I saw a few people wearing the gray Brooklyn sleeved jerseys (yup, the Nets of all teams) back at the time. Honestly I look at it as a valid attempt to make it socially acceptable to wear basketball jerseys outside of game-watching settings again.
@@packrunnerjohnny by no motive you mean they change them every year to maximize profits and jersey sales. also why they only let teams in almost all major sports have 4-5 uniforms max
Can’t represent all Celtics fans but those Grey jerseys definitely remind me of IT. It was kind of a pressure-free time. Definitely was fun, but in a much different way than these days. (Except 2014)
For mer, what bugs me about the sleeve jerseys is that the sleeves are very plain and added a lot of empty space. If they added some sort of piping or additional designs onto the sleeves similar to baseball jerseys, it would probably be looked at a bit more fondly.
The Westbrook one in the thumbnail shows that OKC put jersey numbers on their sleeves, but honestly, I would have liked piping or colors better, because you know those numbers are coming off in the wash.
Literally, nobody remembers what jerseys they were wearing and it should stay that way. Those unis were horrendous and it’s no coincidence that Nike took over not long after
@@selfishstockton6123That’s not true. The current black Cavaliers jerseys are a blatant reference to the sleeved jerseys the Cavs won the Championship while wearing.
The Rockets Grey one, the pattern isn't a checked flag. It's the tracking pattern found on NASA's rockets, which is even more fitting for them. It's what pattern they would use to tell the position of the craft during takeoff, which for a basketball jersey? *chefs kiss*
Jeremy Lin not just waving Kobe off, but getting him to set a screen to free him from the clamps of... JJ Redick. Anyway, didn't hate the sleeve era, but they needed to get those things tailored better for the players. Once you get used to shooting in them, it's fine, but the first few times you feel fabric mid-shot it gets in your head.
That's it right on the money, the fit was absolutely the issue. If they'd have fit like tees instead of compression shirts then I think most players would have felt more comfortable in them.
It’s not the fact they looked bad it’s more it just never felt right. All the games I watched with sleeved jerseys felt like both teams forgot to take off their warmups
I think he said he still is at SB while doing this, which is dope. When I first saw his vids I thought it meant he got fired.. Although he may have said it in an older video and NOW isn’t with them anymore
Thank God you said for the most part because then you have Boston who has had the same jersey since like the 70s with only the sponsors now making a difference
Really enjoyed the bits where you showed highlights in the sleeved jerseys. Would have loved to see the top highlight or highlights from every team in sleeves. Not sure how accessible exhaustive per jersey (for lack of a better term) stats and game logs are. Anyway, dig the content! Thanks for making it!
i enjoyed the sleeve jersey era as they reminded me of rugby and football jerseys just a lot tighter on the players, we as fans got some really iconic moments and great games during that time. some def needed a redesign or colourway as they just looked bad. i think for some players especially more bigger wings they could of had their jerseys to be more tailor fitted to allow for better range of motion and fit feel. i do remember a lot of the talking points also being that they are only there to be used as ad space in the future which is ironic as when switched to nike they put on ads and no one said anything.
I always loved that era of jerseys n I really wish the NBA n Nike would do a version more player friendly as in fit n different shirt sizes. Also wish NBA 2K showed more loved to all the sleeved jerseys during that era.
Nothing shows the power of nostalgia more than the takes that have come from these jerseys the last few years. I’ve seen people saying that the sleeved jerseys are a better idea than the current city jersey system and it just boggles my mind because they are not even close
Note on the Cavs jersey - The team had someone tailor the sleeves after LeBron ripped them to make them loose sleeves going forward for those it bothered
My first thought when I see you is that they feel a little bare. That's probably a combination of the minimalist logo designs commonly used plus not having any kind of stripes around the sleeves or arm holes. Just move those stripes down to the arm holes and it would look better already. It just feels inconsistent when you have trim around the neck but not the sleeves.
Hated them at the time but I'm like comically nostalgic for them now. I think partially because I have such fond memories of the Christmas games from that era. I still absolutely love the NBA now but I feel like the jersey/uniform game has fallen hard in the 2020s.
I partially agree with the ‘wearing sleeve jerseys to games’ theory, but I actually think the NBA wanted people to wear them in public. I’ve never seen an NBA jersey worn on its own outside of any basketball environment. I think the NBA wanted people to wear the sleeve jerseys in their day-to-day lives as like a casual shirt.
I'm starting to see it a lot more outside of basketball environments. 2000s fashion is coming back into style, and baggy sports jerseys were a big part of that era. With that said I don't think I've ever seen someone wearing a 2010s sleeved jersey in public.
College campuses in the 2010s had tons of jerseys… all of the NBA jerseys I saw in undergrad (that weren’t modern Knicks jerseys bc I went to school in NYC) were throwbacks to the 90s. Hornets, Raptors, Pistons teal, Sixers. The sleeve jerseys were not popular at all with the target demographic at the time. Like Kofie said in the video, I just rock my NBA jerseys over hoodies to Pelicans games now because it’s freezing in the arena whose first tenant was a minor league hockey team
They were everywhere in the 90's, heck I had MJ's Dream Team, Space Jam, and Bulls jerseys as a kid that I wore in public all the time, and I wasn't even a huge basketball fan, but I can count on one hand without running out of fingers the times I've seen someone wearing a jersey without being in a basketball environment since the mid 2000's. And yeah, I've never seen a sleeve jersey worn in public.
As a Louisville Fan the weird combination of jersey brands implementing short sleeves on jerseys matched with the over usage of infared colorways meant Louisville spent the 2013 post season in the most atrocious looking uniforms I've seen them wear -- so I guess the only silver lining to the NCAA saying Louisville's 2013 season never happened is that they are attempting to erase those jerseys from the history books too. The infared red color was literally construction worker/syracuse orange.
21:59 BWAHAHA!! I'm a Raptors fan and I had completely blocked this out of my memory! I was watching the whole video 100% confident like "I'm glad the Raptors never wore a sleeved jersey" and then you reminded me of this monstrosity. Thank you Kofie... The Raptors should never wear green.
Sleeved jersey's were worn back in the day by mens & women's teams during the plumber era, i remember it being brought up when they were first introduced in 2013, with GSW being the first team to wear the adidas ones as they were the first to wear sleeved jerseys in the 50's
Other gripe with the sleeved jerseys, it was just blank space that detracted from the typical elements and curves of nba jerseys. They often looked incomplete or uninspired. In hindsight it felt like indoor soccer league stuff.
Thanks for making me remember the sleeved jersey fad again, that completely left my mind. And less thanks as a Celtics fan for making me remember Jared sullinger

Huge John wall and wizards fan at the time, and he looked SO dope in their sleeved red bullets jerseys. They had this cool asymmetrical two color stripe pattern that ran from one side of the top down across the body to the other side of the shorts. I loved that look so much. I think your opinion on the sleeved jersey era depends on your perspective. Are you judging based on how YOU will look if you buy the jersey? Or how your favorite player looked in them? I think Wall, Westbrook, Bron, Kyrie, and steph all looked so insanely dope. Does anyone remember Russ in 16/17 in the thunder all white sleeved fit with the white leg sleeves and arm sleeves! My gosh, that was personally so fire. But idk I think I always loved uniforms that had more to them, whether thats sleeves or full catchers gear or even storm trooper armor lol.

I think the NBA/Nike should just make 2 versions of each jersey design one sleeved and one classic. Players like Norman Powell, Anthony Davis, Chris Paul and Derrick Jones Jr. always wear shirts underneath and it would be cool to have that alternative for players to round out the look. Also for fans that dont wont to wear just jerseys

In retrospect, these jerseys were iconic but ahead of their time due to poor execution. I think they should've just done short sleeved versions of existing designs-sort of like how in soccer there's both a short sleeve and long sleeve version of the same jersey. They could then allow the players to choose which one they'd prefer. Someone like Anthony Davis would almost certainly opt for a short sleeved jersey (assuming they fit properly). Then, they NBA could push the short sleeve version harder in retail and I think fan adoption would be higher.
I liked the sleeved shirts just by looks, but then again I've always gone in favour of sleeved shirts no matter the sport (eg I am not a fan of sleeveless volleyball jerseys at all). To me they didn't do a lot of great design with it. I think one of my favourite things about these videos is the 'Hold up, is that [NBA Player]?'
the weird thing is, the shir-sey (jerseys but just printed on a cotton tshirt) already existed. Yes its not exactly a jersey, the players arent wearing them, but the sleeved jerseys were those made with a less practical material for day to day wear. Alos the designs of most of the sleeved jerseys were terrible. They went for something that was really minimalistic. Like too minimalistic. It looked weird after decades of players wearing sleeveless jerseys
I never found them comfortable. I have the fan RipCity one and the sleeves dig into your arms, even though the rest of the jersey feels fine. My biggest issue with them has nothing to do with the jersey itself. But as a fan I want to wear the jersey I see on the court/rink/field. I can layer just fine with a traditional NBA jersey, or NFL,NHL, Soccer, etc.
i always thought the sleeved jerseys looked like training gear and/or pajamas lol. never liked them. if they weren’t skin tight i think i might have liked them more if they were more like polo tees
I like sleeve Jerseys whether I’m playing in one or I see one in the wild. Granted the sleeves are too tight in the shoulders so ideally if they do make a new shirt jersey they need to make the sleeves shorter like it should look like a rugby jersey or modern football jerseys.
I have literally never seen a fan wearing these jerseys
