- Each spring rail traffic to the big mills in Sangerfield & Waterville NY spikes. The railroad carries farm supplies, primarily fertilizer (probably feed and seed too I'd imagine), helping farmers' bottom lines as rail transport is cheaper than trucking.
This video, made on April 8, 2024, catches the big train (for the Utica branch this way), as it heads through Clayville, Paris Station and on its arrival in Sangerfield. Coming back to Utica after finishing switching in "SANG", scenes captured include Nos. 3040 & 2722 running light through Greens Crossing, Paris, picking up three empty boxcars off a spur once back in Utica, then on Utica's Schuyler Street nearing the Susquehanna's Utica Yard.
Final scenes capture a bit of the solar eclipse during its peak here in Utica, approximately 50 miles south of the beginnings of the zone of total darkness. It was more like dusk here. Witold took it all in as can be seen!
What does the sign beside the American Legion say? BTW, Thanks for the video. Some of my favorite things. Trains in rural areas.
Sad but interesting mention of the family whose car was hit by the passenger train. According to RR, it happened at the end of the Great Depression and on the cusp of WW2. Don't know for sure but the bridge that resulted from the tragedy has probably saved some lives since its completion. RIP to the five family members.

I wonder if any of the houses in Railroad Street, Clayville NY are for sale. The view using my Google street view is amazing.

Does Cortland New York still have there switching tower ??
I believe the Cortland tower is still there. Norwich also has a tower.

11:48 yes tell us about the disconnected track between you and the tower.
It was called the “Blue Line” purportedly because it ran along the southerly boundary of the old Erie Canal, which was denoted in blue on old survey maps. It ran a few miles or so to Yorkville, last serving a bakery I believe. The tracks were pulled about 1990 or so. I recall once getting a call from a friend who worked for the railroad advising that a boxcar derailed on the old tracks seen in the video. I went over to observe. It was a bitterly cold winter night. I recall flares being set out and watching the boxcar being nudged back onto the tracks with the help of wooden blocks.
It became amazingly dark in Remsen. I heard the passenger train but didnt see it

Great video! Is there any organization that does maintenance and upkeep on the tower?
The tower is still owned by the railroad although the Utica & Mohawk Valley Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society has been allowed to perform maintenance. A major project is planned by this organization to make repairs to this railroad landmark.

Hi I enjoyed this video very much, its a beautiful part of New York state. I watch the trains on the road running area quite alot always a treat & sometimes cars will get in the way of the train that's interesting! Great filming. 😊👍
Hey rail rambler I watched solor eclipse also. Great to see UT 1 running. The crossing where car was hit was the road by yellow house in Sangerfeild. The original road that winds and curves and comes out by gas station. What is in tankcars?

Always love your Utica Branch videos. I got to see a total eclipse this past Monday where I live in Beavercreek Ohio (Dayton Ohio area). My German Shepherd and 2 cats had reaction at all. Keep the great videos coming !

What are the tracks that seem to have diverged from the Schuyler Street tracks at the tower? At one time did Mohawk, Adirondack & Northern service the area now covered by NYSW ?
That long-abandoned spur was called the Blue Line. For more info on the BL, see my answer to a commenter above. No, the MA&N never had ownership of the Utica branch. Before NYS&W acquired the line in 1982, the chain of owners (earliest to latest): Delaware, Lackawanna & Western, Erie-Lackawanna and then Conrail.
The reason I asked about MA&N, I remember seeing a MA&N Alco near ConMed many years ago. Perhaps it was another Loaner Engine.

The previous owner of the feed mill on the north side of route 20 hosted a customer appreciation day some 20 plus years ago. Along with actives for the kids they were also giving rides in a Budd car. We board in area you were filming from. The ride took us south several miles before returning.

Thanks for video, watching from Sunny North Carolina. I like how the track with connection plate at about 6:20 at Paris Station can be seen bowing under weight of train.
