"3 Engines?! Holy Smokes!" NYS&W Utica NY Branch

  • This past weekend, CSX dropped another engine off for NYS&W's Utica NY branch, namely CSX No. 4423. This engine joins NYS&W No. 3040 & CSX 2514 for Utica branch duties.
    I believe 4423 was dropped off because 2514 is up for an inspection. Except in the spring, one engine is usually enough to handle the workload here. However, agricultural traffic spikes each spring to customers in Waterville and Sangerfield, over 20 miles south of Utica. A second engine is needed to assist 3040 move increased tonnage up Paris Hill's long 1.8% grade.
    The video opens in South Utica just south of Genesee Street as the southbound freight rolls by.
    Next, a few hours later, the train is seen northbound (returning from Sangerfield with 7 empties) passing through Clayville, South Utica then down Schuyler Street.
    As always, Witold's assistance in making this video is gratefully acknowledged!

    Being from the west coast, all we see out here are the big class ones like BNSF & UP. I've always been fascinated by the much smaller class two and three lines. I looked this one up as I have never heard of it. They've got 400 miles +/- worth of track. I guess these smaller more regional lines are more of an east coast thing. From a business perspective, they obviously have to have enough customers to keep themselves profitable. It's pretty cool that even with the major class ones these days and in the last few decades gobbling up smaller lines, there are still some regional lines that are still making a go of it. UP, BNSF, CSX, and NS are all like the Amazon of freight lines and I think it's great that not everyone has been sucked up by one of the big four.

    The only street running we had in Saint John was a siding that ran from Simm's corner to a Hardware store where lumber cars were delivered by CP years ago. street running is so cool. thank you.

    Your gasoline is $0.06 more than ours in Milwaukee. We have a fair number of Speedways here they used to be called SuperAmerica. Once again Bitold does his best at imitating a statue. Is there someplace that uses plastic pellets as that is what the ELTX should be carrying. The telephoto shot on the elongated curves turned out real nice and your shadowing the train reminds me of doing that on the SOO Line Ex MILW ROAD Goose Island track in Chicago a it also help to cross a busy Street. Of course how do you explain a coupler in your radiator if they make a sudden stop? Too bad about the asphalt part of it due to the time and expense of heating it to make it drain from the car. Perhaps Bitold could get some inspiration from the graffiti found on the third covered hopper on the return trip. Nice 🎥

      Good eye re ELTX; yes, Fountain Head Group, a customer on Utica-area industrial tracks, uses plastic pellets, They must've taken the empty to Sangerfield and back instead of taking the time to drop it on a run-around (saves a move). A friend told me a story about a truck getting "knuckled" at the brewery years ago, lol.

    Greetings from Tonawanda NY! Looks like it’s getting spring like. (Or a remarkable simulation thereof )
    It looks like CSX4414 has been lobotomized (unable to go past throttle position 4).

    Great video from Okeechobee Florida. Is that an old siding remnant just past the New Hartford station?

    • @railroadingrambler218
      @railroadingrambler218  Рік тому +2

      Yes, an old team track last used for a customer in 2006 when an SP boxcar containing lumber was spotted there for Jay K Lumber Co. The siding is used occasionally to store MOW equipment.

    What frequencies can you listen to the traffic on the railroad radio? I picked up a multiband FM/AM/SW/air/LW and I haven't figured out what else.

    • @railroadingrambler218
      @railroadingrambler218  Рік тому +2

      Check out the description for the scoop on that question (I believe the third engine prob was taken along just to "kick the tires", so to speak, as it was just delivered by CSX.

      If the cops did that,just on Schuyler st, it would literally take all day!!! All the side sts have stop each side because a school is 2-3 blocks up and most of the kids walk
