in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Jimi Hendrix was asked, “How does it feel to be the greatest guitarist in the world?" He is believed to have answered, “I don’t know, go ask Rory Gallagher ” I think it was not just a compliment

@@ML-uh2nk That quote has never been verified unfortunately as there is no real evidence of him ever saying it, it has actually become a bit of an urban myth. I've seen all varieties ranging from it being Clapton saying ask Prince or Jeff Beck etc. But there is no doubt that Rory was and is a guitarists guitarist and easily one of the best blues guitarists of all time

What a great slide guitarist he was on top of his other skills. Mum enjoyed it as well, whose usual fare would be more traditional like the Dubliners etc. vive Ruari! Rory was of a rare breed. He was a real man & stood strong for what he believed. He didn't get radio airplay here in US because he had been in the business since 15 yrs old & learned quickly how record industry manipulated bands & wanted no part of it. We still knew him, loved him, realized his genius & attended his shows. Back then most of promotion of bands & records was done over the radio. Then it took off from there. But believe me, if u ever saw him, & I did, nothing could ever make u forget him!

As an old desert rat of a kid in high school north of Tucson, Arizona in the early-70's....one of my earliest vinyls was Rory. Can't remember it's name, but I wore it out. Then an old girlfriend got ahold of it......zip.......it was long gone. So....Rory came thru live at our new Community Center and I bought a ticket. Can't remember the other 2 bands with him. Anyhow, the guy who was to pick me up....my best buddy, who was always late for everything.....did it again, and came by really late. The 45 min. drive to the other side of Tucson to the concert I was biting my nails and screaming at him to haul ass. Long story shortened....I walked into the concert while Rory was doing his LAST tune. I saw him for about 2 mins......that was IT. Boy was I a pissed off ticket-holder. But what could I do? Nuttin. Nuttin' at all.

Ths guy right here really had it! i put him in may favorites right up there with both of the jimmy's, SRV and a few others. Its the feel and soul in the playing that gets me more than just raw technical ability. Its hard to get bored hearing him play. UNLIKE some of the proclaimed best out there.

Fraudulently altered the birthdate on our learner's license to see Rory, Rod, Gerry & Lou. After the 1st song we stood up and clapped. Rory looked over, smiled and nodded a thank you to our table of 17 year olds in the front. Humble, genuine & a great, underappreciated musician.

iconic performance by Rory - he's just at one with his Strat . .. just pure unconcious com;petence ,. from @6.10 ' in just makes my hairs stand on end such a humble guy too and who knows when to step back and let his band shine on .

Saw him twice in one weekend. Newcastle City Hall on the Friday, saw my team Sunderland win at Blackpool on the Saturday then Rory at Sunderland Empire on the Sunday. If the Good Lord had wanted to take me after that I think I would’ve gone.

Had the privelige to see Rory at the Royal Albert Hall . Even had a posh box and Rory blew us away with his wonderful skill and after numerous encores at the end of a brilliant evening he finished by saying he hoped we liked it !!!
I love him and miss him dearly.

Rory remains one of my favourites and this track in particular. When the credits rolled at the end of the video, I noticed Duncan Browne was one of this shows guests, I had never heard of Duncan but thought, if he is on OGWT he would be worth a look. Turns out he was great and if you’ve not heard him and like Nick Drake-esque singer songwriters then his performance from this particular OGWT it’s available here on UA-cam.
