알면 알수록 어렵고 재밌네요ㅠㅠ미국에서 강의하고 있는데요. 그냥 대화할때는 흘러가는 말이라 괜찮은데, 이시국인지라 강의를 녹화하다보니 제가 쓰는 단어나 표현을 자꾸 자체검열(??)하게 돼서 힘들었거든요. 선생님 강의는 이 표현은 이러이러한 상황에서 써도 되는구나! 혹은 어색하구나 확신을 갖게 해주어서 굉장히 좋아요. 많이 배우고 있습니다. 감사합니다!

I think I know what peoples’ comments mean. He’s an great actor but this time his acting leaves a lot to be desired. I guess this role was not fit for him.

영어식 표현이랑 한국식 표현의 차이는 번역할때 극명하게 느낄 수 있더라고요.. 얘네들은 의사소통 방식이 우리랑은 아예 다른 것 같다고 거의 자주 느낍니다.
문법도 문법이지만 어떤 대상을 두고 그것에 대해 이야기하거나, 묘사하려 단어들를 조합해 만든 문장들을 보면 우리가 쓰는 표현방식이랑 아예 틀린게 많아 한국어로 어떻게 바꿔쓸지 정말 머리 쥐어짜면서 고심했던 적이 한두번이 아닙니다.
그걸 느껴본 입장으로서 정말 도움이 되는 영상이었어요. 감사합니다.

I think she could've played the violin with more confidence.

There's an interesting pattern that I see when native speakers use the expression "leave -- to be desired". It's usually when there is more than one thing that they wish was different. In other words, when there is one specific thing that they wish was different and they intend to mention it, they would just use one of your alternative sentences :
/ I wish the school had chosen another month for the new project.
/ I think the project could've been started after May.
- I bought two *pairs of sneakers online. One was for me and ....
- I got them after a few days / I got them a few days later
- ... the color was a little brighter than what I saw online
- I wish I had read the reviews more carefully 😀

정서를 깊숙히 알 수 있는 유일한 방법. 영어는 한국어와 달리 더 본질에 접근하는 언어인거 같아요.

우리말에서는 "아쉬움이 많이 남지만 오늘은 헤어져야 겠네요" 이런 말 많이 쓰는데 속 뜻은 긍정적인 의미로. 영어는 항상 부정적인 것 같아요

when I was quitting my job, I bent over backwards to leave it on good terms telling the manager that I am planning to work abroad a month in advance and doing my work as usual not just the minimum, saying things positive about the company and coworkers I worked with etc. however, she didn't seem very happy with my resign and at some point stopped talking to me other than the work thing and so did i. I felt frustrated for a while but now that I am leaving Korea soon, I think I kind of miss the camaraderie with her. I wish I could've handle the situation better.. :)

@@LVACDMY 일을 그만둘때, 최대한 좋게 끝내고 싶어서 그만두기 한달 전에 미리 해외에서 일할 생각이다 라고 말하고 일도 열심히 하고 사람들에게 좋은이야기( 좋은 회사다많이 배웠다) 도 하고 했었어요. 근데 매니저가 어느순간부터 저한테 일적인거외에 이야기를 하지 않길래 저도 그냥 똑같이 그랬어요. 막상 한국을 떠나게되니까 그분과 같이 일했던게 그립네요. 그때 좀더 잘 상황을 대처했으면 좋았었겠다 라는게 제가 생각했던 것입니다 ㅎㅎ 답글 감사합니다❤️❤️

I have to say that Apple's new Ipad Air model leaves somewhat to be desired regarding its scanning rates.
The salad dish that I had last night wasn't bad per se, but the yogurt on the salad wasn't quite fresher than the other ingredients.

고정된 표현을 학습해서 상황에 맞게 쓰는 것도 필요하겠지만 그보다 기본기로 다양한 상황에서 유연하게 쓰는 연습이 저에겐 더 필요한 거 같습니다.
문제는 그 기본기가 도대체 언제 탄탄해질런지.ㅜ.ㅜ 그래도 선생님 강의들로 제 기본기는 채워져오고 있습니다.❤

너무 중요한 얘기에요. 표현에 대한 어그로가 진짜 진짜 잘 먹히는 시장이라 거기에 집중하게 되는데 그러다보면 근본적인 아이디어를 전하는 걸 잊게되고 모든 걸 다 외우지않으면 말을 할 수 없게되는 상황이 벌어지죠. 모든 걸 다 외우는 건 불가능한데도 말이죠.

-The chicken and the pasta were great. But the pizza wasn`t quite up there with the rest./ quite on par with the rest. Yeah I would even say that it was above average. It`s just that the others were so exceptionally good that it made the pizza seem worse.

최근에 정책에 대한 흥미로운 기사를 읽었어. 유용하더라고, 정보도 많이 얻었어. 한 가지 아쉬운 거라면, 시각 자료가 있었으면 좀 더 이해하기 쉬웠을 텐데 말이야. Recently I read an article talikng about an interesting issue on a new policy. It was pretty useful. I can get a lot of information from it. But one thing that leaves a liitle to be desired is that it dosen't have some visual matireals to make people easily understand.

But, the pizza X [It left something to be desired]. 음식의 평을 했을 때와 영화 평론의 차이가 약간 이해하기 애매한 상태에요. 혹시 무언가 평을 이야기 할 때 The restaurant's Google rating and reviews were great, but it left something to be desired. 같은 예문은 맞을까요? 개인적인 비교가 아닌 무언가 생각했던 기대에 못 미칠 때 쓰는 게 자연스럽다고 이해 중 입니다.

I think the artist could have kept his prime longer had he managed well his personal life. I've heard that he was born with an unrivaled talent but he tended just to lean(depend) on his ability and neglected to practice to strengthen his talent. Even though he was born a genius he just could perform on the big stage only in his twenties. I wish he had realized his mistake before too late and it still leaves a lot to be desired.
Which artist are you talking about? 😀 Anyway, here are a few suggestions / corrections :
- I think the artist could've been in his prime longer had he managed his personal life better
- .... but instead of strengthening his skills with practice, he took things for granted and solely depended on his talent.
(I know I made a lot of changes to this sentence. i'll explain why during the live stream follow-up)
- Even though he was born a genius, he didn't gain mainstream spotlight until he was in his twenties.
- I wish he had realized he was wasting his potential before it was too late.
- ".... and it still leaves a lot to be desired." (this expression, although it makes sense, it doesn't feel quite natural in this context because we're talking about a very clear mistake that someone has made and wishing that the artist had avoided that mistake in a very specific way. Unlike how the expressions looks and sounds, the expression refers to the imperfect, unsatisfactory state of something rather than how we feel about it 😀 I'll talk a little bit about this in the live stream follow-up.

It leaves a little bit to be desired. Of course technology's development is that you need to be adept it.
But sometimes, it is too complicated to order only one cup of coffee.
Also I'm afraid that seniors must be hard with it. I think it could have been more simple.

(Oh, just so you know, "it leaves something to be desired" doesn't necessarily refer to 'a single thing', meaning that you can use the expression even when you have more than one complaints about the car. So, it can sound a bit more natural by adding an expression like "for one thing"(하나를 언급하자면) :
..... but it leaves something to be desired. For one thing, I wish the battery life was longer."

한국어는 한 단어가 상황에따라 여러 뉘앙스로 받아들여질 수 있는 구조이지만 영어의 경우 비슷한 단어처럼 보이나 여러 단어들 중 전달하고자하는 뉘앙스에 따라 그에 맞는 단어를 선택해야하기 때문에 그 차이를 인지하고 단순히 한국어영어가 아니라 근본적으로 언어의 구조 자체가 다름부터 인지하는 게 먼저임

(요전에 모델하우스에 갔었다. 그들은 완벽한아파트를 만들기위해 심혈을 기울였다고 하지만, 아쉬운점이 있었다. 거실이 좀더 넓었으면.아쉽다 -> 과거일를 말하니깐 It left ~로 써야되나요? 아님, 하나의표현이라서 그냥 현재로 쓰나요?)
과거형으로 쓰기도 하지만 현재형으로 쓰는 경우가 월등히 많은데, 그 이유는, 다음번에는(앞으로는) 더 잘 하기를, 더 좋은 것으로 나오기를, 더 좋게 하기를 바라는 마음을 전달할 때 많이 쓰는 표현이기 때문이에요. 하지만, 그 때 한 번으로 끝난 일에 대해서 과거형으로 쓰기도 해요 😀

- leave ---- to be desired 표현의 활용에 대한 하나의 특이한 점은 그 아쉬운 부분이 어느 특정한 하나라면, 그리고 그 하나를 이어서 언급을 할 때는 잘 안 쓴다는 거예요. 다시 말해서, 그 집이 아쉬운 점이 딱 하나이고 그것이 거실이 좁다는 것이라면 이 표현을 쓰기 보다는 그냥 그 묘사를 하는 게 일반적이에요. - 예를 들어:
For the most part, it's a nice apartment. But, I really wish the living room was a little more spacious. 😀
영어를 배우면서 '말을 잘한다'는게 어떤건지 새삼 깨닫고 있어요. 상황에 따라 표현이 달라진다는 말도 이해가되구요.😅
