Touareg 3.6 VR6 vs Enclosed Trailer.

- We put the Touareg (aka TowRig) to the test and see how it makes out vs a 26ft enclosed trailer. Although we expected it to be struggle for the old girl, we're not outside the means of the trailer, or the Touaregs towing capacity. The real question is, are we racing yet?

I’m from N.S and I live vws this was a good find
👍
I tow my 22 foot V-nose trailer with a V8 Touareg and it tows great. The only thing I caution you on is to watch the tongue weight. I have to load my 1900 lb Mk2 race car in backwards and very close to the rear door. I also keep two spare trailer tires all the way in the back. By the time you add tools, spare race tires, parts, generator, the weight at the front of the trailer goes up quite a bit. I overloaded my rear tires and the plies were separating even though I had set up my load distribution bars to have the Touareg level. What I thought was about 750 lbs on the tongue, was actually about 1000 lbs.
Do you have weight distribution bars?
@@COMotorsports Yes.
@@VWRalf Edit: Sorry I had missed half of your original message. Did you actually weigh the tongue weight?
@@COMotorsports Even when I had too much tongue weight, the Touareg was level. After my trip where my tires were coming apart, I got a scale to weigh the tongue and then found that I was about 300 lbs too high.
@@VWRalf Appreciate the info. We'll check with a scale. It was on the to do list, but we just decided to go for it.
Does the Touareg have a trailer brake controller? It would be nice to use the trailer brakes....
That’s on the “winter to do” list
im going ti tow a 2600lb race car and 1600lb trailer, i'm assuming the 3.6 should be ok? i prefer gas engine because the TDI could potentially have lower reliability.
We towed more than that in this video n
I live in the UK and all the v6 touaregs over here are 3.0 so what's with the 3.6 vr6?
Pretty standard here.
Hahaha I towed a 21ft car hauler with my Vr6 cayenne... handled it like a champ... wish I had boost😉😉😏 ps. I'm Canada😏
Please do an update with the trailer packed down. I also own a 3.6 touareg and wanted to know if towing around 6-7k was really possible on the vr6. Can you also let us know the mpg of the trip?
Wouldn't recommend it. The power isn't the problem really. It's the trans that will hate life. Short trips with light load not a big deal. We've used the Touareg with an open trailer, car and all our gear for years. But the closed trailer, car and all our gear adds up....adds up more now because we have more space to put more stuff as well. Lol. We did the math last week while towing it with a truck. We're at like 7500-8000lbs probably which is the limit of the Touareg towing capacity.
@@COMotorsports 7700 on the oem hitch, but you do bring up a good point about the transmission. I personally tow my Hondas with it to the track but never done any extensive trip. If you guys dare to try a long trip i'd love to see that otherwise ill explore that on my own. Thanks for getting back to me!
@@andrewyarusinsky6998 well the towing weight is 7700lbs, the tongue weight on the hitch is only 770lbs. That's also part of the problem. We towed with this for years with an open trailer and all our gear. The tracks we run at are up to 4 hrs away. The only issue we had were steady bearings. However this specific trailer is to much in reality with all our gear and a car for where we need to travel to with the Touareg.
@@andrewyarusinsky6998 I frequently tow a 5500lb camper, with gear with our 2016 3.6 vr6. in the mountains it feels a bit underpowered sometimes, but never has an issue. we dragged that camper on a 1000+ mile round trip to Yellowstone national park with 0 issues (except for the blower motor deciding to leave the chat on an 80 degree day)
@@forbes80751 how long is your 5500lb trailer? Do you use a weight distribution hitch? I am looking at a 25ft Airstream International and am on the cusp of believing I can tow it with my ‘14 Touareg VR6 w/ factory tow package. No air suspension.
I thought a weight distribution hitch was a no no on our Touareg's.
IDK 🤔
We’ve read plenty of mixed opinions on this. Lots of people run them with no issue. We’ll keep a close eye on things to make sure things stay safe.
Ok, I'll ask the question everyone's been wondering but not asking: What's the deal with the super sweet Grand Am that makes a cameo in a lot of your videos?
Lol we bagged it.
You guys need a vinyl eraser wheel, that would have been 5 minutes of work :D
have one... it went pretty easy all in all. Would have been more effort running the air line. :)
I have a 27 foot 5400 lb travel trailer. I want an suv that can tow it. Do you gentleman think I will be okay? Mostly highway traveling.
PS I have weight distribution hitch
Touareg tdi
VW and engine light are two peas in a pod.
I think it comes standard on this one.
Guess my 2004 GTI was broken...in the 15 years I had it, I only saw the light twice...one for failed t-stat (not getting up to temp), and misfire due to failed coil/spark plug. VW, and especially 'egg owners have to be proactive and not reactive to mx items
seeing this makes me wonder if the atlas can tow that trailer hmmmm
I believe the Atlas has quite a bit lower towing capacity.
Tow rating on the Atlas is only 5000
