    What a great tip. I am new to framing and can cut accurate mitres, but still have problems getting a tight join. I have fairly cheap jig that I bought, which is for hammering in corner nails, but it really does not work well. I will definitely try this one. Thanks for sharing your expertise.

  • @theofarmmanager267
    @theofarmmanager267 2 роки тому +2

    I’ve been woodworking for 45 plus years. I’ve got this jig (as well as several others) and, within its limitations, it’s very good. However, no jig will make a badly cut picture frame work. It’s not as easy as you might think to get 90 degrees corners. Everything from timber moving under the blade to haveing machines cutting not exactly 45 degrees (setting a machine to cut what your measuring devices says is 45 has in built machine and measuring errors)
    The easiest way that I know to ensure you have 4 x 90 degree corners - and this will work for all sizes of frames is to take a large piece of plywood (say 600 x 600 x 18mm) plus two pieces that are, say, 300 x 40 x 18mm. You start by mounting the big piece over 2 lengths of carefully cut hardwood which give a tight fit in the mitre slots either side of your table saw or band saw. You should now have a top which slides easily bit not loosely along your top. Now take those 2 bits of 300 x 400 and cut each to 45 degrees - get as close as you can but absolute accuracy is not required, say +/-1/2 a degrees. Now place those 2 bits so that the apex of the (roughly) 90 degree corner that you get when you put the 2 45 degree-ish corners together. The apex of that right angle should be in line with your saw blade and the inside of that joint roughly in line with the saw blade also. Now, with CA glue to get instant bonding and PU glue to get long term strength, glue down those 2 cut strips as described but use a known 90 degree square to make sure that the outside angle is exactly 90 degrees - this is the only part where accuracy is required.
    When cured, and you can obviously add screws if in doubt, set the jig in the mitre slots and make a cut so that the blade goes through the (nearly) 90 degrees joint but only just through the inside part of those 2 glued strips. If you now cut every corner of any frame making sure that, for every corner, one piece is cut along the left hand side of the strips and the other part is cut along the right hand side, you will always get a perfect 90 degree corner even if one part is 45.5 degrees and the other 44.5; the total will always be 90.
    So, the only part to really take your time over is making sure that 90 degree angle you make with a square is perfect. One advantage of this jig over others is that it doesn’t matter what size picture frame you are making. After glueing, you can use whatever jig you have: the one shown here is very good but will need 2 of the fixed wedges to be moved to accommodate different frame sizes.

    Shane, I just watched your video on the world's easiest picture frame jig. How would this go with live edges - I want to make frames where the live edge is on the outside of the frame so I'm not going to have nice square edges

      OK Jesper....listen up mate. When you "Frame" somebody, it means you set some innocent person up for a crime which they didn't commit that ultimately sends them to jail.....hence when l "framed a picture" l sent them (the picture) to jail for a crime they didn't commit????? Get back to me 😂

    Great video. Seen your picture frame jig in the colosseum video and it was brilliant seeing it being put together in this vid. As for wood glue, I have used it for years and have to agree with you on its strength, where the wood glue joining is actually becomes stronger than the wood itself. Oh and the Dad jokes are getting woefully worse as your videos appear.

      He wanted to give himself a little extra wiggle room. Makes it much easier to add the frame, and allows the wedges to sit very close to even when tight. Just a nice touch - not truly necessary, but appreciated.
