Toby Mathis with Anderson Business Advisors sharing my wisdom on on non-profits. This is a topic that's near and dear to my heart.
I have a personal philosophy that basically states that if you're good at making money, you should be very generous and make sure that you're taking care of those who can't.
I get this from something called The Gospel of Wealth that was written by Andrew Carnegie more than a hundred years ago, Where he basically stated that millionaires were the trustees of the poor.
In other words, not that you just give money away but that you do good works with your money and help those that may be not as fortunate as you or maybe they're not as good at making money as you are.
If you are good at making money, one of the best places to put it, is inside of your own non-profit.
Nonprofit foundations or charitable organizations can also be a great legacy tool to make sure that your kids are taken care of because they always have a place to work.
No better example than Milton Hershey, who in 1905 created the Hershey Trust, which established his charitable intent and manages his various charitable activities.

Mistake
I started a non profit to insure the homeless of California. I had become an health and life insurance agent and felt it was somewhat boring so I decided to turn it into a non profit and go to skid row and sign then all up on medi- cal, food stamps and apply them for rent relief so they can get off the street. It’s the single best thing I have even done.
Unfortunately these days there are many families that cant afford any Health insurance.

Great video! Super helpful! Is an “operating” non-profit filed as a 501c3? Is a “foundation” also a 501c3? If a family foundation has to give away 5% to other non-profits can it have its own indicative aka varying community projects? I am researching starting a foundation but in name only. I’d like to be able to ‘hire salaried” employees and complete community projects under my 501c3. (If possible)

The concept works just about everywhere. If you live in a particular country, you will likely need to create the entity in that jurisdiction if that is where the activity is taking place.
@@TobyMathis for some reason i heard Rolex is owned by a foundation .. And pays no taxes. Someone told me that can obly be done in othet country where they're at not in america. How does rolex have things setup and how can we do this same approach ?

Thanks for the post. To clarify: what if I own a LLC and a non profit. I make a gross annual income of 10000 for the LLC and I decide to donate 60 percent to my 501C3. Am I interpreting this correct? And if so, the benefit would be keeping you from paying taxes from $10,000 but only $4,000, right?

It would be great if you can give an example of a passive way of doing this. Maybe also a simple example anyone can do. Basically is there a way to get started without having to donate a massive amount of capital and time to it? Is there a requirement on the % of funds that a non-profit must use each year? What's the max a person can get paid for managing the non-profit?
