I really appreciate your emphasis on listening to natives a lot right from the beginning. I think this is easy to neglect when we don't understand at first, but acquiring the sound system is so important. It's not something we can show off to impress anyone, but it lays the foundation for future progress. At the most basic level, a language just IS sound (+ meaning/context).

I never thought of it like that, language is sound plus meaning and context, totally agree, I think getting familiar with the sounds early is so important, I couldn't believe that it actually worked and I started to understand more and more after a while of consistent listening.

I don't have a specific motivation to learn Mandarin/Chinese i just like how the language sounds, and unfortunately I'm an extremely lazy person, but i intend to start to learn Mandarin later this year, I’m still learning English so it'll be probably exhausting but let's go.

I want to learn Chinese to be able to communicate with my boyfriend's parents in their native language! We usually speak in English, but I'm going to China with them for two months this summer and I'm hoping to be able to learn something before that and while I'm there. They jokingly keep asking when I'm going to start learning some Chinese, so I want to surprise them eventually, hopefully in a few years, with some proficiency! I tend to give up super easily when it comes to languages I'm not fully immersed in, so hopefully this is an amazing chance to challenge myself and my commitment! Thank you so much for the tips, it was an amazing video!
