Mate that was beautiful. I love Hangi and the taste of the earth infused into the kai. Food of the soul and our ancestors. Great video brought a sense joy to my heart. ❤
The best Hangi vid out there. Clearly takes the viewer from start to completion. The proof is in the pudding ie: we witness for ourselves the final result - and it looks splendid!! Clean az. Too many half cocked Hangi vids going round. Top marks!!
I’ve had 2 hangi’s in my life and it is so rewarding. After a lot of time cooking it it definitely pays off and you can taste the pure smokiness, it’s just so different (in a good way) to a normal roast.
There's some awesome people around , ive just seen some. Well done on the hangi skills. Looking at the hole, a second fire one in the hole makes this scene perfect. Bake the dirt seals the oven .
good job people !! put a clean sheet over the food then the wet sacks lay out the sacks how you take them off no hassel but all in all a bloody good job kiaora
Love my Taranaki whanau both Pakeha and Maori. We are all one in the Naki. Its cool as the wairua in Taranaki. Beautiful laid back people just like that Tupuna Maunga there. Love the black rich fertile soil in the Naki. Awesome video re the hangi. Well done guys and gals. Ataahua / beautiful. My mums from Manaia - Manuirirangi whanui. Her marae are Waiokura in Manaia and Oeo in Oeo. I was born in the beautiful fresh clean winter air of the Naki in Hawera July 1961 in the shadows of our Tupuna Maunga. Tangi up every time I see our Tupuna Maunga. Cool vid and awesome looking whanau in it. Thanks for sharing. Kia ora ra.
Hey.The clip of a ordinary European farming family of Taranaki shows you that they live and enjoy different preparations, types and styles of family celebrations. What they have prepared and cooked can feed up to 50 plus people. and done by men giving the ladies time off, a rest period as the the wivies cook all year round for their families and hubby. That's how i was taught. The done better than the plastic Maori's in Australia even back home. Remote areas, that's where the culture is for all people., and not at K Fry or Ronald Mc Donald's Trotters hehe!!
Far out, my mouth is watering after watching that. You fullas nailed it too. Done that a few times by the looks. Ka mau te wehi (awesome) 👌 That looks pretty close to where I grew up in Inglewood.
Yep. Heapsa time and patience goes into preparing a Maori hangi. Spent time in Fiji years back with the opportunity to help the Fiji whanau prepare a lovo. Same method as a hangi except it's cooked above the ground. It was tumeke. Bula vanaka
A beautiful thing.... if you guys get some kind of greens, like cabbage, lay over the heated stones not only to keep meat from being charred or burnt but also to add more steam. All in all, food looked delicious
Awww you made me hungry and homesick to see my maunga Taranaki all at the same time :) Thanks for this THC all day every day!!! from Brissy to Hawera hehehehe
fuck havent had a hangi in years due to my family being useless might try do one down the river or just wait till the next fernral lol this was elite tho cheers big ears
See the bro uses the correct protective footwear while using the chainsaw, (me too 😆), also great to see you're using the best wood including good stones as crap ones explode/break up, bet your Kai is the meanest👍.PS- Your Hungi is exactly how I/we used to do it, (hot getting the stones out of the fire aye). 🥵
Not bad at all. Good size hession too. Just a couple things different l saw was, no Shroud/Sheet. When you finished pulling away the sacks, you could either remove the shroud/sheet then lift or just lift basket out shroud/sheet and all. But it looked nice.
This looks awesome. I would like to try that. Can you tell me how long you left the food cooking in the ground? Is it important what kind of cloth you use? Thanks for the video!
Hi Connie, we heated the rocks for around 3 to 4 hours and then cooking time was about 3.5 hours. We use mutton cloth to hold the food and then old sheets and sacks over the basket before putting the dirt back on. You do need to add some water to get the steam going before you cover it over. You will also need someone watching as the steam builds up pressure and you need to add dirt to trap that in.
Thanks man. We were having this hangi for a friend when he was over from Kenya but he wasn’t able to make it due to something else. I did the video for him so he could get a feel for it. There have been heaps of kiwis comment from overseas so it really must remind them of home. Glad people are enjoying it 👍
the Inca Tupac Yupanqui apparently visited Polynesia or specifically New Zealand In Peru the kitchen with red-hot stones is 5000 years old and is called pachamanca, identical to what is seen in this video would the Incas have brought this to Polynesia?
WHY NOT THE BACK SIDE OF A WIDE HEAVY RAKE? THAT WOULD MOVE THE DIRT AWAY WITH EASE...OR PERHAPS ONE WIDE AND LONG FINAL WET CLOTH TO PILE DIRT ON AND REMOVE BY PICKING UP TWO CORNERS BY ONE BLOKE AND ON THE OTHER TWO CORNERS ANOTHER BLOKE AND LIFT ENTIRE DIRT MOUNDED CLOTH IN UNISON AND STEP ASIDE AND SIMPLY REMOVE THE HEAPS THAT WAY..?
Can tell that it was properly done when there is no steam escaping once you've piled all the dirt on top. Well done guys!
so proud of my people back home im maori but love the way our people cooking a hangi like we have done for hundreds of years.
You made it look so easy that I’m gonna give it a go.
Thanks for the video. Food looks great.

Hello! Beautiful video and experiencia! Please course you answer some questions for me:
- Water is boiled or hot?
- how much time did you cook?
Kia ora Diego. The water is cold, and the hangi was probably cooked for 4 to 6 hours.

If in doubt just don't wear cloths. you should be all good. Just dig your back yard up and light a fire and go for it. good Luck.

Yes but you need to get ones without cracks and that aren't porous otherwise they can explode when they are in the fire as the water inside expands.
