the first time i saw this when u showed off ur newest pieces in the vlog, my eyes couldnt focus on anything else anymore. i know i NEEDED to have, make and wear this. thank you so so so much erin for the FREE tutorial video, i'm so eternally grateful and it is the absolute best (polo) shirt crochet i've seen, like ever. ERIN, I'm just 2 minutes into the tutorial but can we talk about the edit and instructions quality !? This is so clear and nice, I can not wait to make my own penny polo !!
loved how clear you were with your instructions!! i was worried i wasn't going to be able to follow along at my level but you explained everything so well. can't wait to make this after my hand heals!
Oh my God, This is the best explanation you ever done. I like how you show from the start the step from measuring on yourself to the end of the work. I wish you had done that to the men polo I had done it but with many doubts until now I haven’t finished 😢. Really wish you continue with this beautiful tutorials. I’m 70 years old and had try to crochet and garments for my family. Wishing you all the best.
Bought this pattern a couple weeks ago and have been slowly working on the back panel! I’ve got such a long torso I feel like this piece is gonna take me a hot minute haha
So happy I found this cause I've been super interested in making a shirt like this and I WILL be making this! It's been added to my project queue! Thank you so much for the free pattern!
Absolutely love the simplicity and versatility. Being able to make a garment to body size instead of predetermined measurements is awesome. I’ve added this to my long list of items I want to make. Thank you so much for sharing your design. Your video quality is excellent too. Cheers from FL😺
Hi, I'm very new to crochet and the yarn I'm getting for this is no 1 weight because no 2 weight doesn't have a good stock but no 1 yarn recommends using 3mm hooks but she recommends 3.5mm hook for this project. Is it okay to use a 3.5mm hook on no 1 weight or will it make the project a disaster?
@@tirthalily Hi. I’ll try and answer your question the best I can. I admire your willingness to dive in and mix things up. The beauty of making an item is you control all the options. You can use any yarn, weight, hook size, etc. Each will produce different results. You can absolutely substitute a #1 weight yarn for a #2 weight, but there will be differences in your finished garment. Using the lighter weight yarn will produce a lighter more open/lacy garment. You can change that by using a smaller hook to make the lacy parts smaller. By using a smaller yarn you might have to make extra rows to equal the width of the stripes the pattern states. Meaning if it calls to make 2 rows of one color you might need to make 3 or 4 rows in order to achieve the same visual results. Does that make sense? Not the most fun part of crocheting, but one of the smartest ways to help make your item turn out its best is to make a swatch. All that means is to work up a small version of the item you want to make in pattern using your intended hook and yarn. Traditionally swatches are made in 4”x 4” size or 10 x 10 centimeters. By working this swatch up you will be able to see several things; how the yarn looks in the pattern, how many stitches/ rows needed; how it drapes, etc. it’s definitely worth the time for your finished item to be successful. Just crochet the number of chains that will equal the 4”(10 cm) and follow the pattern until you make a 4”(4cm)square. You can also make the garment by holding 2 strands of your chosen yarn together - essentially creating the #2 weight yarn. You would use the hook size the designer used. You just have to be mindful that you are being consistent and not losing one of the strands while you crochet. Holding the 2 strands together might create a slightly thicker fabric. It shouldn’t cause any issues, just something to be aware of. I hope I didn’t confuse you too badly. What sounds right in my head may not translate well into words. If I’ve lost you along the way, please let me know, and I’ll try and make things clearer. Enjoy making the polo. Cheers from FL😺
@@ravenlunatic1177 thank you so much for your reply, your explanation is actually the most detailed one I've come across after all the researching I did. I have never crocheted before, I actually don't even know the basics because I don't have a hook to practice with. I'll be getting my first hook with this project and this will also be my first project. Otherwise I know a little bit of knitting, and I made a scarf for my boyfriend last month after learning knitting basics in December. That has been all for my knitting for now. This shirt too is for my boyfriend so I don't want it to turn out in a way where it doesn't look masculine, like if I use a 3.5mm hook with #1 yarn and it gets too lacy then it might be a problem as that could look more feminine or if it gets too thin if I use 3mm hook and again starts looking feminine.. I don't know I'm just nervous and confused since I haven't even touched a crochet hook before and don't have any idea on how crocheted patterns turn out. I'll try looking for #2 yarns but if I still don't find a good stock then I'll just use a 3mm hook on #1 yarn and go with your suggestion of adding extra stitches. I don't want to risk using two yarns together because I'm still not familiar with crochet.
@@tirthalily Glad I could help. Wow, I’m even more impressed you haven’t done any crocheting and want to start with a polo. I understand that the project has got you excited to try your hand at crochet. That’s great! I’m sure others have told you it would be better to start with a smaller project, just to see if you even like crocheting, don’t get too frustrated, end up not finishing it, etc. Yes, they can and in a lot of circumstances, are all true. But that excitement can overcome a lot. I will definitely recommend you swatch it out just to make sure you get the look you are after. I went back and watched her video again. She does use a #2 yarn, but says that it feels more like a #1 weight to her. Looking at the yarn, I have to say I agree with her. So that solves not being able to get the color you want in the #2 yarn. The yarn fiber type is important. The yarn she used is a blend of cotton and acrylic. That gives structure to your piece but allows it to drape (without growing). 100% cotton fiber has a tendency to stretch out (aka grow). That’s the nature of the fiber. It’s also a good idea to think about when you think this garment will be worn most - seasons, air conditioning vs. heating. That will help you decide on the fiber. Cotton is great for wearing in the warm weather months due to its light & airiness. Wool can also be a great fiber to work with as it’s very durable, it keeps you warm in the cold and cooler in the heat. The most important thing to remember when buying wool is to get a 100% super wash merino. The super wash is the important part. You need it to be washable. If it’s just the regular wool roving, if you don’t hand wash the item, you’ll end up having it felt on you. Translation - it will shrink in size from something an adult could wear, down to a child or doll sized item. A mix of fibers is usually a good way to go. Either that or 100% acrylic. Acrylic is usually the least expensive and widely available in sizes & color. It isn’t as drapey as the cotton/acrylic mix and it will tend to be a bit warmer of a garment. I’m not talking about huge degree of temperature comfort, just another thing to consider. That being said, as a beginner you might want to check local thrift shops just to get your hands on a crochet hook and yarn. Something you can learn the basic stitches and play with it to get comfortable with your tension, holding the yarn, which way you prefer to hold the hook, etc. There are a lot of beginner crochet videos out there showing basic stitches you’ll need to know to make this project. I’d check them out first just to get comfortable with the process. I’m sure this designer has videos on her channel showing you basics. I also highly recommend Bagoday crochet channel here on UA-cam. She walks you through everything clearly and has over 1200 videos of anything you can possibly want to make. Check her out. She has a great teaching style. There are others who are also great teachers. Click on a video and see their style. Just because you aren’t connecting with the way someone is showing how to do the stitch, don’t give up on it. Everyone has their own style of teaching. Just click on another’s video and it might just be the one you have the “aha” moment. Don’t forget UA-cam allows you to change the playback speed of a video. You can click on the gear icon either in the top right corner or directly beneath the video depending on where you are watching it. A pop up box will show you many options. That might help to clear a step up for you. If you were able to knit, you should find crochet a bit easier. You are only worried about 1 stitch and not a bunch of stitches on the needle at once. It’s a lot more forgiving. Let me know how the polo turns out. I wish you the best of luck in your crochet journey. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions. I’ll do my best to help. The crocheting community on UA-cam is very supportive. You’ll find many people that want to see you succeed. Cheers from FL😺
I'll be making this for my boyfriend too. Could you give me an idea how much yarn I'll need per colour? I've never crocheted before so I don't have an idea on this. She said that she used 700yds which I'm assuming is per colour but ofcourse my boyfriend will need a lot more since he's tall and has a bigger build so I'm not sure how much yarn to go for

I love this video and this shirt and definitely want to make it. Can you explain the 80+7 thing? thats the only bit I didnt really get. Like why does it have to be multiples of 8 plus 7?
this is amazing, im using it for my duke of Edinburghs skills section! i have had to adapt the pattern slightly because im using four colours and its thick wool, but it is turning out incredibly well

Love the shirt and your teaching methods! I've been crocheting a while but am mostly self taught. Like to find videos like yours that include written instructions as I'm trying to learn to read patterns. Having both is great for that purpose. Have a question, could you attach front panels to back panel then do sleeves? Then the sleeves would only have to be connected on the bottom side. Thx!!💜
Wow!!!! So easy to follow you!!! Thanks . I want like a vest with the polo neck !!! Or maybe just a small sleeve . Mmmm I will see how hehehe 😅 I want to wear it in top of my strapless jumpsuit ! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Hi! Thanks for the tutorial! Can’t wait to try this - do u mind if I ask how many grams of yarn you used for your sizing? Trying to gauge how much I need to buy for my boyfriend when I make this!
Hi, i really wanna make this and i also LOVED the color for this!! I did figure out the one color was Dune in this yarn, but is the other one Grey or light grey?
@@itserinbI’m practicing the pencil grip on simple patterns, but it’s so awkward! I hope it becomes more natural bc 1.) it looks more elegant and 2.) I think it would help my wrist!
Absolutely awesome erin.. i loved the way u explained, i really wanted to make it nd wear it,but i so so worried that i couldn't because im in india, i don't have that currency to buy the yarn, so can u say any other alternative yarn to use, can u say any other way to make this, i really wanted to make itt😫😭
So the size is the size of the chain corresponds to the final width of that piece? It doesn't shrink or expand? Does the type of stitch make a difference in whether it sinks or expand?
this may seem like a silly question but after row 1 should there be in your example 80 double crochet stitches? have been trying to replicate but my pattern isnt lining up after the first 6 rows like yours does. im confusing myself here 🕺🏽🫶🏼
How many grams did you use making this beautiful, amazing top? I wanna make one and I already have 500g of yarn, and I'm wondering if its enough. Thank you so much for this pattern ❤
Hi, can I ask if it’s okay to do the back panel and the sleeves first ? So instead of cutting off my string, i just continued from where i ended my back panel to do my sleeve until the width and length that i want. Would it affect the pattern as it seemed okay to me? Also because I used the same colour throughout so was thinking if its okay to just do it this way instead of starting again from the stitch marker And I was thinking to make a cardigan with this pattern do you think it will be weird with the collar?
I need help! All the good stock of cotton yarns come in no 1 weight and they require 3mm hook. I couldn't find any proper no 2 weight yarn that uses 3.5mm hook. Can I go for no 1 weight and 3mm needles or will it be a disaster? Or will it be okay to use 3.5mm hook on no 1 yarn? I am absolutely new to crochet, I'll start with learning the basics after buying my first hook
I’m fairly new to crochet and this is a thing that got me for a while! The labeled hook size on yarn is just a recommendation. Realistically, you could use a 5mm hook on #1 yarn if you wanted. The size of your hook only affects the gaps between stitches. So for this pattern, they use a #2 yarn with a 3.5mm hook to get the desired look. If you change your hook size you’ll just have bigger or smaller gaps between stitches and need more or less yarn accordingly. Hope this helps!!
@@paigegutjahr2118 yeah someone suggested that I'll have to increase the number of hooks if I'm using a #1 yarn and 3mm hook. I am just worried that if I use a 3.5mm hook on a #1 yarn then it might give a more lacy look which I'm scared will turn out to be more of a feminine look since I'm making this for my boyfriend. I haven't bought the materials yet but I'll be ordering them soon and I still haven't been able to decide if I should do a 3.5mm hook with a #1 yarn or a 3mm hook which is the recommended size for the yarn. I need a solid answer with which I can reassure myself that my project won't turn out badly. I have been leaning towards going with #1 yarn and a 3.5mm hook, how well do you think it'll work out since you said the gaps will be a little bigger? And I'm stuck on #1 yarn because #2 isn't available, even if they are, there are very very limited colour options on those. All in all, they won't work out.

Fantastic video. Gorgeous shirt. Have to have it.😊
Thank you!!
Hi Erin, I can’t wait to make this. Could you please share how much yarn you used to make this?
For my size & measurements I used around 700 yds!
@@itserinbis that 700 yds in total or 700yds of each colour?
This is soo amazing and the pattern is so easy to understand, you've explained it so well, i need to try this❤
Love this and the color scheme 😍
Trying to pick out colors that I’ll actually wear, and the browns go with everything 💖
Hi, i really wanna make this and i also LOVED the color for this!! I did figure out the one color was Dune in this yarn, but is the other one Grey or light grey?
The other color is Sand! 💖
@@itserinb Omg thank you 🥰
thank youuuuuu this is very helpful!
bestie please explain how you hold your hook like that 😂😭😭😭
Hahaha I hold it like I’m writing with a pencil!! More comfortable this way than the knife hold for me, and I don’t get wrist pain! 😂
I hold it the same way for the very same reason haha
@@itserinbI’m practicing the pencil grip on simple patterns, but it’s so awkward! I hope it becomes more natural bc 1.) it looks more elegant and 2.) I think it would help my wrist!
I am still very new to crochet clothing. Am I able to use a 100% cotton that is size three and use a 4.0 mm hook to make this top?
You can! But keep in mind the stitches will be much tighter than mine, and will have less of a lace effect 💖
Thank you for making and sharing this great video 😊
Of course!! 💖
what shades of friends wheel did you use for this? really cute and on trend
Dune and Sand 💖💖
Excited to make this!❤
Can’t wait to see yours! ❤️🔥
Hi! Do you think you could do this with worsted weight (4) yarn and an increased hook size? I don't have enought fingering weight yarns to use
How much yarn was used as in, will i get away with buying onw of thise balls of yarn she mentioned as its a little pricey.
Și eu mulțumesc frumos pentru tutorial! Mă ajută foarte mult!❤
💖💖
Absolutely awesome erin.. i loved the way u explained, i really wanted to make it nd wear it,but i so so worried that i couldn't because im in india, i don't have that currency to buy the yarn, so can u say any other alternative yarn to use, can u say any other way to make this, i really wanted to make itt😫😭
Any type of cotton/acrylic blend would work! 💖
Fantastic tutorial. Thank you x
Aww thank you so much!! ❤️🔥
What brand crochet hook did you use for this polo shirt?
Thank you for the pattern❤ Is it a cotton yarn?
Yes it’s cotton/acrylic 💖
@@itserinb thank you🥰🥰
Appeared simple and easy. Want to make one for myself ❤
Hi ! How many skeins of yarn did you use ??
So the size is the size of the chain corresponds to the final width of that piece? It doesn't shrink or expand? Does the type of stitch make a difference in whether it sinks or expand?
Be sure when ultimated the garment will grow....how much depends by the type of stitches used by the yarn and also by your tension.
Hi! The chain corresponds to the height of the top, not the width!
How would you use 3 colors? I’m a lil nervous about them not flowing like how you explained!
Thank you, this is absolutely gorgeous!!! 😍😍🥰😍
Shell row 11:08
this may seem like a silly question but after row 1 should there be in your example 80 double crochet stitches? have been trying to replicate but my pattern isnt lining up after the first 6 rows like yours does. im confusing myself here 🕺🏽🫶🏼
for example, my starting chain is 128 + 7 (135) and my row 1 end is 133 dc. is that right 😂
Can we make it with weight 3 yarn?
How many grams did you use making this beautiful, amazing top? I wanna make one and I already have 500g of yarn, and I'm wondering if its enough. Thank you so much for this pattern ❤
Très beau, merci beaucoup 😊
💖💖
Can i use nylon and acrylic yarn
Loveeee it amazing, thank you for the tutorial 💕

Of course!!

Hey can you tell how much yarn you used?
This tutorial is amazingggg. Can I just ask how many grams of yarn you used? 😭
Hi!! I’m not sure about grams but the yardage is listed in the beginning and you can convert into grams 💖
Really cute ❤
💖💖💖
Спасибо Вам.
can i use cotton yarn instead of sock yarn? If so what size?
This is cotton yarn! It’s sock weight/sport 💖
How much yarn did you need?
Maravilhosa obrigada por compartilhar Deus te abençoe
How much time it took you to finish this top?😊
Hi, can I ask if it’s okay to do the back panel and the sleeves first ? So instead of cutting off my string, i just continued from where i ended my back panel to do my sleeve until the width and length that i want. Would it affect the pattern as it seemed okay to me? Also because I used the same colour throughout so was thinking if its okay to just do it this way instead of starting again from the stitch marker
And I was thinking to make a cardigan with this pattern do you think it will be weird with the collar?
And can i ask why is my front piece longer than my back? Are there any possible reasons because i used the same yarn and hook
Beautiful
