation of the revenge aria from Mozart's Queen of the Night has been flying on board two space probes into the vastness of interstellar space for 45 years. With the hope that beings from another civilization might hear her?
One of my favorites ❤ and so beautiful.
Absolutely beautiful and perfect
Superb beats Diana Damrau's classic benchmark
What benchmark is Damrau, FGS, stop boosting this anti-music misunderstanding!
Marvelous music, outstanding performance, and she is so pretty!
Excellence!
Brilliant! #1 all the way! She attacks this like a true Wagnerian! Perfection! Only equaled by Lucia Popp! (but not bettered)
You can't even compare. Lucia Popp, while being a great soprano, was a lirico-leggero and, as such, was expected to be agile and have no trouble reaching the high notes. The point is that Edda Moser is exactly what this role requires: a dramatic soprano with a heavier, more metallic voice and yet as agile and precise in the high notes as a leggero. She’s in a different league-almost a league of her own, with Deutekom being the only one who comes close.
Tremendous und unübertroffen.
This should’ve be see in live to get better feeling and experience but can’t see in live anymore…😢
Thank you
Богиня❤
her and diana are amazing
She is amazing. Diana is not, at least in this role. Aside from personal tastes, Damrau is a soprano leggero, naturally agile and able to easily reach the high notes, but the role is written for a dramatic soprano, a heavier and thicker voice like Edda's. Such voices are extremely rare, so usually, in theaters, the role is taken by a young leggero. However, when a true dramatic soprano with the agility and range required for the role appears, it's on another level. You can't even compare. In the last 50 years, only two singers have had the natural ability (on top of their technical skills, of course) to sing the Königin role as it should be. One was Moser, and the other was Deutekom. Comparisons can only be made between them. The others play in a different, inferior league.

I agree with Jeffrey A and @tancredispitale2252. I just reviewed 8 or 10 of the best and she comes closest to perfection of this challenging composition, to this layman's ears. Edda Moser carries the day!

Damn, I thought Diana Damrau was THE Queen of the Night...
She was not. When there's no loin, you eat anything. Moser is loin-the best quality loin.
A perfect performance dramatically, but alas Moser fails to articulate the sixteenth note rolls properly. Instead she opts for what is essentially a trilled or heavily vibratoed single note which is just not what is in the score.
Wow, a real tough crowd out there Tadpole!
@@FlyBoyMT Can you describe this a bit more? I'm a bit of an amateur when it comes to formal music terminology and I listened to the Diana Damru version but didn't hear the difference I think you're describing
Imagine nitpicking a phenomenal performance just so one can feel superior in one’s kNoWleDgE oF ThE sCoRe 🙄 without using the correct terminology for the ornaments one is talking about. Yawn.
a cool technical note, but a big T-bone steak versus the perfect filet mignon of Damrau. Untrained listener here.
@@DCUPtoejuice Diana Damru's high notes are very squeaky in comaprison to Edda Moser's, also Damru doesn't have any emotion in her singing. She certainly acts, but her voice doesn't reflect that, while Edda Moser's does
1. Deutekom
2. Moser
3. Damrau
Have you seen any videos of Suzanne Elmark in the role? There's a video of her doing it in Dutch here on UA-cam somewhere. Her acting the role rivals Damrau and Moser.
@@catnash Not Deutekom NO WAY Deutekom is beaten
Agreed plus the way Christina’s vein in her forehead pops at the top of the aria 😅🎉
I think the Rae woodland version is better than Damru. She had true bel canto technique and that's reflected in the quality of her singing
1. Moser
2. Miklosa
3. Damrau (stunning dramatization of the Queen but not as vocally adept for the role as the aforementioned two).
