- This was the beginning of my road trick with Jeremy and Erica Yoder of @MadScientistBBQ. We also met with our friend, Brad of @ChudsBbq. There was a lot of fun to be had being on the road as we make our way to Kansas City to bring some Texas BBQ to another bbq loving city! But before we start cooking for others, we wanted to make sure we get our fill of barbecue first. Hope you enjoy this video as others to come from this trip!
We were headed back to Austin from SA that same Sat morning as it was our last day in TX. We were divided between Salt lick & Valentinas. We chose Valentina’s. I think I made the right choice.
You made the right choice. If I had to choose between the 2.
@@knoxavebbq I was first introduced to “queso” last month and I wasn’t really impressed at first but “when in Rome” I had to keep trying it. Valentina’s had the best queso. It made me a believer! Lol
@@BBQ_Beto queso is life in Texas 🤠
@@DerbyBandit that’s what I hear. It’s queso and flour tortillas. Here in Chicago it’s queso fundido and corn tortillas.
@@BBQ_Beto yezzir. That can be said about West Texas. Texas is weird and has its certain Mexicans who favor one way over the other 🤣…I’m a South Tx Hispanic so it’s Taco!…come to west Tx and it’s Burritos 🤣🤣🤣🚮
What a fun video. Thanks for sharing your experiences!
Thank you for watching!
Salt Lick was my first experience with real Texas barbecue (back in the 1990s). My future from that point on always pointed toward bringing that taste to the KC area. So I am opening my first Mule Kicker BBQ in Warrensburg, Missouri. Crazy times, but you, Jeremy, Matt at Meat Church and a couple of others are keeping me sane. Tell Jeremy to stop by when he's in KC next week!
We’ve already finished our trip. Sorry we missed you.
You should check out Chuds bbq on UA-cam too!
You make me so sad that the bbq we have in the frozen north can’t compare. This was an awesome video, keep crushing it!
That’s how I felt in Chicago which is why I started cooking my own. Haha.
That’s awesome you and your wife get to do this together. My wife is the camera woman also for our videos. I’ve always said that BBQ is love, keep up the great work!
I’m guessing you meant to send this to Jeremy. Lol! But yes, Erica is great. She’s very important to their team.
😁👍
@@knoxavebbq yes, lol. You guys are an awesome team, you should swing by AZ to try some BBQ, would be great to meet you all. Just subscribed to your channel, have a great weekend!
Salt Lick was my first BBQ in Texas. I think its the best in Texas. Blacks and Franklin are great as well, but Salt Lick is cut above. I wish I lived closer so I could enjoy it more.
Glad you enjoyed it! Idk if it’s the best, but I throughly enjoyed because it was different. Thanks for watching!
Great collab. So fun to watch
Appreciate you watching!
Hi Joe, I've been subscribed to your channel for a while now. Your content is excellent and the road trip with Jeremy was great. I've learn quite a lot from you guys. All the best!
Thank you. I appreciate it! Hope you enjoy the other videos that’ll be coming up soon.
Made Evan’s take on the sauce, and now I’m hooked. Thanks for the great video!
Thanks. Hope you got the bell notification on for future videos!
That place is on my bucket list, much moreso than Franklin's even!
It’s not the best bbq, but it is a different vibe than all the others. I would happily go again. Franklin is great too.
@@knoxavebbq - do you think that’s because so spoiled with great bbq (especially guys like you and Jeremy) or maybe just that we prefer certain flavors/seasoning? Or were there truly fundamental things wrong with it that could be improved? Do you feel like at some of these places that maybe you could have hit it at a bad time, or should we expect that there should a certain level of consistency regardless? I always drool when I see shots of that place (like in the thumbnail) just a big grill with a pile of fantastic looking meat!
@@doplinger1 im not really comparing this place to places you've seen me going to before. while the cuts of meat remain the same, the style of cooking is different and alot of use of sauce.
so i wouldn't be able to say that what they do it "wrong". it's different that what we now perceive to be the "right" way. i truly enjoy just doing to another place that has another offering. the only time i'm in a mood to compare is if someone say they're trying to do a certain type of bbq, but better. but as you saw from this video, i'm just bbq loving guy who just wanted to have a good time and meal, and i got just that.
came across the Salt Lick by chance on a trip to Texas, and while I was lucky enough to eat at some of the most highly rated places from Dallas to San Antonio, the Salt Lick remains my favourite. And as much as anything else it was the service and the atmosphere that made me fall in love with it. It just felt very genuine and welcoming. Can't wait to travel across to the otherside of the world one day and go back!
it's a fun spot. i'd go again.
The BBQ isn't anything special, but it's more the atmosphere
I've been to Salt Lick a number of times and the only meats I personally feel are really good there are the Sausage and the Beef Ribs. Love the bread too and the sauce is really growing on me. Living in Texas, I can easily find the sauce when I want it as I don't leave near either of the Salt Lick locations.
It’s not the best. It’s not the worst. I knew what I was getting into and it delivered where I wanted to. Haha. I had a great time
I loved the style of this video so much!! Great job. Hopefully Joseph S. Yim appears in the next one.
I don’t think I have any footage of S haha.
Love what you doing guys...keep putting out that great content...I follow all 4 of you guys...my go to for everything. 🙏🏼
Appreciate you watching!
I would love a video from one of you guys on Salt Lick’s cooking process. Because it is very unique. They smoke it, store it, then finish it off on their huge pit and mop it. I don’t know if they mop on the smoker too or not. It’s a very unique and interesting way of smoking brisket.
I’d just be curious on thoughts and opinions on mopping brisket alone. We don’t get a lot of in depth UA-cam content on the Carolina style of BBQ.
I’ve been to Salt Lick in Round Rock and thought it was really good. This was before I knew much about bbq. Would like to try the original location too.
I’ve been thinking about so I’ll see what I can do after I do some more research!
Looked like a great time. Thanks for taking us along😊
Thanks for watching as always!
Looking forward to the videos from the trip! Haven't had KC BBQ in a long time and my recollection was that it was very sweet in the past, so will be interested to see what you and Jeremy think of the food there.
We will let you know. Haha.
The food looked awesome. Cheers! ✌️
Honestly it wasn’t the best bbq I’ve had, but I loved the experience! Thanks for watching!
Ha! Got to see the finished version of Bradley’s finished reverse flow offset!
Didn’t get to cook on it, but sure Brad it on it. Haha
Dang that was short lol I wanted more! Looks like you guys had a blast!
Lol! I’m sorry. There’s more to come I promise. Jeremy will also post a full review video of salt lick. We went back to do a proper review
@@knoxavebbq can’t wait brother!
lol... Ya'll crack me up! Like you, The intoxicated Me would be the Only time I'd Ever go to Chile's! Not for Anything, but especially not for BBQ! Cheers fellas. :D
It was a good time! Haha
Great video, definitely a spot that has been on my list to try for a while.
Not the best bbq, but it’s fun and iconic for a reason.
Love the Vlog style. Great vid
Appreciate it! Yea, I like mixing it up! Hope you got the bell notifications on to know when the next videos comes out!
Hahaha ok I just laughed out loud at 6:08 😂
Do you remember me doing this at all?
@@knoxavebbq No! haha but there was a table full of people on that side of us so maybe they were looking at you?
@@ericaandjeremy yea i remember them too, but i'm not sure why i would do that. LOL
The atmosphere at Salt Lick is good. The BBQ is just ok at best.
Yup. But it’s ok. I’d still happily go back
Nice video, hopefully they let you do a full tour video someday, looks like a pretty cool place. So their iconic looking circular stone grill. They just use that to finish and smoke the meats on something else?
Thanks for watching. I believe so. I don’t know for sure, but that’s what I’ve heard.
H‑E‑B has the salt bbq sauce, best ever. We had our wedding reception at the salt lick 16 years ago. Every year we go back.
Super cool! Thanks for watching
@@knoxavebbq but the craziest thing was we never went their prior, we saw I think Rachel ray on the food network and we were going man that’s too cool. So the first time we went was our wedding reception. But we went a week or two ago and I was not super happy with the ribs. As someone who does ribs on a regular basis.
Haha I love that you guys went to Chili's, love the Chef clip.......Salt Lick didn't impress.
I wasn’t expecting it to be great, but I had a great time. I’d go back again.
i love the new age BBQ culture
Trust me. So do I. I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing if I didn’t. Haha. But you gotta pay respect to those who came before you.
My favorite thing at Salt Lick is their potatoes (everything else is good too), but they just hit different.
Nice. I need to try it next time I got
Awesome!
It was a good time. Can’t wait to share more of the trip!
Triple chop ftw
Joe, which Buc'ees you and Jeremy stopped at? What town in Texas was it? Thanks!
i couldn't tell ya. all i know is we were on our way from austin to dallas
Saltlick is good. The beef rib is their best offering for sure. The sausage is good, very standard flavor
I enjoyed it! It was nice to have something different
@Joe Yim the best is watching them slice up the jiggly brisket right out of the pit
The best thing at Salt Lick is the beef ribs, when I had it like 5yrs ago. Everything else was just ok
that's what everyone has been saying. guess i'll have to go back again!
Salt Lick was one of my favorite places to go to. Not for the bbq (because its just ok) but for the atmosphere. I went back in March and the bbq was not even ok anymore it was horrible and the atmosphere wasn't good either. I will probably not be back again
That’s a shame. I enjoyed it
I got into bbq after i moved from missouri. Ill have to check out a slew of places next time im back. Looks good and its probably best to know not to expect texas style, but it is sad when a place might advertise as it and its not
It’s definitely different for sure.
Yall Enjoy Life 😎
It was a good time. Thanks for watching. More to come though!
@@knoxavebbq Hey Joe Makes Some Is content about people smokers setups Thanks 😎
Stop and get some F5 Beer when you pass through Oklahoma.
Bummer. I wish I had known. The trip is already over for me.
@@knoxavebbq bummer
👍
👍
Native Austinite here. Salt Lick was significantly better years ago before they built the addition to feed the masses. Now, it's just commoditized generic BBQ designed for tourists.
yup. and i thoroughly enjoyed it. haha.
The infamous pit
Yup. It was cool. Haha
It doesn't look like Slat Lick was that good overall. I saw alot of should shrugging.
Ppl read into our reactions way too much. Haha. Of course it’s not as good as all these great craft bbq places, but it doesn’t mean places like this dont have their place. I thoroughly enjoyed it for what it was and I’d happy go again. I don’t like how jaded everyone has become. Not everything is gonna be the best. Not everything has to be over analyzed and ranked.
And I’m not just saying this to you. You just happen to be like the 100th person to say the same thing. Haha.
I hate to say this buy Salt Lick looks way better than it tastes.
It does, but it live up to my expectations of what I thought it would be. So I had a great time there.
The dirty lens is killing me.
Yeaaa me too. Haha thanks for watching!
I didn't love salt lick when I visited. It was good! But we had better
Same, but I wasn’t comparing salt lick to other craft bbq I’ve had. I was just thinking whether or not it was different and worth going to as a bbq lover. I would say yes! It’s fun and inviting and an easy place to bring a bunch of ppl for a good time.
