R.I.P. Gil De Ferran, the winner of this race, 2 time CART Champion, and the current all time closed course speed record holder (officially, unofficially it is Mauricio Gugelmin).
"Everyone always asks Why Always Say 'Until We Meet Again' instead of Goodbye. To me, Goodbye Is always so final" Marty Reid Goodbye Gil de Ferran. Thank you for Everything
Life is random and sometimes more mysterious than death itself. I do not understand how Gil could be gone all of a sudden, but I like to think that, as the song goes, only the good die young. So long, Gil. Thank you for this awesome memory. I was in my last year of High School about to graduate when you won this race. You were and always will be one of my favorite drivers. RIP ❤
2:53:01 Respect to the safety crew for how they gently got Dan's car back upright, using that detached tire as a cushion. Very smart. Crowd seemed to appreciate it too.
So Sorry 😢 to hear of the passing of Gil de Ferran 2003 Indianapolis 500 Champion. I always will remember his emotions and roar of joy when he finally won. Truly An Amazing moment for a true champion may he Rest In Peace 🕊️
I remember watching this at 7 years old alone in my parents room, twenty years ago. This is crazy. Was more of a Nascar fan at the time but I was impressed with the speed Edit: 51:15 I wasnt even looking and completely forgot about but this was the coolest thing I ever saw at the time when I rewatched. I rewinded that tape again and again to watch this.
My first 500 and in the paddock. Didn't know how the seating was prior to it. Couldn't see much because of the fence. It was surreal being at something I watched when I was a kid. As the cars flashed by I felt a disconnect to the reality of the race. The cars were cars with no one driving. Lap 200 approached and there was no emotion from the cars they just raced.
As a huge CART fan, I feel like this is the race that really turned my attention towards the IRL. I think any CART race after 2002 was just a shitfest honestly. So IRL races from 2002 to 2007 are worth watching more than CCWS tbh
Oh, gee. The race in which The Captain decided to go way off script and enforce team orders just so Gil de Ferran could win the 500 in his final year of racing, and deny Castroneves his 3rd straight Indy 500. Shame, shame. #TheCurseContinues 😞😞😞😞
Leave it up to an Andretti to declare retirement, soak in the adoration (unearned) and then come out of retirement like 2 years later. Their family is such a joke at Indy.
Coming here today because we lost Gil, never forget him
May He Rest In Peace 🕊️🕊️

Here for Gil 🙏
Just noticed that the final finishing order sadly contains 3 drivers no longer with us: de Ferran, Renna, and Wheldon 😢😢
Watching to remember De Ferren. I went to this race when I was about 16 years old

I'll also add my condolences after gearing of his passing - RIP Gil.
You could say that Gil de Farran was one of the gentle giants of the Indy 500, nothing could be more appropriate, may he rest in peace.

Say hi to Dan for us. RIP Gil 🥺😭

The greatest part of this whole video is Carol Brady in the background during the National Anthem. Mrs Brady is the greatest mother in TV history.
Andretti, Unser and Foyt all racing together!

Having a great voice helps in singing the National Anthem, but giving a heart-felt performance beats it all. This was a great performance. Heroic!
Heroic? He sang a song lol
See you soon, Gil ...
Gil de Ferran, such a great and strong driver!
He certainly earned it.
R.I.P. Gil 🏆🏆🇧🇷
Brazil's golden age in indy 🏎🇧🇷💯
RIP Gil de Ferran, 3:05:47 is a little eerie to hear considering he died of a heart attack
Whoever put November Rain on the Andretti feature gets major props
Gil, Hélio e Tony Brasil na frente.
Hard to believe that Penske never had a 1-2 finish in the Indianapolis 500 prior to this race. Thanks for the UL
2001
No way Helio made the 60 MPH pit speed limit at the start of the pit entrance.

Was this broadcast in 240 resolution??
“Dan Wheldon is a lucky guy”
😬
Is it me or does the flagman always wait too long to wave the green at the start?
As Michael Andretti slows down at Indianapolis
Race starts at 44:28
Wheldon sure showed his aggression late in this race. Sure it cost him in this race, but it paid off 16 other times.
🤙🏎️🏁🇺🇸
2003?
what's that song from 6:58 to 7:14? It's the instrumental to it, I can't remember if it's ELO or something.
That's Gary Numan - Cars
