I used to drive 60 miles each way and pay 60 bucks for one hour, twice a week. Just find 2 or three favorite teachers on UA-cam. Rock musicians never had it this good.
Truth. No one today has any excuse not to be playing at a much higher level because of people like Eric It's for EVERY instrument too, not just guitar. There's just too many good teachers here on youtube to count. Signals music studio, LoG sounds, Chris Sherland, Anyone Can Play Guitar, Guthrie Trapp, Rotem Siven, Jack Ruch, Ben Eunson, Chase Maddox, Brett Papa, Tina Jackel, Gracie Terzian, and of course Rick Beato are just a few of the excellent teachers here on YT. FOR FREE!!!
Eric has always been my number one but I'm really thinking of ditching music school, picking a few teachers and studying them instead.
@@OM10PYE Really? Is music school not what it's cracked up to be? I've been thinking about trying to go back to school and study music for a degree here lately. But it's just so expensive, and I can probably only get into a local community college at first.
@@drewdunn2066 you should go even if it's a local community college it's where you'll find a lot of your early colaborators
@@drewdunn2066 I just don't want to be paying $200,000 for the rest of my life because I wanted to know what C/Emaug7 is 😂 good luck to you
This full mastarclass being free in UA-cam for everyone is the reason I am subscribed to this channel, amazing content, great tones, easy to understand, thank you for sharing!
I agree. And I’ve eaten so much more pizza after having subscribed.
Thank you, I will delve into this Course.
❤ The BJM Anemone solo 👍🏻
Eric you are fast becoming my favorite guitar guru and human being. Always so chill, very informative and entertaining. Thank you
Thanks for showing this. I am self taught and this is how I have always played pentatonics - butthought I was crazy because the "boxes" are almost exclusively demonstrated. This is a great affirming lesson.
Good stuff, and from a Canadian, extra points for your gorgeous looking and sounding Godin.
Stop being so darn pompous - So many amazing guitars are made in the world today that are fantastic, Japan make far greater guitars but no one goes around being so pompous
@@user-xp3jb6ve9whow is he being pompous? Just stop dude. Get outside and stop being miserable
@@user-xp3jb6ve9whi, any recommendations on japanese archtops? ✌️
it feels like one of the great, simple joys of life is getting to hang out while you play and chat guitar, whilst you simultaneously manage to transmit some beautifully simple yet virtuosic knowledge that make our own playing so much better.
One of your best classes yet! Thank you so much. I am a big fan of your work.
Eric is simply humble and awesome
Hello Eric, you and Adrian must be talking and that is awesome both covering the same topic on the same day
from my two fav teachers
You are the benchmark for UA-cam teaching man ❤️
Very high quality tab and practice charts! Worth every penny! Thank you Eric!
This is a terrific lesson, Eric. It has demystified so much for me. Nicely done, sir.
This is so cool, I've only ever really played pentatonics this way and never really understood the notion of a bunch of disconnected boxes....thanks for sharing!!!
Great video as always! Thanks Eric!
I think I found “the guy.” I own two of his courses, but Eric’s UTube channel is awesome. Thank you Eric for being generous with sharing your talent and knowledge
Really pleased to have found such a fun, unassuming teacher! Love how you simplify and demystify this stuff!
Thanks so much Eric! 🙏📢🥁🤯
This is cool. I haven't intentionally learned horizontal patterns, but I started discovering what is basically the same thing through different means. Like you described, I felt constrained by only playing in one boxed pattern. So in my case to fix that I picked my favorite "home base" pattern, memorized an adjacent pattern, and then began exploring specifically how connect the two by chasing melodies in my head. And I've basically ended up in the same place as what you are teaching here. It's just cool to know there are multiple paths to get to the same place. :D
Big thumbs up for the BJM intro. Thanks for the knowledge!
Love this! I saw a similar lesson about a year ago and it has transformed my playing.
As is most often the case, I sat down with guitar to truly absorb this lesson, and I ended up writing a new song with the inspiration from the new knowledge. Thank you Eric.
Thank you Eric! I’ve wanted to learn about these for so long. ✌️😌🎸
Love that Godin. Ridiculously underrated guitars. I have the 5th avenue kingpin. It's an absolute dreamboat.
This is so good, THANK YOU ERIC!
YOU ROCK! 🎸🎶
By far one of the best teachers on YT
Lovely Godin hollow body you've got there! One of their factories is about 30 minutes away from where I live, it's always nice driving by
I love Godin have a few of them never dissapoint.
Thanks for a really great lesson!
Got to love the diagonal!
Really lovely simple lesson that’s HUGE. Always, the neck is a map of new cognitions. And the Godin into the Carr is spicy!
I actually enjoyed this video. A lot of my beginner self taught fall back is my pinky is so weak. Being able to open up more fretboard is awesome and helpful
Thanks for sharing! This is great. Love the 'boxes feel so box-y' bit.
Relating lessons to actual songs is an awesome technique to learning this stuff. Thank you!
This gave me a lot to think about Eric, thanks!
Easily the best UA-cam guitar instruction video I’ve seen.
Calvin and Hobbes is exactly where my brain goes too when I hear the word "transmogrify". Man that was one of the best C&H storylines, read that one over and over as a kid.
Love the Zen attitude. Laid back.
A real music teacher.. Great stuff.
Exactly what this old man trying to learn guitar needed at his level, right now :) Thank You!
Loved it man! So helpful!
Props for choosing that backtrack ❤. Thank you for your great lessons.
Great lesson and awesome Tele
A very groovy pattern that I have always loved
Thank you eric!
Adrian at Anyone Can Play Guitar also did a diagonal pentatonic video this week. I guess if my two most watched guitar teacher channels did the same subject this week, the universe/algorithm is telling me I need to learn this.
I was just having fun absorbing your previous "Sweet Virginia " last few days. Getting my first position major pentatonics solid and that cool bluegrass lick down. Very helpful! Excited to see your latest pop up.
My man! Love your videos and diagonal is my favorite.
Good to hear mystery man, such an underated track from a great album!
Great video man, your tone is always the tastiest 👌.
I played a Godin 5th Avenue belonging to a friend. Played and sounded amazing, and great value.
Channeling your inner Anton.😎
Awesome lesson, and I love that song Anemone
Props for the Brian Jonestown solo in the beginning ❤
Thanks Eric didn't know that scale. Love that telecaster, I just got one too.
A little late to this class, I'm playing catch-up.
I appreciate these videos
Thank you, Eric 🙏🏻
🙏🏻✌️🍕
Thank You...❤❤
That Godin sounds great. I have to build something like that soon.
Thanks amazing
FANTASTIC
Chord tones or the "sweet notes" for the win!
Mr. Ronnie Woods lead on Maggie May would sound killer on that Godin 5th Ave hollow body 😉👍👍
😎✌👍❤🖖
I was hearing Dickie Betts in your Emaj pentatonic. So cool!
That pedal style lick in the background about 3 seconds in... is so Zeppelin. Very cool to bend that 5th up to a 6th to get that sound. I guess Jimmy was showing his Country influences at the time. Thanks~!
Thanks!
Thanks so much!
Cool stuff. Gracias! I just hit subscribe.
No way you just started playing BJM!! one of my biggets influences atm :D
This dude is the Bob Ross of guitar teachers
Righteous.
I think this would apply to blues. I don't understand to much theory, but I do like the idea of getting out of the box. Thanks
The production quality has gone into overdrive!
1:40 e minor pentatonic from the 6th string (modified frying pan)
5:06 e minor pentatonic from the 5th string (modified upside-down frying pan)
8:40 e major pentatonic from the 6th string (upside-down frying pan)
11:46 e major pentatonic from the 5th string (upside-down frying pan)
This is a very cool way to take parts of my favorite pentatonic shape: the frying pan
Wow, that shirt🥰🤘
Mystery Man hell yeah! 🤟
oh man, I used to have a Kingpin. FedEx almost refused to deliver it because they wouldn't read the sign that said come to the side door. Had to chase down the driver's truck because I watched him try to put the last missed delivery slip on my front door. You're making me miss mine lol
Well, they've finally done it, ha ha! Eric and Adrian have released a tutorial on the exact same subject on the same day!!!
Good tone. Speaking of getting out the box check my fretboard mod. 🎸🤘🏽bend any string into vertical scallops
That Godin guitar is calling me. Do I need it? Not really at all. But do I want it? Quite a lot yes.
Hey Eric! Thanks for great vids! I've been following you a long time. Always solid stuff👌. Could you please consider making a song lesson on Rival Sons "Mosaic"? I'm going through a rough time and this song is really helping me out right now. I would like to be able to play and sing it to myself, but I'm not skilled enough to figure it all out by ear. I think this song might be right up your alley, and I haven't found anyone else doing a vid on it. You'd be helpning a brother out. Thanks! Rock on.
Inspiration Information by Shuggie Otis would be amazing for you to teach. Thanks Eric!
Great video eric. I loved revisiting something simple here, with the shapes we all know on the screen. I’ve been gigging lately and this was really refreshing. Especially major for me. It’s funny how you can have brand new realizations with the same old stuff. It’s almost like seeing your wife of 20 years in a brand new dress, you fall in love with her all over again lol. You’re awesome man.
Do you think there’s any Pentatonic or scalier awareness you can have when stuff is moving to the four chord? While, still using the staying out of the box Philosophy?
I'm surprised there probably isn't already a country metal cover band, but it would be fun.
this idea literally changed my noodle playing time
the E minor to major pentatonic phrasing problem phucks me up every time!
Fantastic lesson.
Genio.
You get a Bobcat, I get a Bobcat. I get a Godin, you get a Godin. You've got great taste Eric!
Great minds think alike!
I love and appreciate the Mystery Man Tom Petty intro ❤
Thanks for the lesson. I enjoy your music and your joy of music. When doing the diagonals up or down, do you pretty much always finger the fretboard with fingers 1 and 3, pointer and ring? Or do you sometimes slip in the second finger like when going between the second and third strings? I slowed your video down to closely watch your preferred fingering and had a hard time seeing if you ever throw the second finger in. It seems to make a difference setting you up for the next notes up or down. Thanks for any advice!
Oh yeah - there are definitely times in both the minor and major pentatonic when it makes sense to sneak that middle finger in for a phrase. That darn G to B string transition!
thank you for making the video more interesting with the tom petty thing
Christ I wish I had YT back in the day..Took me years to work this out..Kinda started with the old pan handle frying pan thingy...still use that today.
Awesome lesson Eric! Out of curiosity, why do you choose not to alternate pick when playing single notes?
I only alternate pick when I absolutely need to!
I have so much more control over dynamics with a downstroke (and I almost never play fast)
Joined your Patron for $8 a month. Your my favorite guitar teacher
Thanks so much Mark I appreciate it!
Same
Thank you. You’re an amazing teacher. Keep up the great work
Nice ..brian jonestown massacre intro. ..Great channel this ..
FIRST! YES!!!!
Hey! How do you like that Superbee? Superbee or Bel Ray?
The Pentatonic boxes are just specific shells or subsets of "safe" notes that you can visualize .. the bottom line is if you learn all the position patterns, how they are interconnected, and why those pentatonic boxes are what they are, you'll learn (hopefully) how everything is interconnected and free to delve out of "the box." In other words, if you learn keys
not just by letter name, but also know interval relationships from string to string and up a single string, for the different keys, you're on your way, especially when you know the sound to expect for any given interval, double stop, or other harmony.
My $0.02.
Amazing teaching. Maybe it's time to dig in to major pentatonics after 13 years of playing..
what guitar and model is that? Not the tele, the other one ;). Thanks!
All these nice sounding, good looking, beautifully lit and brilliantly played guitars are giving me some serious GAS…
Calvin
Can we also say that any of the notes in these sliding scales can be used in double stop form as well? As long as we’re taking notes from the scale?
Oh yeah totally!
