Your industry is consistently amazing, Alex. This video represents easily a week's work, spread over more than a month, I figure, and time well spent. I have many happy memories of Westphalias of yore on the beach, and you breathed new life into this one.

The veneer could probably use a "drink" of orange oil. It would soften brittle, dry veneer; making it last another 50-60 years, and give it a wonderful orange scent.
I really appreciate how you try to restore items to as close as original condition as possible. Thank you for taking us along on your rescues of old things!

@@CuriosityIncorporated I liked to store my camp stove in the spare tire area. The thing you called a spare door in the beginning of the video is supposed to be the door to that area. There is a missing metal tang on the top, and a screw with a plastic knob goes through the top of the door to hold it on.

Oh, Alex, this brings back such memories! In 1986 we had been living in the Philippines for four years and were going home to the US with our four children (2 1/2-16). We went through Europe, renting a van just like this in Amsterdam. At one point we picked up a friend which made us SEVEN. We made a huge circle through Germany, down to Switzerland, across to Paris (parked UNDER the Eiffel Tower, now long banned), and then up through Belgium back to Amsterdam. Two weeks of incredible adventures--and never ate once in a restaurant. It was pretty crowded, but our Westfalia was an economical way for us to travel. Thanks for bringing back these memories.

There was a particular place in London near one of the bridges where these camper vans were bought and sold by Australians ‘doing’ Europe The stories those vans could tell I often wondered if some of the vans had a deep sigh as they turned south to the continent with a ‘here we go again’

@Lynne de Lacey. I think the Van's were near the Australian Embassy and the various state offices in the Strand as I worked there back in the early 1970s. Incidentally last week I saw one all done up with flowers and ribbons inside and used as a wedding car, looked really sweet.

My grandma’s Volkswagen’s , yes plural she only drove VW vans as long as I can remember, kept breaking down but they never lost their value very much. She was always looking for a Volkswagen repair shop along the route of any trip just in case. I have so many memories of being a kid and traveling around in her van. She’d toss all of us in the back and drop us off at the beach or we’d get a trip all the way to San Francisco from Vancouver. When I see a van I wonder was that one of hers?

Slow Moving Buses: Ten years ago, my daughter flew in for a visit to our area about 2 hours outside of Seattle and asked us to drive down to pick up a 60s Camper Bus from Medford Oregon and follow her, as she drove it back to our place to start the project. Her mom drove with her, while I drove the chase vehicle. I use the term “chase” loosely.
As she climbed the low mountain range between Oregon and Washington, she called me on the cell to proudly tell me the old bus was still doing 55 up the incline. Sadly, I had to tell her the bus wasn’t really going that fast, because the previous owner had the wrong size tires on, which causes an error on the old bus speedometer. So when you showed the decals on the bus in the video, I had to laugh about the old buses being slow to go up hill.

How fun! Such a huge difference. It brought back memories for me when I was 14 I went with my parents on a 5 week tour of Europe. My father (who was old enough to be my grandfather) was stationed in Belguim during WWII as head of the vehicle parts. So we went back to see what he saw when he was there, and met some people he lived with. He stayed in a couple's home. BUT why this reminds me of that trip is that we did the entire thing in one of these campers. I slept up on top, in the pop up...and it was in the fall. They took me out of school. We went to so many countries, but I do remember in Paris France I heard my Dad swear the one and only time as he got trapped going around the ARC de Triumph again and again as no fast little cars would let him out LOL. Finally, of course we made it out safely. Then in Germany it got so cold during the night when I went to put on my jeans in the morning...my only thing I ever wore...they unfolded stiff like an accordian....they were frozen shut. My parents slept below on the fold out bed and seemed very comfortable for them. We cooked our meals inside, most anyway - sometimes we just had to eat at a fancy place of course. But it was an adventure, and glad we did it. I remember all the pretty campgrounds, the other campers I made friends with - for a short time and then of course all the sights. I do remember the camper van was quite popular with the other campers who always wanted to take a look. My father bought one later...after my mom passed away, a very nice deluxe one about when I got married and left home. One day my brothers girlfriend admired it, asked if he would sell it and he said sure, I guess I don't need it! Sold it for only $3,000 which was a steal for it and I was a little devastated. I mean, we (my husband, young daughter and I) would have loved to have bought it if we knew he was going to sell it. I remember it was white with a white, brown & grey plaid interior. It ran perfectly...a newer one than the one we had in Europe of course. Thanks for showing the fix up. Sweet ride.

There was and/or is a VW shop in Vegas that had maybe cars behind their shop. They were mostly customer cars that didn't want to do the work and they were abandoned. When they sold one I would do the paperwork to get them a title. They had everything from buses, of all generations to Karmann Ghias.
The story went that when the Greatful Deal would play in town buses full of people would try to get there from the LA area and inevitably the bus would break down going up the hill in the desert. It would be towed to this shop and they wouldn't have the money to fix it, so it sat. That happened over and over for years.

This brings back memories. We had a VW bus back in the late '60's. Oh how I wish I had that vehicle now!!! Top speed was about 45 mph. We were coming home late one night. My sister and I each got our own bench seat. We were sleeping and woke up to my mom screaming and my dad slamming on the brakes. Of course my sister and I both rolled to the floor! Here was a herd of black beef cattle standing in the middle of the highway. One of the cows happened to turn it's head and the headlights picked up her eyes. So glad the top speed was only 45 mph!!!

I am thinking a pecan stain would have been the better match, but what you picked is close enough to look good. Love seeing this bus come back to life.

We had a couple of VW campers when my son was young. Spent a lot of summer vacations in Algonquin Park. Loved the louvered windows in our older one when it was raining. My husband tried to park it between 2 trees once and it didn't quite work. A couple of months later there was a cartoon drawing in the newspaper of the same thing. I'd like to think they got inspired by us. Wishing you and the family many happy memories and funny stories..😁🇨🇦

Awesome! MANY years ago my father in law had a volkeswagon van.He took me to Vermont from central New York for a wedding while I slept all the way, in the back. I had to work the night before. I've had vans now for years.

These vehicles bring back a lot of memories from my childhood. We didn’t have a Westfalia but did have another style with bench seats. Of course, the one we had should have had those window decals because it was SLOW on hills….and generally everywhere else too.

Gday from Australia. If you want a surprise have a look at the prices these things are pulling down here in Oz. They're astronomical!

I'm an automotive painter, IF the primer isn't urethane based, you might be able to use lacquer thinner to remove the primer, if not then you can get colour matched paint in a spray can from autobody supply companies.
