My family lives in Michigan, and we have family that lives in the Gettysburg area. In 1972 when I was 12 we took a trip to Gettysburg to see these family members and to tour the battlefield. While there my uncle gave my sister and myself each a .58 caliber Minie ball fired during the civil war battle. Yes, I know you could walk into just about any museum back then and but a hand full of them. But my uncle found these Minie balls in his back yard.

I’ve been very fortunate to have found a number of artifacts over time and I can honestly say they are all very significant.

Using archeology, much was learned about troop battle lines at the Brawner Farm on the 2nd Manassas battlefield.

What happens to the artifacts that are recovered from the battlefield? Are they put on display in a museum?

As of now they are in storage. I’m sure they will rotate them in and out as time goes on, as they do with a lot of the collection. They have so many items and couldn’t possibly display them all at once.

I wonder if they are going to talk about the ordnance shell that was found on February eighth 2023 within the little round top rehabilitation area and I am wondering if they are going to talk about it because I am interested in learning how a shell that was fired during the Battle of Gettysburg could still be live today and I am interested in learning this because I have a personal connection to an ordnance shell that went off after the Battle of Gettysburg and I don’t have a date for when this shell that I have a personal connection to went off but the personal connection that I have to an ordnance shell is an interesting and confusing story and the story revolves around my 3rd great grand uncle David Martin Luther Weikert and it’s an interesting story because my ancestor didn’t tell the true story of what happened to him and what happened to him was he was plowing his field with his plow but while supposedly plowing his field the plow struck an ordnance shell and the explosion caused by the shell blinded him and after his blinding the family called him blind davey however there’s another story that says that he was blinded when the road bed was being built for the round top siding of the reading railroad.

Sorry the fact that they evacuated and blew the shell up tells me that these people have no knowledge of American Civil war ordinances. What a waste of a valuable artifact. The shell could have been disarmed easily and displayed for all to see. What a waste. Sad.

Well, they have thousands just like it in storage. It’s not like it was rare.

@@addressinggettysburg No disrespect but a shell from that area is quite rare in the fact that it was from there. Yes there are tons in storage and displayed collections you are right about that. I mean no disrespect sir.

While it could have been most likely diffused. I'm sure it was an EOD call who care little about preservation. Would have been a process. I'm glad the went out to salvage what the could.
