Приєднався 1 бер 2018
Addressing Gettysburg is the original Podcast about the Battle of Gettysburg, in Gettysburg PA. On this channel we will publish all of our shows, along with other original content concerning the History of the Town of Gettysburg, the Battle of Gettysburg, and the resulting tourism industry that rose since this small Pennsylvania town earned its place in history on July 1, 2, & 3 of 1863.
ASK A GETTYSBURG GUIDE #99- SCALES' BRIGADE- with LBG Chris Army and Patron "McNair"
LBG Chris Army is joined by hater-turned-Patron Dwayne. Som eknow him as "McNair." Dwayne has done extensive research on Scales' Brigade and asked if he could sit in on an Ask A Guide. We love to include our Patrons in whatever they can contribute to, so, of course, I said yes.
Scales Brigade (from its Brigade Plaque):
C. S. A.
Army of Northern Virginia
Hills Corps Pender’s Division
Scales’s Brigade
13th 16th 22nd 34th 38th North Carolina Infantry
July 1. Crossed Willoughby Run about 3.30 P. M. relieving Heth’s line and advancing with left flank on Chambersburg Pike took part in the struggle until it ended. When the Union forces made their final stand on Seminary Ridge the Brigade charged and aided in dislodging them but suffered heavy losses. Gen. A. M. Scales was wounded and all the field officers but one were killed or wounded.
July 2. In position near here with skirmishers out in front and on flank.
July 3. In Longstreet’s assault the Brigade supported the right wing of Pettigrew’s Division. With few officers to lead them the men advanced in good order through a storm of shot and shell and when the front line neared the Union works they pushed forward to aid it in the final struggle and were among the last to retire.
July 4. After night withdrew and began the march to Hagerstown.
Present about 1250 Killed 102 Wounded 381 Missing 116 Total 599

Dedication Day Special- "A Few Fitting Words": The Gettysburg Address In Context with Bob Steenstra
Переглядів 2,7 тис.19 годин тому
"A golden apple in a silver picture", The Gettysburg Address conjures up an almost religious feeling in the hearts of many Americans. With only 272 words, Abraham Lincoln was able to say more about where America had been, was and will be than any politician before or since. But what is the context of his speech beyond dedicating a cemetery? Just what do its words and phrase mean when you break ...
"Four Score and Seven Years Before": Gettysburg In The Revolutionary War with Kenneth Gavin
Переглядів 37321 годину тому
Historian and Patron Kenneth Gavin joins us to talk about Gettysburg during the American Revolution. That's right, it existed before July 1, 1863. This is Part 1 of a 2-part series exploring the make-up of the town, how it contributed to the war effort, the economy and more. I really enjoyed learning about Gettysburg in a different era of American history and I think you will too. Ken is an eng...

Confederate Officers’ Wounds at Gettysburg with LBG Rick Schroeder- Ask A Gettysburg Guide #89
Court rocks. Great addition.
I see a lot of union soldiers.but what about the confederate soldiers ? Why are they not represented?
They were at the end of the parade. Gotta watch the whole video. Also, it’s really a holiday to remember United States soldiers.
I was standing near Gettysburg Eddies with my girlfriend, and when I heard Garryowen flawlessly being played in the distance and behind them was a large row of perfectly aligned muskets in close step, I turned to her and was about to say something when she grabbed my shoulder and said “that’s them!”
I’d be interested in all that you mentioned- especially Dr Murray on Meade. For selfish reasons I’d like to know more about Evander Law and Birney/Hobart Ward and the fight around Devil’s Den.
Great Vid
David M. Gregg would be an interesting general to highlight on a tour
On one of Matt’s Battle Anniversary shows, Charlie Fennell stated that he felt Gregg had more to do with the AOP victory than any other cavalry commander- even Buford. It was a second day anniversary show.
Wondering what you know about the Potomac 4 wheel traveling kitchen? An Australian newspaper of 1864 states:- "A Locomotive Kitchen - A 'New York Journal says that a cooking apparatus on four wheels, and drawn by two horses, which is intended to be used for the Army of the Potomac, has been constructed in New York. It has cooking facilities for four hundred men, and must prove an acceptable aid in the operation of the Commission. The cooking-waggon consists of three boilers, for making tea, coffee, and soup; each boiler holding fourteen gallons, and capable while on the move, with good fuel, of boiling ten gallons each every twenty minutes - while stationary, twelve gallons in the same time (twenty minutes), which would be from ninety to ono hundred and eight gallons per hour."
I googled it and couldn’t find anything. Never heard of it until now. I’ll ask around though. I’ll also pin this in the hopes that someone else might see it and be able to help you.
Great episode guys, thank you!
Our pleasure!
What a great show. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
Equal rights. Yes !!!! Lazy, too bad.
Another interesting interview. See ya in 2 weeks for the “quiz” and Xmas party.
I’d also be interested in learning more about, Gen. Samuel S. Carrol, of the Gibraltar Brigade. 🙂
The flag you were confused about that said was too shiny is made of silk, I was one of the ones in that regiment.
Yeah it’s funny( I was in a relic shop and they had some silk Rebel flags. I had always thought they were made of wool or cotton or something more durable. Interesting.
You talked about getting soldiers to “shoot to kill:” here’s some information on the subject & how modern training is making individuals better at it: ua-cam.com/video/zViyZGmBhvs/v-deo.htmlsi=wSfPGxPlY-ZXCMUF
Chancellor a forgotten part of the history. They were cut up badly here.
"Don't call me Lowrence..."
Born and raised in the Land of Lincoln (the good part south of I-72 😉). I was fortunate to have many class field trips to his home in Springfield, New Salem, and Lincoln’s Tomb growing up. He’s viewed as just shy of a deity in Illinois. 😊
How could anyone hate, Matt Callery? 😳
Have you got some time? Because this will take a while 😂😂😂
Lol
I have read Mr. Huntington's book. I recommend it.
Just dirty. Then again, immigrants made up to 50% of some regiments. Emancipation was pragmatic. What jobs did blacks get in the Union? Oh yes...they dutifully served as human shields (54th Mass.) and as prison guards in places like Camp Hoffman. I.e. they performed jobs no whites would willingly take. As a side note we have Grant's General Order #11 which exposed the North's ongoing participation in the cotton trade. The textile mills didn't just close shop upon the opening shots at Ft. Sumter. Then came half a century of sharecropping. All of this was beyond cynical. The whole dang affair. Beyond cynical. But great interview as always. Perhaps more will begin digging into the dollars and sense of it all.
My husband’s 3rd great grandfather was in the 102nd PA volunteers at the wheat field-found the above in his pension request….
One word for the speech: people. (founding) fathers, the brave men (living and dead), us and THE PEOPLE.
I was carrying the national flag with the Berdan Sharpshooters. My first time out since joining them. Solid group with a long history. Thank you for the great coverage!!!
Hater is such a strong word 😂
lol well, I gotta create some drama in the story
@@addressinggettysburg😂
Ricky Fowlers wife here 😂 Matt lies! His voice is soothing! In fact, I think he needs to record audio books or bedtime stories. Also, Little Ground Top is elite.
Lol thank you
Son of the morning star is one of my favorites
Mine too!
Great show!
I don’t know why; but when, Matt, disrupts the news with sound effects & the girls ignore him & continue talking; I find it hilarious. 😂
😂😂😂 that’s the idea! Glad you get it
Hell yeah Abe 😎
Having, Dirty Billy, on AG is a fantastic idea! 🙂👍🏻
I agree
The Minie ball was undersized, making it easy to load, even with a fouled barrel. But if you tried loading a round ball after that many rounds you would have trouble.
I visited Gettysburg for the first time back in July. I was lucky enough to have Mr. Trott as my LBG for an afternoon. Couldn’t have asked for a better experience! That dude definitely loves what he does!
Matt is the man! Have him back anytime you need Maryland Civil War expertise!! 👍👍
I was with the Zouaves of the 5th New York.. Thank you for posting!
Late here. GREAT discussion. LOVE the convo after 54:00 re: Lincoln's unsent letter And you're right, Sickles "poisoned Lincoln's mind early on". Question is...who was Sickles REALLY working for? i of course have him in England with none other than GEORGE PEABODY, at the infamous dinner... Wondering if he was privy to that OTHER meeting in London in 1856 hosted by George Sanders... He was definitely steering not only the narrative but events as well. This is why all the GBG regulars stick to the salient and yeah, have fun regaling crowds with the stories of philandering... But never hone in on the power he had, the attention of "the king's ear", and the levers he pulled preceding the war as a DIPLOMAT
Outstanding show.
Glad you enjoyed it
my Boys! sorry i missed it this year!
Lots of hard work, dedication and resources go into their impression. Keeping a dying hobby/lifestyle alive. Nice work 👏
Statler and Waldorf Gettysburg style. Very enjoyable commentary
Thank you
Sore throat, Matt? Nice job, keeping going. Mostly.
Amazing insight. Another great show, Matt. 🙂🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thank you
Wonderful!!
👍
Thanks for the coverage! You and Bethany covered this like ABC covered the Rose Bowl Parade. First class work! We enjoyed it, thanks!
lol thanks
The crowd falls silent when the confederates march up because it's weird AF
Indeed. But my Point is that switched like a light switch a few years ago and it’s fascinating. It’s not in protest. I think, as you say, it’s weird and people don’t know how to react.
@@addressinggettysburg For sure. It’s very interesting. I think people are shocked and just don’t know how to act. Reasonably so, in my opinion
The first band was the 73rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Band
