  • After more than 40 years of virtual silence, Valerie Hemingway, the confidante of Ernest, shares stories of her years living and traveling with Ernest and Mary Hemingway.
Her new book, Running with the Bulls: My Life with the Hemingways, was provoked by an editor's discovery of uncataloged papers, manuscripts and letters rotting in the basement of the Hemingways' former home in Cuba. Valerie, having put the papers in the basement to begin with, agreed to sort through them and prepare them for deposit at The Kennedy Library. The process spurred her finally to write the memoir that she had started repeatedly but had never been able to complete. The critical response to Ms. Hemingway's book is that it has been well worth the wait.

I feel fortunate to have Valerie as an acquaintance and a former teacher at Montana State University Billings. Three hours a week of Hemingway for an entire semester is something I will always treasure. She is a treasure and a charming lady.

Great interview. And now I know she’s my neighbor in Montana. Wow, just love Ernest Hemingway, have a signed edition of “For whom the Bell Tolls”, a gift from a dear Big Game hunter, same as he was. Maybe I’ll meet you sometime. I’ll be sure to read this book.

Valerie wrote and interesting book about her life with Gigi and the rest of the Hemingways. It's entitled, I think, "Living with Hemingway Men", or something close to that. I read it and found it, and her, fascinating.

Thats a bad kid... no she is being raped... thats my mom. She ran away to Washington DC at age 16. To her mom.. she finally got back to mommy...and my mom later had a total of 6 children. Odd that when people mention "soul" and its destiny, it's like a joke or something. Which it is precisely not.

The UK is still very secular. Religion is a private matter and politicians don't use God in speeches etc Very few people go to church.

Seventeen minutes in, nd I feel sorry for the interviewer! She talks so much; they hardly get to ask a single question! Tough interview.
