In the case of the slur, someone who plays (or sings - slurs can equally apply to sung notes) the notes and leaves noticeable gaps between the notes marked with one (i.e. plays/sings the notes disjointed or “staccato”) would be breaking the slur’s instruction to play/sing the notes smoothly, with no such gaps between them. In the case of the tie, in the example of the minim/half-note (the name depending on what part of the English-speaking world you are in) tied to the crotchet/quarter-note, the audio of that would just sound the same as if it were a dotted minim/dotted half-note; the note would be held for as long as the player/singer had completed the entirety of the aggregate total of all of the tied notes’ values.
I hate to admit this: I've been playing for 30 years but I became stupid suddenly and totally couldn't remember these rules! Ha! But thanks to that, I've found your channel so I hope to brush up on some theory. Thanks!
Great video, some of these tutorials are timeless, so helpful. Could maybe add musical examples, but for a Uni student studying music this channel is perfect 👏
Really good explanation of slurs and ties. Goes into a lot of the variations and edge conditions that are usually left unexplained. Very thorough, which is a rarity. Playing a demonstration would have been a great improvement.
thank you! i think it would be great though if you could do a video or two summarising all of the different rules for beaming in simple and compound time!
Thanks! I understand the difference between a slur and a tie. But what is the difference between a slur and a phrase line? (Or are these the same thing?!)
thank you sooooo much you have no idea how you've just helped me. I have a project and i never knew ties and slurs are played differently. Thank you though i wish we could hear the examples
How about phrase markings? As a classical guitarist, I've played a lot of pieces with ambiguous markings. In some cases, you appear to get a slur over several notes only to later find out that it is merely to group notes into a phrase. Usually having multiple notes across different strings indicates they are not to be slurred, however there's some cases in which slurs are done across different strings.
UPS there went "all my understanding out the window": I thought I could easily spot the difference between ties ans slurs, until At 3:24, he says that ties always starts and ends on the note-head, but at 5:10 he shows a slur under the tie, from note-head to note-head. So, as my little brain can figure out...... THE ONLY way to SEE the difference between ties and slurs would be that ties are only used for notes that has the same pitch. PLEASE correct me if I understand this the wrong way. And finally: This individual = "musictheoryguy" have a VERY nice and easy explanatory voice, hence very skilled at explaining. Impressive indeed.
Question, I have come across notes D-D-B with the slur in the same bar. What does that make this? A tie or slur? There is no tie added for the two Ds. This would look just like the last bar of notes in this video but just without the tie. Anyway great video, that makes a lot of sense.Just wondering how slurred notes like this should be played.
Thanks, really well explained! I have a question: If ties extend accidentals across bar lines, how would you write it if you wanted to just slur a sharped/flatted note to the natural? E.g. slur from Eb to E (as opposed to tying Eb to another Eb) - would you just put a natural sign on the second note?
hey, someone else who knows music here. That is correct: unless you indicate that the next note is a natural, two tied notes (even across a bar) will hold the same accidental, whether that is sharp flat double-sharp double-flat etc. Though it has been two months since you asked that question, so I'm guessing you already found the answer by now hopefully :P
I have one question: at 5:01 you mention a video where you covered the rules of beaming, but I can't find it which one it is. Do you have that video on your channel? Your channel is by far one of the best channels about music theory. Your explanations are so direct and complete, makes it a lot easier tounderstand. Thank you so much, you've helped me a lot.
That tends to happen whenever there are multiple tracks on one stave (i.e. when there are parts with stems up and parts with stems down); in such cases you do tend to see the slurs at the top of the stems going up so that they do not conflict with the note-heads of the notes with stems down.
so if there are two lines both ending at two different notes , basically the example at the end, I would just play a all of those notes in order but the first two notes on the same bow? and up to the last note I play it smoothly? or do I play it all in one note? Please help I gotta know 😭🙏🏽
So dotted notes can't go over bars? any time you want to go over the bar you have to fill the current bar then tie the remaining beat on the next bar correct?
Because you can't play two of the exact same notes logato. It would be playing it twice. Logato is for different notes. Though you can play a notes twice in a slur but they will not be beside each other and will have a different note or notes between them.
Excellent news! So pleased you found my video useful. If you haven't already done so - please do subscribe to my channel ua-cam.com/users/musictheoryguy! Best wishes.
Beaming is having these eighth notes written under one joining horizontal line, a beam. You know that sometimes these eighth notes can be single, right? Meaning they would have a flag attached.
I do understand this but it seems really inconvenient. we really need some more intuitive system for rhythm.... something you could understand just by looking at it.
Great but it would've been more helpful (for me), if we could hear the examples of the above.

Ah a man of culture
Covered all the bases really well and understandably good job
Great video, some of these tutorials are timeless, so helpful. Could maybe add musical examples, but for a Uni student studying music this channel is perfect 👏
Best explanation, i have been so freakin confused for days.
This was very clear and very useful. This is was exactly what I wanted to know. Thank you!
Simple and Clear explanations. Thank you so much for creating and sharing..
Thank you for the wonderful feedback!

I am learning music theory by myself .. Thanks million I think your videos is the best ......
Thanks again! These videos are so helpful, I'm looking forward to the video on 'beaming' !
Thanks, you literally helped me so much!
brilliant, concise and clear. Thanks very much, most appreciatrd.
Thanks! I understand the difference between a slur and a tie. But what is the difference between a slur and a phrase line? (Or are these the same thing?!)
Concise! Very useful for understanding this topic ! thank you very much

Great video. Very easy to understand. Thanks for many useful examples. I like it very much !!!!!
Thanks so much! I am so happy I have found your channel👍
👍🏻
Thank you very much sir.
Namaste from Nepal 🇳🇵🙏🙏🙏🇳🇵
Thank you for sharing! This is so informative!
This is very well presented indeed. I have to agree, however, that audio examples would have been "the icing on the cake".

I have a very small following on my site, but I will be referring my viewers to you as an excellent resource.
Can you publish the slides so students can print?
thank you, short, dense and clear
wonderful ... crystal clear ... thanks

Fantastic explanation!
Thank you for your helpful tutorial.
Hi there, is there a video that explains beaming.. i think you mentioned it in one of your videos but i can't seem to find the video. Thanks!
Amazing video!HELPFUL!!Keep GOING!!!
this was great! thank u
I'm honestly just wondering ( for the ties) do we tongue the tied notes or play legato?
100% clear
thank you!

as a beginner this helped lots, thanks
Just out of curiosity, would you be able to play slurs on a harp?
This was very helpful, thank you!
Thank you so much , I've been stressing over my test until now thank you for explaining this
I love your content; are you still creating today?
Well explained!
Thank you!!!! I was so confused before I saw this.
Could you please tell us which is the video in which you have explained beaming?
Thanks! A nice and clear video, just what I needed!
Thank you. I finally learned the difference between the tie and the slur!
Excellent news! It's very easy to get the two muddled - I'm delighted to hear that you now know the difference between the two. Best wishes.
But how long is a slur?
Like say two notes are to be slurred, how would you count that?
Great vid, what about a dotted slur seen in violin music?
What of tied pairs of notes, where the root is the same pitch, second note isn't? Same rules?
Yeah. You would hold the root note, while the other would change.
Fantastic, explained it well enough for me. Thank you.
I simply MUST subscribe-I'll show my subscriptions!
AWESOME VIDEO! Helped me a LOT!
This is great to hear! Many thanks for your feedback. Best wishes.
excellent. really helpful. what about if the slur is on top of a phrase? when should it be on top?

In prelude in c major of Bach why do we find ties in stem (bass cleff /left hand section) ? Please explain
Nice video
but can u tell me the difference of a slur that has to be tongued or that should not be tongued :)
Thank you! I was so confused about this for the longest time 😔✊
It helps me a lot.
Nice video, keep up the good work. Thanks much.
so if there are two lines both ending at two different notes , basically the example at the end, I would just play a all of those notes in order but the first two notes on the same bow? and up to the last note I play it smoothly? or do I play it all in one note? Please help I gotta know 😭🙏🏽
Helped me out on the clarinet, thank you sir!!!
So dotted notes can't go over bars? any time you want to go over the bar you have to fill the current bar then tie the remaining beat on the next bar correct?
Courtesy can use remind method.
What if there is a slur in between two of the same notes?
Because you can't play two of the exact same notes logato. It would be playing it twice. Logato is for different notes. Though you can play a notes twice in a slur but they will not be beside each other and will have a different note or notes between them.
Yes! Very clear. Thank you so much!
Great, very helpful. As an american, Hearing quaver does hurt quite a bit though.
U r Amazing love your teaching
Thankyou so much. This was very helpful.
This was so helpful thank you
Excellent video, thanks mate!
Best video out there, thank you
gd explanation,,,,,,,,,, bt it wd have been more better if it was explained with audio examples !!!
Why is the example at 4:40 wrong
1 half note is 4 quavers+2 quavers + 1 dotted quarter note=9
Please help
This video helped me a lot! Thank you!!
Can slur can be used across the bar line
Wow, thanks, this helped a lot! :D
A slur is the same as if I pick a string than hammer on to the other notes in solo???
Yes, this was very helpful to me.
I finally get it! Thank you musical theory guy!
A slur can be the same as if I pick the string and than hammer on to all the other notes ln solos????
Stephen Wiles, bravo
This was so great, thank you!
Excellent news! So pleased you found my video useful. If you haven't already done so - please do subscribe to my channel ua-cam.com/users/musictheoryguy! Best wishes.
I don't get it Im learning a song but it uses tie like symbols but it makes no sense
The hip hop genre makes copious use of slurs.
great explanation! Thanks!
But probably be greater if there were sample sounds 😊
5:00 what's beaming?
Beaming is having these eighth notes written under one joining horizontal line, a beam. You know that sometimes these eighth notes can be single, right? Meaning they would have a flag attached.
What about phrase marks?
I like this vedio
Although this video is pretty useful , I was wondering why no acoustic examples were given
Thank you!!!
just this: if you see that line, dont lift up your hand.
No, he didn't say 4 Crochets = 1 Minim (which is incorrect).
He said 4 Quavers = 1 Minim (which is correct).
i am taking music class in college and I have no clue how to do my homework
god bless this man
Thanks mate
Thank u very much
Thank you

THANK YOU SO MUCH!
