  • With many options, Cura users often find the configuration of 3d model supports confusing and difficult. In this video, I walk through both the basic and advance Cura 4.X options include support blockers and the powerful custom support plugin. With wide support for 3d printers from Creality, Prusa, Monoprice, Anet, and other 3d printer manufacturers Cura is a solid choice as your primary slicer. Over the last year, Cura updates are released often and these updates have positioned it as a leading slicer right alongside PrusaSlicer and Simplify 3d.
    The overhang test model used in this video is located on Thingiverse here:

    Folks, sorry but there is an editing mistake in the video. I spoke the same sentence twice at about 3:16. No, it is not a health issue. When recording I often repeat a phrase if I think I can do it better and fix it in post possessing. But I missed one edit at 3:16. I was tempted to try and fix this with the UA-cam online editor but it is handing anytime I try and touch the video. So I need to leave it for now.

      Some people prefer a slower presentation. If I record my narative slowly people that want it fast are able to play at 1.25, 1.5 or even 2x and it still sounds ok.

      @@MakeWithTech Sir. thanks for the response. Please advise, if there is any scope for increasing the work area of ET4 pro by replacing the aluminum extrusion with a larger size & the heating bed. what changes on the software side do we need on the same controller board as now it's having an opensource firmware available. its all about the budget build as locally hardware will cost less than $50.

    Good video Doc. This will be really helpful for the people new to Cura. I learned about that 'settings guide' and will use it often I'm sure. When you talk about the angle function and where Cura will support overhangs you kept referring to percentages and it is actually degrees. There is a bunch of editing there so you may want to throw up a disclaimer text to the beginning of that section.

    Just watched this today, and I couldn't find the Custom Supports plugin, I think it's been depricated when Cura 5 got released which allows to change objects (like blockers) into supports. New to all this so I'm still learning. Great video with lots of helpful tips though. All the supports features in Cura aren't exactly intuitive to the uninitiated but it makes sense now that I've been introduced to the features.

    Hi Irv. I clocked the double-take... but thought it was MY "health issue" (or a glitch in the Matrix).
    Good to see you looking so well recovered. Useful video as it had never occured to me that intentional stringing might function as cross bracing for delicate support structures, so learned something "new" together.

    Learned lots here. One thing I noticed is when adding supports to a overhanging cylinder, Cure 5.2 wants to add support rings underneath, which can be very hard to remove. Using the custom support add-in (now called cylinder custom support), I can add supports without the rings, ending up with something that can be removed afterwards. The tests I did with the rings, they were not able to be removed.

Not a good choice concerning moving the boat in a hot car. Went to petg. The printing of pla was exeptable. But petg is realy bad. Much wiring, rough surfaces and cracks in sharp eches. I tried many setups but it is not better. Please can you give me a most commen setup tot Cura 4.6.1 and a gcode? I'm afraid to do something realy wrong. I saw most of your video's and your are realy a hero in 3D printers. You are helping me a lot and very much time to understand printing petg. Ps. Nu printer is not self leveling. • @MakeWithTech
      @MakeWithTech  4 роки тому +1

      The process of printing models big or small, detailed or with minimum polygons, is the same. You need to do lots of prints carefully changing one parameter at a time.
      This is why I do not believe in standard optimised profiles. Profiles need to adjust based on not just the printer but also the filament, the humidity in the room and where the filament is stored, the age of your printer, etc.
      Each of use needs to learn how to tune our printers if we are looking for the very best prints.
      A parameter that people tend to neglect is speed. When printing small objects since print times are shorter just slow down the printer --- but not too slow as it will mess up the cooling. I would try printing at 30mm/sec with a small layer high of .12 or .15.
      To maximize detail you may also have to adjust the minimum resolution slicer setting and the settings impacting small details such as print thin walls.
      In 4.7 I noticed some new settings for small features in the experimental section.
      A great place to discuss this is at the DrVax forum located at forum.drvax.com.

    • @rossmaclean2
      @rossmaclean2 4 роки тому

      Have you recently updated the firmware? I would imagine your Z steps have changed from 800 to 400. Some Ender 5 have the 400 step Z screw and some have the 800 step Z screw. If you have the wrong setting selected it will cause your bed to move half the amount it should.
      Hook your printer up to your computer, use a program like pronterface, send a gcode "M92 Z800" and then "M500"
      Or, use the stock firmware and change default_axis_steps_per_unit.
      Or, use the screen/knob to set the steps that way, and then make sure to save it. Go to Control > motion> steps per mm > Z steps. Enter 800. Click save.

    First of all: Nice Video.
    I definitely have a problem I’m trying to solve for almost 3 days now:
    I‘m printing a sailplane. So I want to print the wing of course. The problem is, because those are very thin but high objects At a certain height I face swaying from left to right while it’s printing which makes the print not smooth anymore (the layers become more and more offset) and the wing becomes useless. So I tried with custom supports to support it from horizontal movement
    The real problem is because the supports do not in fact actually TOUCH the object, but just almost, it does absolutely not provide support in a way I want it to.
    Does anyone have experience with that and could maybe help me? I’m despairing actually. I just need a supporting solution for the object not to wobble from left to right while printing.
    Unfortunately because 1. I need laminar flow over the wing and 2. My printing surface is not absolutely even I’m not able to print the wing laying down, so I need to support it from swaying while printing it.
    May someone save my weekend please? 🤝

    • @mdoyle1981
      @mdoyle1981 Рік тому

      I realize your post is an old one but thought I'd try to help in case it is still an issue or someone else has the same issue. For printers that move the bed and where you also have a tall thin structure, orient the structure in your slicer so the longest dimension of the object is aligned with the direction of bed movement. That will help prevent the swaying you're encountering, another thing to try in extreme situations is reducing print speed to slow down bed movement. The print will take a lot longer, but at least it will complete successfully.
