Nah man, Harold Ballard is still in a league of his own. Melnyk should be embarassed to even be mentioned in the same breath as Ballard. The man has no shame though.
In the 1920's and 1930's there was Bill Dwyer. He owned the NY Americans and was part owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates (the NHL team that lasted from 1925-1926 through 1929-1930 and moved to Philadelphia for the 1930-1931 season becoming the Philadelphia Quakers). He was literally a bootlegger during Prohibition. He used profits to become a sports owner. Too bad Prohibition ended.
@Dagger Valley No he didn't, that was Conn Smythe. Ballard only joined the Leafs in the 1940s running the Marlies and became part owner in 1961. The Gardens were built in the early 1930s. He became full owner when Conn Smythe's so died and he bought out the other owners in 1972.

I know Eugene or as I call him, Genie. We go way back. I've hung out with him in Barbados on several occasions. Nice guy, he even let me sleep on his bathroom floor once. I wasn't allowed a blanket or pillow, but ol' Genie's one of a kind! I asked him about not wearing a new Adidas jersey from that Borocop interview and he said that he was wearing a new Adidas jersey! And I believe him, he ain't a liar! Greatest man I've met in my life, top 300 at least!

As a teacher I like to put things in perspective... If you have a billion dollars (1 000 000 000) and owe somebody 13 000 = that's like having 10 000 dollars, then not being willing to pay 13 cents. Most people don't really grasp just how much a billion is. Another example: it would take you about 11.5 days (if you count one per second, and don't sleep) to count to a million - and close to 38 YEARS to count to a billion.

Gene the machine is the cheapest owner in the NHL and definitely top 3 in the big 4 sports leagues but no one is cheaper then Paul Brown’s kids and grandkids that own and run the Bengals.
When Harold Ballard and Bill Wirtz passed away, it was a turnaround for the Leafs and Hawks. RIP Mr Melnyk.
The other big one that was not mentioned was the former executive, Peter O'Leary, suing the team and mentioning Melnyk's abusive attitude towards his staff.

Mayor of Ottawa called him an Idiot on TV when Melnyk screwed the new arena deal up.
The problem is Melnyk has always said he will never sell the team. I remember in a PR video, the reporter kept asking if he would sell, but again he said no and wants to hand it down to his daughters. Our only chance here in Ottawa is to lauch a class action lawsuit against him for "unparalleled levels of failure", that would chase this deadbeat out of town!
We can NEVER allow the Sens to be relocated or folded. I would literally do the most craziest insane shit to protest.

@Mr. Man You get more money from selling to someone who will relocate than if you sell it to someone who will keep the team here, so take it as you will.
When Melnyk took over the organization, I was warned by someone who worked for his pharmaceutical company and who was a good friend of his wife that he was a very difficult person to get along with and had impossible expectations from his employees. Often times, these expectations boil over into a toxic atmosphere... which might explain the Karlsson/Hoffman ordeal.
I support all Canadian teams and constantly wish them success but this guy is making it really hard for me not to hate the Ottawa senators. I know it’s not the hockey teams fault but still his names attached to them

There was a time when Eugene Melnyk was revered in Ottawa. Then, a few years ago, the bizarre stories started coming out. Either something in his character changed, or he was always a jerk and we didn't know.

Eugene dying, we agree is sad. However, Sens need diversified ownership now. This would lead to affording to at least come half way to the cap. Also, Ottawa will allow a new rink… but not if he was involved.
