Paul Nielsen - Hey Paul - I’ll be releasing a video on the Lynx this weekend as I’m at CES. Lynx is much much better and well developed. Check out my Instagram “dillonchanvlog” for photos
Dillon Chan I can’t wait! I have been thinking of buying one of those. In fact spoke with UBTech today asking questions. Would love to see mobility, avatar, and security mode, hint hint... have fun at the show and thanks again for the great videos!
Paul Nielsen I highly recommend you do not buy the Ubtech Alpha 2. There is no support of it by Ubtech and it will sell in the range of 2-3000$. The Lynx is available on Amazon and from my opinion pretty awesome but it’s not open source.
Dillon Chan that would be the one I get after talking with UBTech yesterday. I can’t wait to see what you come up with this weekend! Did you see the Buddy robot at the show? If so what did you think?
+Milda Stro unfortunately they are sold out. You should wait for the Lynx which will be much better. Same design, movement but works better. Price around 499-799. This Alpha 2 is open sourced so sells in the upwards $1,500-2500
Impressive hardware. Lacking in software. My AIBO ERS-7 with Mind 3 is from 2005 and makes up for it's now outdated hardware with amazing software. Imagine where SONY would have been now with AIBO and other possible robots if the new CEO at the time didn't shut down the entire robot devision. In all these years the only recent robot that comes somewhat close having a personality is Cozmo. One of the biggest advantages that AIBO and Cozmo share is the impression being alive by anatomous behaviour. And despite the more advanced servos in there AIBO still moves very fast. Especially when autonomous. It looks around, tracks things and especially it's head and neck can turn virtually instantly with almost a jerking motion, making him look alert and alive. He's always doing something. It's nice to see robots are finally slowly uprising in the consumer entertainment sector, but AIBO was way ahead of it's time and still is to it's day. It feels like so much time and progress (years) has been lost and now other companies are playing catch up. Genibo also tried to make a robot dog with sort of anatomous behaviour, but it never reached the charm and realism of AIBO or the more recent Cozmo. This is so vital for consumers who want a robot that feels and acts like a companion right out of the box.
+Pony Fox - Excellent comment and hopefully you're subscribe as I'd love to see more of these comments. I have to agree, the Sony AIBO's were definitely way advance for their years. I've looked online and they are still holding the price and highly valuable. It is my understanding that Sony cut production of the AIBO because they robot cost more to make than they were selling it for? Or maybe people just didn't know the value of the tech and couldn't fork up the money - LOL. I'd love to see a new modern version created - I'm sure they'd rock the market if released. Alpha 2 is quite lame for today's modern day robots in comparison to the AIBO released from 1999 to 2005. You'll see in my latest video of CES that their releasing Lynx at a lower price point. That might be worth it.
Never heard of the Lynx unless I read it in the comments here somewhere. Going to check your CES video on that then. The reason why AIBO ceased production was because AIBO actually branched off from their main robot project: QRIO. It went head to head with HONDA's Asimo robot. AIBO was an experiment to see how it would do on the commercial market and was a great success. Billions and billions went into the robotic department altogether and the new Sony CEO wanted a different strategy for the company at the time by focussing on flat screen TV's and other now popular consumer devices. Although I am not a business person, I still find it a great shame. Especially as you now see robots more and more in uprising.
The Alpha 2 at release started at $499 in an indiegogo campaign then quickly raised to $3000 on the market. The campaign and support immediately died as the company is releasing the Lynx - you can see that in my CES Video. I’ll also be visiting CES next week and will Post more videos
What software version was alpha running in this demo? Mine understands hello alpha, tell me a story .... and not much else. I'm wondering if it's an older firmware. Any info would be appreciated.
Oh yeah that's worth $1,000 it's the entertainment of that ain't going to wear off in an hour at most those loud motors ain't going to get annoying you're a genius buddy for buying this thing
Originally when released in Indiegogo it was $499, once the robot was launched the price jumped to $2799-3400. Now you can find a lynx for $799 on Amazon but it’s closed sources. Alpha 2 was an open source bot and didn’t do what UBTECH promised.
+Tom Göpfert - Best place right now would be eBay. BUT I don't recommend you buy the Alpha 2 though. If you don't care so much about programming but want the robot and its functionality - check out my video on CES as I show Lynx - Ubtech will be releasing Lynx soon for $799 and integrates with Amazon Alexa. As for the "Alpha 2" the features rarely work. You can search on Indiegogo.com and read all the frustrated comments from backers. Anyways Lynx at $799 will be consumer base and launched this year on Amazon. Once released, I'll likely have a review.
Dillon Chan Hello, hoping you can help me. Mine stopped connecting to WiFi after latest update. Now I cannot get it to scan the QR code...I’ve tried everything with no luck? Any advice? Can it be done without manually without having to scan? Thanks
+MUNDO DOS GAMES they are no longer selling them. Best bet is eBay. Subscribe to my vlog and watch my day 3 update. You'll see a new version coming soon.
That's exactly what it is. The company that made it is Chinese and its a load cheaper than Nao. This robot is worth my whole year's budget of tampons, and I use a Diva cup...
They are no longer for sale. Started around $499 on Indiegogo and once the product hit market they sold for around 2400-3000. You can find the lynx which is a closed source for around $799. Alpha 2 was open source.
+Pedro R7 Hey - Ubtech stop production of the Alpha 2 (open source). They will be releasing the LYNX (closed source) by mid year which will integrate Amazon Alexa. Check out my vlog in CES 2017 for a view of the LYNX. Lynx will cost around $799 on release. Time 12:43 - ua-cam.com/video/dth6jSVTsw4/v-deo.html Alpha 2 can be found on eBay by many sellers looking to get rid of it. Prices will range from $1000-2999. All the same item, but look out for v4.1 is the latest Cheers Once Lynx is released, I'll do an unboxing + another robot I will be receiving hopefully by mid August to ensure you're subscribed.
Even if they re-release with Alexa - given that Alexa is free now why bother. It means that their AI failed which is what they were truly trying to sell and since you can put Alexa on a Raspberry Pi the same thing is available for about $50.
That is one expensive children's toy that is pretty dang useless. It certainly can't do what the pitch video had claimed. No surprises there though. Glad you're happy with it though.
Lol the volume controls. When the bot starts screaming about the agony of being alive you can pet its head and go "shhh" and it quiets down against its will
worth $99,,, not a cent more,,,, heaps of free software out there does the same thing for (( FREE )).... the only difference is some servos and plastic,,,, lol
+ANGIE TAN NAO is a similar robot - the servos, and backend engine is worth more than $99. Yes the software sucks and I totally agree but know robots and what they cost this was priced right.
Looks similar but nothing like NAO beyond that. For some reason the won’t sell nao to the public anymore. Wish they would and drop the price to say 1500 then they’d sell

Whats good about a dancing robot that can tell stories?

Sony reopened the robot division and we should be hearing soon what the new robot will be

can it work without internet
+Aaqib Yaseen Hi - yes the Alpha can work in basic mode without a network connection. It might annoy you by noting it's not connected to the network.
