    I recently read Death of The Family...dude. The Joker was beyond insane in that one. No one, not even Batman or Harley Quinn recognized him by this point because of how crazy he has gotten. Batman's fear of him in this comic was so palpable.

    When I was young watching animated Batman cartoons like The Batman and Batman The Animated Series, it was very obvious to me that joker was the main villain. The Joker instilled the idea into me that the villain was always the polar opposite of the hero. The Joker was always smilling, 'light hearted', brighly dressed and pure evil. Whereas Batman was always unhappy, serious, dressed in dark and pure good. They are the perfect hero and villain counter parts.

    the jokers full (and widely accepted) origin story
    a failed comedian and his pregnant wife struggled to make ends meet.
    the comedian had always prided himself on being a law abiding citizen but as the bills were piling up he saw no other option than robbery to pay for his wife's hospital fees.
    he dressed up as the red hood in order to protect his identity.
    during the robbery one thing lead to another which ended with batman accidentally throwing him into a vat of acid
    [now most versions of the jokers origin story depict his wife dying here, but that happens later]
    the comedian managed to survive his bath in the acid but this left his skin bleached. when the comedian next saw his wife, while she was initially scared she still loved him and managed to see past his looks.
    [there's a gap here where I can't work out cannon from... non-cannon? anyway some time passes and then]
    during another robbery a police officer impersonating batman interfered and shot the comedian in the face, the bullet went through one cheek and straight out the other, and split his lips so that his mouth opened at the bullet hole. he was taken to the hospital but the surgery was botched, leaving the comedian with a Chelsea grin scar.
    whilst in hospital the comedian was told his wife had gone into labour and unfortunately that neither her nor their son survived.
    the comedian immediately started to cry.
    but soon his cries turned into laugher
    this also explains why he turned Harvey dent into two-face; he wanted to prove that given the right circumstances anyone, no matter how noble, would fall

      Most of that first part came from the Killing Joke (which again joker even says in that comic that it might not be his actually origin) but I have never heard of any of that other stuff you mentioned. The Joker being shot by the cop/batman imposter was something that happened in Grant Morrison's run leading up to Batman RIP, Joker was shot through the jaw and out the forehead (his grim was the result of the chemicals.) The only time I recall a bullet causing the smile was in Batman 89. But I have never heard of any version where he went from the the implied origin from the Killing Joke to return to his wife. Regardless the current canon in the Nu52 is that he was an already sadistic and cunning criminal master mind as the red hood before getting an acid dunk.

      My idea was that a stray batarang sliced the joker's mouth and gave him the iconic scars, it's never really been done, but it feels kind of cool.

    • @Sweety-ts4re
      @Sweety-ts4re 5 років тому +1

      @@stanleysmooth This happen in the Comic "Lovers and Madmen". In this Story a criminal, named Jack, is bored by the typical criminal acts. At a robbery Batman interferes and from there on, Joker gets obsess to challenge Batman. He kidnaps Bruce’s actual girlfriend, so Batman throws in a fight his batarangs and spliced Jack's cheeks. So he gets in this story his smile. But it goes even further. Jack himself gets kidnapped by his gangster buddy's. They beat him up at Ace Chemicals (because of Jack's actions, Batman is after them). He tries to escape and one gangster starts shooting with his gun. A chemical vat, that hangs above Jack, gets hit by the bullets. So he get a chemical shower. His skin becomes after that white, his hair green.
      There are many origins. In the first one ever created, Joker reveals, that he was the red hood. After he gets attacked by Batman at Ace Chemicals, he jumped in a chemical vat (because his helmet allowed him to breath under water). When he arrived at home, he saw his face in a mirror and started laughing.
      Another origin, is the one from "Tim Burton's Batman".
      I also read an origin, in which Joker gots, in his childhood, every day some bleaching creme on his skin by his mother or auntie.
      I think I will really like the origin of the "Joker" film. It tooks the unlucky man, who always fails in his life from "The killing Joke" + he has already a mental illness. But it fully breaks out after the society done to much to him

    I actually have some type of sympathy for the joker. It isn't that he was a criminal from an early age like most of batman's villains. He just, in his words, had that "one bad day" that drove him to madness. The only thing that kept him alive for so long, I believe, was batman. It gave him someone who can understand him because once you remove the idea of good and evil they are both men who were driven to insanity

      Naaaaaah. Joker is definitely one of the greateset villains of all time although I woud not say he's the greatest. He usually deserves to be in a Top 10 list but he should never be ranked #1. The highest ranking I would give him is #3. The reason why I say that is because there was so many times when Batman had the oppurtunity to kill Joker. However, due to Batman's sense of morality, he refuses to do it and lets him live. Lame.

    • @-Floydimus

      jonn mace as far as I know batman doesn't kill joker is because if he kills him then joker wins (according to joker where he wants to prove that no one is pure even the batman) and just to not let him win he doesn't kill the joker. So I think Joker deserves No. 1 position.

    I love the joker in Flashpoint Paradox. It's not really canon, but in that universe, on that faithful night in Crime alley, Bruce is the one who is killed. His father, Thomas Wayne kicks the guys ass and his Mother goes insane with hysteria becoming the Joker. His father becomes a ruthless version of Batman and uses guns and hand to hand to fight. You only really see the joker once in the movie, but I really like the idea.

    One thing I would love to see in all actuality is Joker being turned loose in the Marvel universe. I can hear the groans already but let me plead my case before you curse me. I think Joker turned loose would be such an epic and completely unhinging event for the heroes at large in the Marvel universe because they have never ran across a villain like him. I am a lover of both DC and Marvel, with my favorite heroes being Flash, Batman, Green Lantern, Hulk and Spider-Man. So I hold no biases or prejudices. But I think not even Cletus Cassidy was as bad as the Joker. Give the Joker time and a hero to focus on like say Tony Stark or Peter Parker or hell even have him poke the bear with Frank Castle or just the Marvel heroes as a whole and I think he could whip up something that would scar them for years to come. What do you think? Please be civil. 😃

    • @agentleman4610
      @agentleman4610 8 років тому +11

      The thing about Joker and Deadpool that none of the other villains can even touch is their random insanity. I mean, both do things just to do them. For Joker it's simply to cause chaos and "have fun". Deadpool because well he knows exactly what he is and therefore doesn't care (too much). Where Deadpool does differ however is that Deadpool has never done anything near the scope of the Joker simply for giggles or to prove an inconsequential point. Deadpool has almost always killed in order to complete an objective. Joker kills whenever he wants and whoever he wants sometimes for merely existing in the same room as him. The only people he refuses to kill are Harley and Batman. Now if he were let off the leash in the Marvel universe should he just go after the Marvel heroes as a whole or a specific hero and if a specific hero what hero?

    Um....did anyone else notice that this backstory is also given when playing as the joker in Arkum origins? Well, except for the wife - dying part. But I expected something traumatic happened to him. It shows him as the red hood though, and the bat pushing him into a green swirling vat. I'm assuming thats the acid stuff. This makes so much sence now.... Which is why he likes batman so much. Bruce lost his parents, and the Joker feels he is the only person that understands his pain...that under different circumstances, he could have turned out the same as the joker.

    Here's a fanfic I just thought of watching this video. Maybe... the Joker is the guy who shot Batman's parents son. The shooter, just a random non-evil desperate thief, turned to a life of crime due to poverty. Seeing young Bruce the shooter felt a pang of guilt, explaining why he left him alive to begin with, then do to a psychological collapse, took that anger and shame out on his son through a brutal childhood of torture and mental abuse, who would then become the Joker. The Joker hating Batman and Bruce Wayne respectively for making his life harder and reminding him of the (in the Joker's mind) privileged life that Bruce has with no abusive parents and a vast fortune (such as Bruce's other childhood friend Tommy's envy)... also the Joker could think of it as his father actually allowed Bruce to have all of this by not killing him therefor perhaps leaving the Joker feeling that his father actually provided more for Bruce than him. The Joker then hating Batman want's to see him suffer the only revenge that would fit him... becoming a murderer like the Joker's father had to which ruined his and the Joker's life. Also he is enigmatic because he feels who he is doesn't matter. He encompasses all of the villains of the Batman universe. Which is why he just want's to watch the world burn :)

    Great video 👍🏼 one thing though:
    I would argue that The Joker absolutely has rhyme and reason for living the way he does. Honestly that may make people see me as a little crazy too but I can’t do much about it. As twisted as he can be sometimes I think he makes stellar points 😤

  • @rajvader
    @rajvader 11 років тому +4

    Y'all want a comic book culture shock, compare the original Joker/Red Hood origin story from the '50s with the Killing Joke version of the '80s. Both tell the story of a fairly ordinary criminal in a red hood jumping into a chemical wash to escape Batman and becoming the Joker as a result. But the tone change is extreme.
    (For starters, can you imagine the '80s Batman hanging around in broad daylight, teaching a class in criminology?)

    • @rajvader
      @rajvader 11 років тому +1

      *****
      It's been a while since I've looked at the issue, but I recall that the 1950's version starts with Batman & Robin teaching a university class in criminology. (Yeah. At that point in the Silver Age, the "Dark Knight" was strolling around college campuses in broad daylight, effectively a recognized special police officer. Kinda' like in the Adam West TV series, where the Batmobile routinely rolls-up at City Hall so our heroes can jog in through the front door.) Batman decided to review the unsolved case of the Red Hood with the class, which ultimately revealed that the Red Hood became the Joker.
      The 1980s version has Batman realizing that he and the Joker are locked in a fatal relationship, and trying to find a way to break the cycle... While the Joker decides that everyone is *one bad day* away from being as crazy as he is, and tries to prove it by breaking Commissioner Gordon by torturing/crippling Barbara Gordon... All the while remembering the Red Hood story as the *one bad day* that made him what he was.

    • @rajvader
      @rajvader 11 років тому +8

      On the contrary, The Killing Joke was treated as canon from the start. It is where Barbara Gordon got shot and made paraplegic, and the events of TKJ were referenced in the regular series comics.

    • @WednesdaysSerial
      @WednesdaysSerial 11 років тому

      rajvader Ya and AOA started that way and it blew up and got worked into the cannon. That doesn't make sense then. But if that's actually Bat cannon there's a number of details that don't add up, sure there's small ones but the major one isn't that the Joker comes back from a death, but from Batman actively trying to kill or cripple him.

    See, I like the Joker but I'm more a fan of him when he's actually not the main villain of the story or at least not starting as one.
    With his representation of chaos he almost seems like a plot device to me that can fuck up the entire plot line just because you don't know what he's about to do next. He might be turning on his own allies or something else.
    I'm essentially thinking of storys like "Batman R.I.P." but also stuff like "Mask of the Phantasm" would fall into this category.

  • @CheshireCesare

    This is pretty cool! I know this is *super* late, but just a note, it's actually Conrad "Veidt", not "Vendetti".. :) I love old German expressionist films, and the first time I saw him in a still of The Man Who Laughs I immediately thought, "I know the Joker is probably connected to this somehow!" That makeup was truly terrifying lol (ironically, since the character of Gwynplaine was the opposite of villainous; he was actually really gentle and kind).
    Looking forward to more of these shorts, keep up the great work!

    • @cha5
      @cha5 10 років тому

      I'd have to respectfully disagree with the man,
      My contention would be that no post 'The Killing Joke' story can really measure up to it as far as Joker stories go,
      Not that there haven't been some great ones ranging from Grant Morrison's Arkham Asylum, to Bruce Timm & Paul Dini's Mad Love, Just none IMHO that ever had the same impact as TKJ.
      And IMHO the worst thing Moore has written would have to be his Kool Aid Man story in Hate #30
      or his recent Crossed series.

    I wouldn't say the joker has no reason for what he does his whole reason to commit crime is to push batman ir like in the killing joke james gordon over the brink he wants them to lose control thats why he always says it tanes only one bad day refering of course to the one bad day that he fell i to the chemicals. On the other hand batman and gordon want to prove that the system works that batman doesen't have to kill somebody like the joker thats why the fights between those 2 or sometimes 3 including gordon are truly infinite and will never come to an end.
    But otherwise great video
